CHAPTER ELEVEN----▹
NEW AVENGERS FACILITY, UPSTATE NEW YORK
The new facility was quite chaotic, but a good chaotic. People were rushing around getting everything set up, a buzz of activity taking place around them, "Hey," Leigh greeted, entering the room, brown wavy hair cascading around her shoulders, "I just got off the phone with May, she was scolding me." she paused, "She says hello by the way."
Natasha smiled, "Tell, May she should come to visit us." the redhead spoke, "Eh, she busy, like all the time." the brunette shrugged, Natasha's phone buzzed, with a message from Clint, it was a video of baby Nathaniel, "Fat." Natasha spoke, and Leigh whacked her shoulder, "Don't be mean, I think he's cute." Leigh's phone rang, "That's probably Barton, Now. Talk later, Tasha."
"Hello?" Leigh answered, flipping through the pages of the medical textbook, "Leigh." the brunette froze mid-step, "What do you want, father?" she replied dryly, "I just wanted to check in, I saw you on the news."
"Oh." she spoke, "Well that's nice...well I'm alive. You've checked in. Goodbye." she started pulling the phone away from her ear, "Please Leigh," she exhaled sharply, reluctantly holding the phone, "What? Is there something you want to say or..."
"Christine, talked some sense into me, and uh...can you come to lunch today?" he asked, Leigh, sighed, silently debating how to respond, "Nope....but I can do tomorrow," she paused, thinking of a certain witch, "I'm giving a lot of people second chances at the moment...you're way past your second chance, but I'll give you another. This is the last one, though. Don't blow it." she spoke, Stephen breathed a sigh of relief from the other end of the phone, "Goodbye," Leigh said before hanging up.
"You good?" Natasha asked, walking up beside her, Leigh shrugged, "Good as I can be." Natasha smiled lightly, "Me too kid, me too."
"You two wanna keep staring at the wall or do you want to go to work?" Steve asked, "Well Cap, my options are staring at this very fine wall, go to work, or study for my med school exam so..." Leigh spoke, and the redhead next to her rolled her eyes, "I thought you and Tony were still gazing into each other's eyes." she quipped, "Good one Tasha, Good one." Leigh high-fived Natasha.
They walked through the doorway, "Avengers..." Cap began when Leigh cut him off, "Don't you say that. You're going to jinx us." She whisper yelled, "Avengers get together and act like you like each other." she spoke to the group, Rhodey, Sam, Wanda, and Vision. "Very motivational Strange, Thank you for that one. Truly." Natasha spoke sarcastically.
"Alright, Witchy, you're with me." Leigh spoke, walking down the steps to where the other woman stood, "We're going to start your training but," she paused dramatically, "No powers. If you want to be an Avenger, you need to be able to hold your own, even without your powers." Leigh spoke, "Does this mean you forgive me?" Wanda's accented voice spoke, and Leigh studied the woman's face, "I'm didn't say anything about forgetting, but I think it's worth it to give you a second chance..." she paused turning on her heels, taking a deep breath and turning back around.
"Hi, I'm Leigh Strange, and you are?" Wanda's eyebrows furrowed in confusion, "We're starting over," the brunette explained, "Oh...I'm Wanda Maximoff, it is wonderful to meet you, Leigh." she smiled, "I got a smile out of you and everything, look at me go." Leigh cheered sarcastically, and witch rolled her eyes.
"Alright well, first things first is some basic exercise, cause the first step to being a good fighter is building up some strength." Leigh noted, "I was a teenager when Clint recruited me for SHIELD, I knew nothing about fighting or training. Now I've got years of experience to hand down to you...my first suggestion is not training in a corset, you may look hot, but that will get really uncomfortable really fast." the brunette noted, "Meet me back here in ten."
---
The food in front of them steamed as Leigh stared at her father, she picked up her fork twirling the pasta, "You said you wanted to talk," she took a bite, "So talk." she continued to eat as Stephen began talking, "I know things were really hard on you when...when your mother left. And I know that I wasn't exactly there for you."
"That's putting it lightly." she muttered, "And you have every right to say that. If anything I was hard on you...all I ever wanted was for you to succeed in life, but I may have gone about that the wrong way." he spoke, and Leigh scoffed, "Ya think?"
"I'm sorry Leigh," he paused, as she stared at him pausing mid-bite, "I really am." she had been with SHIELD for years, she was trained to recognize when someone was lying...but everything about this almost seemed sincere.
After sitting in silence for a minute or two, she inhaled deeply, "It hurt me when Mom left," she set her fork down, "I knew for months leading up to the day that she didn't show up, that nothing good was ever going to come from the constant screaming matches. But when you dropped everything to come to pick me up from school and told me that everything was going to be alright," she paused, giving herself time to gather her voice, "I thought things were finally looking up, that this was finally the change you needed to actually be my dad."
She took a sip of her water, trying to keep any and all emotion under her control, "Everything changed, yet nothing changed at all. I didn't have a Mom anymore, instead, I had babysitter after babysitter, and you were still gone."
"That day she left, I decided I didn't need a mom, all I needed....all I needed was you." at this point both of them were tearing up, "And you weren't there. Not for a dance recital, a piano recital, not even a parent-teacher conference at school. So 'Sorry' is a start. It really is."
She pushed her barely touched plate away from her slightly, "But if you want to be a part of my life, you're going to have to do better, ok?" he nodded, "I'm going to do better Leigh, I promise." she shrugged, "Your promises have no meaning to me anymore, stop talking about and just start doing it."
She stood up gathering her things, "Also, don't screw things up with Christine." Leigh paused, "She's good for you."
