ii. american woman

Millie had started her Wednesday on schedule like always, but as she got to cleaning and setting both Doris and Shirley in her dry bathtub, Shirley flipped out as soon as she touched the cool ground. While Shirley having a lot of energy wasn't uncommon, she seemed off. Millie didn't want anything to go wrong that day after having a great week behind her.

"Baby girl." Millie held Shirley up to eye level. "I don't understand."

The little rabbit squeaked and squirmed in her hands and Millie cuddled her to her chest, slowly stroking her head as she calmed down. "Oh sweet girl. What am I going to do with you? Do you not like the tub?"

It wasn't uncommon for Millie to baby talk the girls. They were still practically babies and the only company she had anyway so she could get away with it. Unconventional pets her ass.

"Let's try again." Millie set Shirley down next to Doris, who like usual, was unbothered. Shirley this time nuzzled into Doris, resting her head on top of Doris's own. The two sisters sat there in much more content this time around.

"All right." Millie squeezed her hands in silent success. "Now I am going to go put on some Doors, clean your shit, and we're going to have a better day. Got it?"

Both rabbits sat still.

"Good talk."

"Are you two going to get up and come with us or no?"

"No."

James found Millie and their costar Anita, who played Ado Annie alongside them, on the floor of Millie's dressing room. The two usually cooled down together once rid of their costumes, but the two show day on this particular Wednesday had gotten the best of them. Their day would be done after greeting some fans at the stage door.

"I just need a minute." Anita raised her hand giving a thumbs up. Millie sat up and brushed herself off, sliding into slippers and quickly grabbing her jacket and scarf.

"Lets go."

James grabbed Millie's hand and led her through the mad rush of cast and crew, leading them to the stage door to greet fans. Almost immediately, they were hit with a gust of wind. Millie scrambled to put her jacket and scarf on as a couple more cast members joined them outside. Though the temperatures were dropping lower, there were determined people braving the weather to receive an autograph. Her eyes immediately fell to a trio that Millie assumed were college students coming out for the night. A dark haired man, blonde haired woman, and a darker blond haired man, the latter talking the ear off of the former two. He seemed off-put and annoyed, so Millie decided to start somewhere else. She enjoyed seeing the smiles of those who were eager to see the cast and maybe have short chat with them. The hopeful kids, the gleeful elderly folk, and everyone in-between were different. It fascinated her to no end in a good way. She had to work quickly and efficiently so she could make the most out of seeing everyone she could. Even if it meant having a not nice encounter once in awhile.

"Millie!"

She turned her head to the trio of college students she had laid eyes on earlier. The disgruntled one of the bunch rolled his eyes and nearly turned away, almost as if he were embarrassed.

"Would you sign these programs for us, darling?"

Millie nodded politely and smiled at the sweetness of the dark haired man, reaching for the permanent marker and both programs. The couple watched her eagerly as she signed them carefully, the man to their right growing increasingly impatient. Mille looked back up at them, a petty thought coming to mind to get on his nerves a little more.

"And to whom do I have the pleasure of making these out to?" The sweeter side of the persona she put up for stage doors coming out in the sound of her voice.

All three of their eyes widened at the sound of Millie's voice. The woman raised an eyebrow and smiled in surprise. "George and Mary."

The blonder haired man cocked his head as he lit a cigarette. "You're American?"

"Is it too obvious?" Millie shot right back at him, a curious look on her face.

The man lowered his eyebrows at her stoic look. When Millie didn't receive a response from him, she went back to signing George and Mary's program slowly.

"Don't mind Roger, dear. He's not exactly here on his own accord. He's mostly all bark and no bite." George sighed as Roger went to go stand somewhere away from them.

"Clearly." Millie huffed, handing the programs to Mary. "I hope you two enjoyed the show though."

"You were absolutely wonderful, Millie! Thank you for a great show." George exclaimed one more time, before the two of them bid their goodbyes and went on to join Roger, who was now across the street.

Millie scowled at the threesome as they walked away. Sure she had worse encounters, but Roger's attitude left a sour taste in her mouth. She wanted to see more people close to her age at shows, but the stage scene wasn't for everyone. Millie turned tail and headed back inside to grab the rest of her belongings. The bitter cold was cut off once again as the stage door shut behind her. She pursed her lips and raced to her dressing room, slamming the door shut behind her. Millie yanked her scarf off and checked her face in the mirror for any last traces of makeup on her face. With a swipe of her thumb, she cleared the rest of the mascara off of her waterline. However, knock on the door took her away from her absentmindedness.

"Come in."

James swung the door open to reveal himself. "What's going on, Mil?"

"Bad interaction at the door." Millie shook her head and put her scarf back on, searching for her gloves.

"Are you miffed about it or are you genuinely upset?"

Millie shrugged and pulled her gloves on after digging them up. "Miffed like usual. It would have to be extreme for someone to make me upset."

"I know what will make you feel better." James folded his arms against his chest and leaned up against the doorframe. "Rosie made Penne alla Vodka tonight!"

Millie's head snapped towards James. "I'm coming home with you."

James laughed in satisfaction. "She'll be happy about that. Going to have to kick you out at eleven, though."

"As always." Millie and James smiled at each other once more. Millie picked up her purse and skipped over to him. "Lets go buddy. I'm hungry."
