Chapter 3: First day

First day of school, a day people usually always dread. Maybe it's because you know nothing about this new environment you're going into. I know this wasn't technically my 'first' day of school, but it still felt like it. I remember nothing from before, not my friends, not my teachers...I don't even remember what school I went to.

Of course it was common for someone to be freaked out on their 'first' day of school. I couldn't even sleep last night because I was thinking about how my school was going to be like. Did I have a popular reputation, was I one of the cool kids, did I get along with everyone, did I have favourite teachers? Questions like those were the type to keep me up all night long.

I was even dressed and ready to go to school an hour before my mom was suppose to wake me up. Let's just say when she opened my bedroom door to wake me up, to see I was already ready, she looked pretty surprised.

I ran downstairs to the kitchen where my mom had prepared breakfast for me to have before heading off to school. My dad was already sitting at the table, newspaper in his hands and everything. He was dressed pretty nicely, I wonder what he does for a living.

I sat down in the chair across from where my father was sitting. I could only see the top of his head though, considering the wide-spread newspaper was taking up half to almost all my view of him. I started eating the breakfast my mom had put out, which looked like the biggest buffet of breakfast I've ever seen...yet again I have only been awake for a couple weeks.

"This is amazing...but you didn't have to make so much food, I think this much food could last for lunch and dinner." I point out, putting a couple of things on my plate before picking it up with chopsticks and starting to eat a mouth full.

"I know, but today is a big day. You're going to school, of course you have to go to school on a full stomach." My mother explains, sitting down beside me, watching me eat. Even though she sat down, she didn't put anything on her own plate to eat, she was just watching me, making sure I was eating.

An awkward silence filled the room while I was eating. The silence was so thick it was like it was suffocating. "So..." I say, pausing for a second so I could continue chewing my food. Once swallowing, I continue "what do you two do for a living?"

My dad finally folded the paper up so I could actually see his face. He looked up at me, taking a sip of coffee from his black mug before explaining "I'm a lawyer."

I then turned my head to my mom, kind of like an implication that it was her turn to tell me what she does. "I'm a doctor, but I took some time off to take care of you. Vacation days if you want to call it that." She says in a smile, rubbing my shoulder. She was always rubbing my shoulder, so much that I thought I would get a burn at one point in that exact spot.

Once I had finished the food on my plate, practically stuffing my face and having my belly so full I felt like it hurt to move, it still seemed like it pleased my mom that I ate so much. "I'm going to head off" I say, standing up from the chair I was sitting down on. I grabbed the backpack off of the floor where I had put it down before I sat down to eat.

As I swung my backpack over one shoulder and started heading towards the front door to put my shoes on, I heard my mother call out to me. "Hoseok, Hoseok wait" she says, quickly following after me.

I looked back at her from over one shoulder, showing her that she had my attention. Once she saw that, she explains "your father is going to drive you to school, wait in the car while he gets his things together, okay?" She asks and I nodded, turning my head back around as I got to the closet near the front door and opened it, trying to find shoes of mine to wear.

I decided to wear black dress shoes which looked to be mine. I don't know what type of shoes I'm suppose to wear to school, but since I'm wearing a uniform does that mean I have to wear dress shoes with it? Oh well, better be safe than sorry. I slipped on my shoes before heading out to the car and sitting in the passengers seat, waiting for my dad to come.

After a while of waiting and me successfully cleaning out all the dirt from underneath my fingernails, my father finally decided to come out, getting into the drivers seat as he put the keys inside the car and started it up.

The car ride to school was awkward, just as silent as breakfast this morning. It was so awkward, I was wondering how far my school was from the house. It felt like I was ageing just trying to get to school.

Soon enough I could see others in uniforms exactly like mine walking in the same direction we were going in, which gave me a hint that we were getting closer. Once my dad stopped the car in front of the school gate to drop me off, he didn't let me out automatically. I tried opening the door to leave, but it was still locked. I looked back at him confused on why he wasn't opening it yet and he looked at me seriously.

"I'm going to pick you up after school, so just wait for me outside of the gate, okay?" He asks and I nodded meaning I would.

"Yeah, no problem dad....um...could I go to school now?" I ask in a light, awkward chuckle.

He didn't say anything but I heard the clicking sound. I turned back around, opening the door to leave the car and once I closed the door, he drove off.

I let out a big breath of air. I can't believe I'm actually here...this is it, this is what I've been waiting for all night long. All my questions will be answered today.

I walked inside the gate, walking closer to the school. I could already see people turning their heads to look at me. I could visibly see people mumbling to their friends as they looked at me. Now that I think about it, this is way more awkward than I had hoped. Everyone probably knows I was in a coma, does that mean everyone knows why? Maybe I can get the answer out of someone.

I walked into the school, heading to the office first, even though I'm a student here, I think they understand under my conditions I don't remember any of my classes or where they're located.

I walked into the office and everyone looked pretty surprised to see me. I know they knew I was coming back, but I guess I shocked them all. It was like they were seeing a ghost standing right in front of them. "J-Jung Hoseok?" The secretary stutters, looking up at me from the desk she was sitting behind.

She had caught my attention once saying my name and I turned my head to her, walking up to the desk she was sitting behind. "Yes, that's me" I say, smiling at her...or at least trying to smile at her. It's always a good thing to leave a good first impression, or...well this wouldn't be her first impression of me, but this would be my first impression of her, and my first impression of her is that she looks shocked.

She put a white paper on top of the desk and slid it over to me. "This is your schedule and where all your classes are located." She explains and I nodded, taking the paper off of the desk with two hands, staring at it.

"Okay, thank you" I say before turning around and leaving the office, trying to find my way to my first period class.

In the middle of me trying to redirect my way around the school, trying to find my first period class, the bell rang for class to start. Oh gosh, I'm going to be late for my first class on my first day of school. This is just a great start.

Once I finally found my way to the class, I knocked on the door. The teacher opened it to see me and was surprised. I'm pretty sure she as well already knew I was coming, but she still looked shocked, just like the secretary in the office.

"Hoseok it's so nice to see you again" she says in a smile. Right when she said my name I could already hear mumbling going on inside the classroom. "Take a seat and we'll start with the lesson." She says, walking back into the classroom and picked up a piece of chalk as she started writing something down on the board.

I nodded and walked inside the classroom, everyone gave me the same look everyone else this day has been giving me. It was so awkward, but I managed to squirm my way through the desks to get to the only empty one which looked like it must have been my desk.

I placed my backpack beside my chair as I opened it and pulled out my notebook and a pencil. The teacher was continuing a lesson from the previous day like everything was normal, which I kind of liked.

Around lunch time this was the time I wanted to know who everyone was and who all my friends are. My mom packed me a lunch, so I didn't have to go to the cafeteria to get anything to eat.

I staid in my desk, hoping my friends would approach me first. I don't think anyone in the class knows that I lost my memory. Even if they did, no one has tried talking to me since the morning so I wouldn't know.

Before I was about to take a bite out of my lunch, someone walked up to my desk. I looked up at him with my mouth wide open, mid-way ready to take a bite out of my lunch. I slowly closed my mouth around the chopsticks, slowly chewing the food as I continued to look at the person standing in front of my desk.

"Hoseok?" The boy says, he sounded hesitant to talk to me.

I finished chewing the food inside my mouth and swallowed, trying to clear my throat before answering "yeah, that's me." It looked like this boy wasn't from my class.

"So...so it is really you, so you're back...and you're okay...I'm so glad..." he says, slowly starting to smile.

I looked up at him surprised...wait a minute, is this the guy my mom was talking about, is this my friend? "Oh, you must be my friend! Sorry I forgot your name, memory loss and all." I say in a smile, standing up and putting out my hand for a shake.

He looked down at my hand questioningly but shook it anyway before pulling up a chair so he could sit in front of my desk to eat lunch with me. "Yeah...it's fine, I know about the memory loss so you don't need to be sorry." He answers, pulling out his own lunch from his backpack.

"If you don't mind me asking, what's your name?" I question, looking at him while taking another bite from my own lunch.

"Taehyung, but everyone calls me Tae." Taehyung explains in a smile.
