Chapter 18- Laboratory

Warning
May contain disturbing uneasiness for some people.
Description of dead bodies and torture. (I will give a skip warning in case wish to skip this part.)
"You're supposed to be dead."

Miya didn't even wake up when Chuuya was putting her in the car seat. It made me sort of feel bad that I wouldn't be the one there to greet her when she wakes up, but it was probably the easiest option.

"So, she's been sleeping well?" I asked, mostly to make conversation as I watched Chuuya load her into the backseat of his car.

It felt weird for Chuuya to be picking her up but I not be going with them, but it was something that I happened would change soon with new information.

"Yeah, she's been sleeping alright. It's just getting her to sleep that's difficult," he replied, closing the door after sliding the diaper bag in the floor under her seat.

I nodded, believing it completely. She was use to going to sleep after both of us had given her our attention and love, with one parent missing from that, she's probably not understanding why I'm not there.

"How have you been sleeping?" I slipped my hands into my pants pockets, studying his features.

He blew out a breath, hand sweeping over to move his bangs. "I'm not going to lie. I've been sleeping like shit."

I nodded again, I had figured that would be the case. Chuuya usually has a hard time adjusting to sleeping anywhere away from our bed when he's stressed.

"I don't think I really need to ask you considering your insomnia and ADHD kick your ass at night." He leaned back against the car, eyes focused on me.

I gave a laugh, "Is the chibi worried abou me?"

"Fuck no! Why do you think I didn't ask, bastard?!" His eyes showed the truth, I didn't need the words when I knew how to read his eyes.

"I'm offended! After all the things we've been through and say you don't care?!" I proclaimed dramatically.

He rolled his eyes, a small smile forming on his face. "You're such an idiot." He pushed off the car, standing in front of me. "I got to get going, if Miya wakes up in her car seat–"

"Then you'll have to deal with an upset baby all the way home," I finished, looking down at him.

"Yeah," he whispered before clearing his throat and tilting his hat down to cover his eyes. "I guess I'll see you later, Dazai."

He started to round the car to the driver's side before I said a word. I knew he didn't really want a goodbye like these, he wanted a kiss and a 'see you at home for dinner'. I wanted it too, but this was just how it had to be for the time being.

Just until I can figure out how to keep them safe and unharmed.

I watched Chuuya pull out of the parking spot, giving me one last glance before driving away. I continued to watch him, even minutes after the red vehicle had disappeared from sight.

Eventually, I did turn away, walking back into the building to walk up the stairs. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and pulled up my contacts.

I clicked the one I was looking for, bring it to my ear as I started up the staircase.

"Hey," I said before he could speak, "I have a favor to ask of you."

*****

Getting off the phone with Kunikida, I slipped my coat on, fixing it so it fit properly on my shoulders. It seemed to be the perfect timing because that was when the door of the office was pushed open.

"Hey, guys, sorry I'm late," Atsushi started as he walking into the room, sounding a bit tired.

"Atsushi! Perfect timing!" I cheered as I walked towards him.

He tilted his head and furrowed his eyebrows. "It is?"

I gave him a smirk. "Yep! Now, come along, we have work to do!" I walked past him into the hall.

He followed behind, closing the door. "I have a bad feeling about this."

We traveled to the train station, taking it to the last stop before reaching just outside of the city. We began walking the rest of the way, coming upon a large building.

It was surrounded by a fence to keep people out, however, there were several areas of the fence that had been cut from where trespassers had entered.

Getting closer, more of the building came into view. From where we were approaching, we were able to see a large part of the building was burnt, covered in black soot.

"What happened there?" Atsushi asked from behind me where he had stopped to stare at it.

"A fire that had supposedly started in one of the laboratories two years ago. It wasn't until recently that we discovered the actual cause for it," I explained, stopping to look as well.

"You mean, that guy that's after you, right?"

I nodded. "Yeah. The government wanted to use his experiments so he resorted to destroying them along with with nearly a hundred causalities in the end."

"Wait a minute, was this the place that was shut down a couple years ago after officials discovered illegal human experimenting?" Atsushi looked over at me. "I remember reading something about this place doing experiments on the dead as well."

"That's correct. Two months after the fire, they decided to do a check on the rest of the building to make sure another incident didn't happen again. That's when they found the human test subjects and illegal cadavers."

I started walking again, gesturing for Atsushi to follow. "The building has been shut down for years but that doesn't mean that it was abandoned completely."

"You think that some of the scientists came back to do more work?" Atsushi walked alongside me, eyes still on the building.

I didn't answer him directly, instead choosing a different approach to help teach him.

"You said you've read something about this place, right? What else do you remember reading about it?"

He looked at me, scratching his head as he thought. "I know that a lot of the scientists and their supervisors had been arrested and a lot of the research had been confiscated. Most had been taken to the Special Operations Division since it had to do with ability users."

Special Operations Division, huh?

"I also read that it was possible that some of the research had been taken and sold by the Port Mafia."

"I wouldn't put it past them. Mori runs a business of buying and selling information that would greatly benefit the mafia. If it's no use, he doesn't worry much about it," I explained, noticing a familiar tall, blond man standing next to the fence gate in the distance with another man with short spiked hair. Probably a government official.

"What other things have you heard about in this area? Not about the building itself." I glanced at the boy.

He seemed to think about it before his face lite up, remembering something to help with my question.

"There were missing person cases up until about a year ago in this area after this place was shut down. Most of the bodies were never found but those that were had been cut open or missing parts of their bodies."

"That's also correct. Now, I want you to piece all of that together and tell me what you think. If you can, use clues from the area around us to help."

He thought about it as we got closer to where Kunikida was standing. "While passing the fence there were a lot of places cut so people have been going into this only to come up miss or dead since some of the scientists were still conducting experiments."

I gave a him a grin. "Good job, Atsushi! Very good dedicating!"

He gave him a smile, cheeks becoming a light shade of pink from the praise.

"Dazai, you finally made it," Kunikida said as we stop in front of him. He looked at Atsushi, eyebrows furrowed. "Atsushi, are you feeling better? Kyoka said you were under the weather and were resting."

The boy smiled tiredly. "I'm alright, just tired is all."

"I had him come along to help with the investigation," I added in, my eyes moving to the man in the suit. "I assume you're Special Ops?"

He nodded. "My name is Aoki Taichi, Mr. Sakaguchi sent me upon your request for entree to unlock the gate and to keep watch until you exit."

"Wonderful! I knew Ango was good for something!" I exclaimed as Aoki unlocked the gate and pushed it open.

Kunikida, Atsushi, and I approached the building as Aoki stood by the open gate. The front stepped were covered in moss and leaves, the doors once made of glass were shattered and pieces were all over the floor just inside.

The place was dark and cold, furniture torn apart, walls vandalized with paint, and doors busted in. It was as much a mess as it was on the outside.

"Do you really think there's something here?" Kunikida asked, expression twisting into something of uneasiness.

"I do, but I'm not honestly sure what we're going to find," I replied, continuing farther into the building.

"Do you have any idea what we're supposed to be looking for at least?" Atsushi dug through his messenger bag and pulled out a flashlight, shining it down the hall we were heading down.

"Any sort of documentation that is still legible or anything that seems too out of place," I elucidated, pushing open a door to one of the laboratory rooms.

The room was dark aside from the light coming through the windows. There were tables, positioned in a disarray, some even knocked over. Old testing tubes and beakers were still in cabinets and on counters, different chemicals still in places like they were about to be used.

Aside from graffiti on surface of walls and the collection of dirt and dust,  everything was framed in time, paused and motionless from just after the building was shut down.

All the rooms we checked were the same, eventually becoming more and more like we were travelling back in time to when everything was just abandoned here. Trespassers probably didn't come this far into the building, I couldn't blame them, especially with the feeling of being watched.

"We haven't found anything yet, are you sure we need to keep searching?" Kunikida asked sheepishly, arms crossed and shoulders tense.

"There has to be something here or else Dazai wouldn't have brought us here," Atsushi said as he shined his flashlight onto a few things in the room we had just entered.

"I don't think even he knows what exactly we're looking for," the blonde male grumbled.

"Well, obviously, we're looking for evidence," I replied, throwing him a sassy tone just to piss him off. "Oh, I know! Let's ask the ghosts of the people who died here!" I chirped excitedly.

"Like hell, you bastard!" Kunikida yelled at me. I laughed at his reaction, enjoying the way he gets annoyed with me.

Suddenly, there was a loud crash and Atsushi yelling out.

"Atsushi!" Both Kunikida and I ran to the other side of the room where he had been.

Dust surrounded the area where the wall had been before. The only problem was there was no debris, not like there should have been. There was pieces of stone brick laying on the ground along side where the grey haired boy laid wide eyed and confused.

But what confused me was–

Why was there wallpaper over a stone brick wall that was painted over? The answer was in the room on the other side.

Bending down, Kunikida helped pull Atsushi up into a sitting position. "You alright, kid?"

Atsushi rubbed the back of his head. "Yeah, I had got a little light headed and decided to lean against the wall for a minute, but I sort of fell through it."

"The rest of the building is blocked off from here unless we go up or down stairs, but it's still limited to one side of the building." I stepped through the hole in the wall looking around the room. It was darker in here and much colder.

I bent down and picked up Atsushi's flashlight, using it illuminate the room as I walking farther in.

"Dazai, are you sure you want to go in there? It's probably blocked off for a reason." Kunikida helped Atsushi up, both staring at me as I looked around the room.

"The experiment done on the cadavers were done in here," I started, looking at the ground.

"How do you know?" Atsushi came into the room, following behind me.

"Look at the floor, there are traces of dried blood. If the victims were killed here, they didn't live long once they entered this room." I shined the light over the furniture.

"Do you think any of the blood can be identified?" Kunikida asked, approaching slowly.

"Unfortunately not. With as many people that had probably been killed here, identifying any one person would be impossible with how much different DNA is here."

"Dazai, there's a door over there. Maybe it'll take us to the rest of the blocked off half of the building." Atsushi pointed across the room.

"How did you see that without light?" Kunikida questioned, looking at the boy.

Atsushi smiled, face showing a bit of embarrassment. "I forgot that my ability gives me night vision because of the tiger."

"Then why did you pull out a flashlight?"

"Duh, so we can see, Kunikida," I answered instead. "Last I checked, neither one of us can see in the dark." I headed for the door, turning the handle and pushing it open.

Kunikida gave a sigh. "The two of you can continue without me. Something doesn't feel right about going this way."

We looked back at him and I gave him a teasing smirk. "Afraid we'll find a dead body?"

"To be completely honest, I don't even want to see one." Atsushi turned to me.

"Alright, then how about you two continue searching the rest of the available building and I search the condemned spooky part, yeah?"

"Are you sure you'll be alright, Dazai?" Atsushi asked worriedly.

"Trust me, I've tried killing myself in scarier ways than this place can spook me, not to mention there could be something back here that we can use for our case."

They didn't look convinced, but they didn't argue against me. We agreed that we would meet outside in one hour and to call if there are any problems.

I made my way alone down the dark halls of the condemned part of the building. Things seemed more damaged, the floors creaked and lights hung from the ceiling. The surprising part was they they still flicked with energy, even after the power had been shut off years ago.

Generator, maybe? But why would there be an active generator here if there isn't anybody here?

That's the funny thing about it because there is someone there, they've been following through the walls and under the floors since we entered the building. If I'm quiet, I can hear the sound of their footsteps and breathing, but from what direction?

They sound close, like they could whisper in my ear, yet there was nobody around. There was the eerieness of being alone yet having the feeling of unwelcome company, like someone reading a book over your shoulder.

I continued nonetheless, seeing how far the presence would linger behind me. Some rooms were practically destroyed, doors barely hanging on henges, burnt and broken while others were completely boarded up with no way to enter at all.

**PLEASE SKIP THIS NEXT PART IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO READ DEPICTIONS OF TORTURE OR DESCRIPTION DEAD BODIES!!**

I stopped walking, the smell of blood in the air was strong, too strong for it to be old. I looked at the door on my left, shining the light onto it.

This door wasn't damaged like the other ones, it wasn't burnt or boarded up. It was fully on its henges.

The smell of blood and rotten, the stench foul to my senses. It was a good thing Atsushi had gone with Kunikida because I wouldn't want to wish this upon him.

I took the handle of the door, twisting it before pushing it open. The revolting scent became stronger as the door stopped as far as it could, the scent stronger than even those I had encountered in the mafia.

I lifted the flashlight, letting the beam light the room. My eyes widened as I took in the sight before me, my mind trying to figure out if I should be disgusted, disturbed, or lucky that I hadn't seen anything this extreme in the Port Mafia.

Dead bodies littered the floor, many of them cut open, others missing parts of their bodies. The lot of them were mostly decayed, flys and maggots feasting on rotting flesh.

But what seemed the most disturbing were the bodies hanging by the wires from the ceiling lights. They had also been injured, but my guess was they were still alive when they had been thrown in here.

"Committing suicide after being tested on and thrown in here, knowing you weren't going to escape," I said to no one. "I probably would have done the same thing."

**END OF THE WARNING. UNDESCRIPTIVE SUMMARY IN END NOTES.**

I had murdered a lot of people and tortured many more but to let their bodies rot? Never had I left a corpse where I had killed them, always making sure that the bodies were returned to their bosses as warnings or disposed of before law enforcements could find evidence of my crimes.

I stepped into the room, only to take the door handle and pull the door shut, hiding the bodies way again until I report it to officials.

I moved the light down the hallway, looking to see if there was anything out of the ordinary down there.

There couldn't have been only the one room, right? There had to have been more going down this hallway, there had to have been something else down this hallway.

I decided the only way to know was to figure it out. I started to walk forward again, listening to the creaking of the floor and feeling as it trembled unsteadily under me with each step I took.

It was like walking a tightrope but it was made of thin string, never knowing when or if it was going to snap and send me falling down below. The only difference was that tightropes had a net underneath to protect the acrobats while this place had charred stone and burnt wood.

Nothing seemed odd as I continued, just more broken doors, boarded windows, and hanging lights. There was also something else that–

My phone started to vibrate in my pocket.

"Huh?" I pulled it out, seeing Atsushi's contact name on the screen. I used my thumb and slide the answer button over, placing it to my ear. "Hey, Atsushi, everything alright?"

"Yeah, everything is fine," he replied, the sound of paper moving on the other end. "I think we may have found Ota Shizuko's experiment documents."

"Good. Grab them and put them in your bag so we can examine them back at the Agency," I ordered, feeling some sort of a relief.

"Alright, but, uh, Dazai?"

"Yeah, what's wrong?" The way he had stuttered worried me a bit. This building wasn't the most reassuring place and they most likely had a few spooks while looking, but probably nothing as bad what I've already seen from just one room.

But the energy of the way he stuttered wasn't that he was scared or uneasy, he was unsure, like he words could cause me harm.

And he had every right to feel that way.

"I found documents about both Chuuya and you in them, dating back almost eleven months ago," he explained, more sounds of paper.

Documentation on Chuuya and I? To be honest, it was expected to find something regarding to the two of us since we had become targets by two different people that saw as love interests.

"But I thought that you should know about something else about what we found."

Now, that didn't sound good, just the way his voice lowered made me feel nervous.

"What did you find, Atsushi?" I urged, feeling that importance of this.

He was quiet for a few seconds, like he was contemplating if he should tell me or not. Eventually, he let out a sigh. "The last printed date was in September with a note marking an experiment as a success."

My eyes widened. September? Experiment a success? Those documents were–

"Get those documents and start heading outside. I'll meet you out there." My tone had an edge on it as I issued the order to my pupil before hanging up the phone and turning around to head in the direction I had come.

The sound of footsteps stopped me, my attention in front of me as my mind raced. In the beam of light from the flashlight, I could someone approaching.

The shadow that had been following me finally coming out of hiding? Maybe. Someone trespassing without getting noticed by Aoki? Very likely.

But this was not just some trespasser looking for a scary tour of an old abandoned research lab. This was a man who was labeled dead eight months ago.

"You're supposed to be dead," I finally said as he came to a stop in front of me.

He gave an amused smirk, hands in his pants pockets as he shrugged. "I'm not completely sure either, yet here I am."

"What are you doing here? Are you here to tell me about some angel or something?" I gave a cold tone, eyes narrowed at the brown haired boy.

"Angel? Oh yeah, I remember being told something about that." His eyes scanned the area around us. "No, I came looking for four-eyes. I saw you guys enter the building but I lost track of you all for a while. I have information from the Grimm guys that you may find useful."

My eyes widened, surprised before a smirk slipped onto my face. "Then let's hear it, Rokuzou."

Hello! How is everyone doing?

This chapter did get a little dark but this is BSD, what do you expect?

For those who skipped the part I had put as a skip warning, here is the summary so you have an idea of what happened. (May not be a good one, but is one.)

Summary: Dazai had stopped walking after smelling blood and rot. He had turned to a door that wasn't very damaged.

After opening the door, he found the people who had been experimented on and never found, some of them having committed suicide after being thrown in with no escape.

(And for those of you who love the dialogue and don't want to miss it.)

"Committing suicide after being tested on and thrown in here, knowing you weren't going to escape," I said to no one. "I probably would have done the same thing."

There's the summary.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and didn't get too uncomfortable.

I hope you all have a wonderful morning, noon, and night! Bye!
