an internally torn and conflicted alaska
wonders if she's deserving of the life, and the
girl, placed in front of her.
Willpower runs through her fragile veins like an IV. Pale and sickly, she was. A tormented soul with a rotting disease, numbed by scarce medicines and stories of false hope. The wish of freedom and wildflowers tangled between each strand of her sunlit hair was the very thing that kept her alive. The promise of forever in peaceful bliss was something she valued, something she so desperately longed for.
Alaska Carver. Her first name derived from the place she was born. A place she wishes to visit one day, to learn its landscapes and geographies, to mark down on an old map she finds along the way. And her last name, strange and foreign, derived from a man she's never met. A man with no face and no voice, a mere shadow in the back of her mind.
A hollow gap consumes her being, a deep deprivation of any sort of love from the woman she's supposed to call Mom. An innocent doe trapped beneath her mother's wrathful fire. A byproduct. A consequence to a woman's selfish actions. The word trails off her tongue and leaves an acidic taste. Mom... she repeats. It's a stubborn itch she can't scratch, and soon, a bitter resentment forms.
Yet, Alaska can't bring herself to hate the person that created her. For she'd been taught the true cruelty of the world long before she'd ever been exposed to it. A strange familiarity reflects through the polished metal of her bloodied weapon— the distant look in her eyes, the angled shape of her eyebrows. Alaska never fails to remind herself of her mother. A twisted cycle she simply can't escape.
The darkness that had surrounded her in the past had inevitably toughened her up. Alaska learns that, when a light appears, she must protect it. Even if that means lying. Or putting herself in harm's way. Alaska knows just how far she'd go for the ones she loves. And how much of herself she's willing to lose.
