34. The Truth of the Blur Memories
Nina slowly opens her eyes to see Patricia beside her. Patricia gives her a warm smile and caresses her cheek.
"Are you okay, petal? The way you fell, I was scared to death." Patricia's voice shows genuine concern now.
"I am okay. Where...where is Fabian? Is he okay?" Nina tries to get up Patricia advises her not to.
"They did a surgery on him. Thankfully the bullet wasn't close to his heart but he is still unconscious. He will wake up soon."
"It is all my fault." Nina buries her face in her hands, sobbing. Patricia makes her look into her eye and says,
"None of it was your fault. It was an unfortunate accident."
"Was that night an unfortunate accident too?" Patricia gulps at the mention of the night. The thing she has dreaded for so long has finally happened. Nina remembers!
FLASHBACK
"I think I should go and check up on mom. You stay here and don't move." Young Nina says to young Mara while getting up from the couch. There was a loud thud from her mom's room and she wanted to make sure she was okay. From the time they have been to this country, mom has always been sad and fidgety.
She tiptoes towards the room and opens the door with a creek. It was dark but the fairy lights made it possible for her to see. Well, she could make out the figures. Her mother was standing with a bottle of pills. There was another woman who had covered her face but was wearing pretty black heels. And there was a man. Wait! There is a hooded man!
She couldn't open the door as she was scared. She could see her mom's hands shaking as she was taking pills to eat. But the next scene made her shriek loudly. The man was now pointing a gun at her mom, talking in a deep voice.
"Faster woman. I don't have much time!"
The scene was so traumatizing that she shrieked loudly. Loud enough to gain the attention of all the three people in the room. The assassin rushes to open the door to find young Nina looking at him with wide eyes. Her mom and the other woman in the room too were looking at her with shock.
"Please, Nina go back to your room. Don't come out. Please baby, please!" Juliana pleads Nina but the assassin catches Nina and throws her inside the room, banging the door shut.
"She ain't going anywhere." He points the gun at her.
Patricia comes in between Nina and the gun and glares at him.
"This wasn't the order. You were here to kill her then kill her. Don't make unnecessary hostages." She points at Juliana.
"You aren't the one I take orders from!" and hits Patricia with the base of his gun. She falls down with a small thud.
"Please, please leave my child alone! I am...I am eating those pills....please leave her alone!" she pleads as she gulps the whole bottle.
"You will die. But so will she." He points the gun at Nina, "I can't risk any witnesses."
Patricia, in the meantime, signals Nina to pick up the bat and wait for her count. She tiptoes and catches the assassin from behind. He still had the gun in his hand so Patricia tried to take it from him. This was Nina's cue.
The assassin could see the reflection from the mirror and made a quick turn as soon as Nina raised the bat. It took her by surprise but she hit the gun. Accidentally, the assassin had pulled the trigger and it hit Juliana's head, on its right side. The assassin flees away before Patricia could catch him. Juliana was already in a pool of blood, dead on the floor. But Nina was frozen on her spot. She kept looking at her hands and at her gown on which there were tiny droplets of blood.
Patricia goes to pick her up, running over the blood in the process and closes the door behind her. Nina had already fainted on her shoulder but she had to be quick. She calls an ambulance anonymously for Juliana and takes Nina and Mara to another hospital, saying that she found them outside Juliana's house, out in the rain, soaking wet and crying.
Jerome bought this story after he saw the alleged suicide of Juliana Martin. He knew it wasn't suicide, it must have been Patricia or Carter's plan, but his first priority was his girls. They had arranged for therapy sessions for both Nina and Mara. It was easy for Mara as she did not hear much over the rain but it was very difficult for Nina. She kept on switching from stories to stories and would faint after each session.
She even confessed in one of the sessions. She explained it in such detail that the doctor was worried.
"I am worried that she might be telling the truth." The doctor explains Patricia. She was the only one who suggested therapy sessions so she would accompany the girls.
Patricia gulps at the mention of truth. She couldn't let poor Nina suffer for what the adults did wrong.
"I think it's just the trauma speaking." She tries to keep a straight face but the doctor sees through it.
"I know you want to save her but at this rate; she will remember what she has done. And if the case is dragged to the court, she will tell the whole truth. She has already explained it in detail and she can do it again."
"What do you suggest doctor?" Patricia asks defeated. She wouldn't let this become a court case with her powers but she can't risk Nina telling the truth.
"Hypnotherapy. We can close her memories in the unconscious part of the brain and fill it will new memories. Memories of someone else killing her mother. The memories have to be only slightly different or it can easily mess up her mind." He looks at Patricia's worried face and assures her, "This will not only prevent her from telling the truth but also keep her mental health sane."
"You see, she keeps on changing stories and faints after remembering each. This not only has an adverse effect on her brain but also her body. She can do self-harm in the guilt of killing her mother. Even though we make her understand it was an accident, her teenage brain won't be able to comprehend it. So I suggest you go with this therapy. What memory you want to put instead of it that is your choice."
FLASHBACK ENDS
"But be careful. If she is put into a similar situation again, she will remember those memories", the doctor's words still ring in her ears.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Nina says with tears in her eyes as the memories come back.
"I couldn't Nina, I just couldn't. I couldn't risk your or Mara's lives. I wanted to protect something of Juliana if not her dignity or love for Jerome." Patricia was equally emotional.
"I did confess."
"You did. So we changed your memories to you to think I hit her with the bat. Carter thought he had won and we staged another man as the culprit."
"And you were protecting me all this time. I was the villian of my own story and I kept blaming others. " Nina's eyes look like they are about to burst when Patricia hugs her. She couldn't stop. She couldn't stop crying as she let all her feelings out.
