Chapter 2: Ruby
I scream and wake up from my nightmare, sitting up. I clutch my racing and pounding heart, breathing hard. "That dream again..." I whisper. I look at my clock, which says it's 2:00 in the morning. I know I should go back to sleep, but I can't do it. I'm scared to.
So, I get out of bed. I walk quietly down the dark hallway, careful not to wake the sleeping children. I headed down the stairs toward the room where Yami's and my Mom's piano was. I sat down at the piano seat. Tears start streaming down my cheeks as I reminisce the nightmare I just had. "I know that nightmare is a somewhat vision of what's to come. How soon...I'm not sure..." I press my fingers on the piano keys, and I play the lullaby that Yami used to sing to me when I was little. Then when I hit the chorus, I change the tune to make it sound a little happier melody. Then the song transforms into slight sadder tone, notes weaving in and out of a darker mix. My tears increasing, as the song getting more intense, memories flooding my head. As I draw the song to a close, one last image floods my head. The Kitsune from my dream.
"That was beautiful, Miss Angela." A little girl voice said, catching me off guard.
I whipped around to the doorway and I saw a 8 year old red-headed girl, in white and blue polka-dotted pajamas, holding a blanket, standing there. I wiped my tears, and smiled small.
"Thank you, Ruby..." I stand up and walk over to the very cushy rocking chair and sat in it. "Come sit with me."
Ruby walked over to me and sat down on my lap, wrapping herself in the blanket she was holding. She laid her head on my chest, curling up. I wrap my arms around her, rocking gently back and forth in the rocking chair. "What's wrong, my little one?" I asked her gently.
"I couldn't sleep...I had a bad dream...So when I heard you playing music...I wanted to be with you..." Ruby quietly answered.
I smiled a little more. I always cherish these moments with the kids. I love them like they're my family. Once my real family was gone, Yugi and these kids are all I have left of my family. I stroke her hair gently. "Well...I was in good need of some company...I couldn't sleep either...I had a nightmare also. I'm glad you came, Ruby..."
"Me too...Miss Angela?"
"Yes, Ruby?"
"Could you tell me a story about Uncle Yami?"
I smiled all the way this time. The kids always loved the stories I told about my brother, Yami. He was the best big brother I ever had. He was there through my everything. He died 3 years ago, I'm still depressed about it. But...being with the children, helps me keep myself from going to full depression mode. Ruby loved these stories the most. She had a big brother, too. His name was Peter. But when Rebecca found them both outside in the streets, Peter had died from the bullet wounds, their father had tried to shoot them with. Peter had protected Ruby, but lost his life in the process. Rebecca took both Peter and Ruby back here. We gave Peter a proper burial in the garden, in the back of the house. Ruby was sad for a long time, but after a while, she warmed up to everyone. She would always stick with me and not play with the other kids. I'm sure it's because she knows that I had a dead big brother, too.
"Of course, Ruby. How about I tell you this one..." I started to tell her the story of how I injured myself on Yami's waterfall while all three of us were playing in the pool. I even told her of the Spirit Realm parts.
"And then what happened?" Ruby asked, once I reached the end of the story.
I poke her nose, making her giggle. "That is a story...for another time." I replied. Ruby then yawned. "I can see you're ready to go back to sleep now?"
Ruby nodded sleepily. "Yes I am... thank you..." She fell asleep in my arms, curled up against me. I smiled as I carried her upstairs to her bedroom, and tucked her into bed. I kissed her forehead. "Good night, little one..." I walked quietly out the room, turning on her nightlight in the process. I closed the door right after.
