PROLOGUE — DRAWING A BLANK
"And I'll protect you, no matter what, kid." — logan howlett
LOGAN.
His name was Logan.
At least, that was what it said on the tags around his neck anyway. And the man — Logan — couldn't help but feel a sense of certainty that that was in fact his name. Even if he couldn't remember a thing apart from the last few days, he was sure the name around his neck was his.
It had been a rough few days for the man.
First, he had woken up in the middle of ruin with no memory of who he was. There had been a dead woman beside him and when a man ran over, claiming to be someone who he had worked with, Logan had no clue who he was. And that was just the start. Because the following day, after he had walked for miles and found an establishment that took pity on him, he had re-discovered his abilities. In doing so, he almost tore his new room to shreds as the metallic claws shot out from between his fingers. It left Logan utterly shocked and terrified.
He spent the next few days trying to figure out who he was and what to do next. Although no memories were resurfacing, Logan was finding out the quirks of himself; what he liked, what he didn't, his different powers. All the while he was working in the rundown bar that had seen how dire his situation was and offered him a lifeline. Logan would forever be grateful for them.
In his room, Logan sat facing the wall with his head in his hands. He was busy trying to plan what he was going to do next. Although these people had been kind to him in his time of need, Logan knew he could not stay. After all, he had to find out who he was and besides, the longer he stayed the more chance that someone would find out he wasn't like ordinary people. Logan may not have been able to remember what was happening in the world, but he doubted someone like him would have been accepted with welcome arms.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
Logan was suddenly brought from his trance by a faint knocking against his door. A frown crossed his lips as he contemplated who could be on the other side, because he was drawing a blank (just like he was on everything else). But he didn't see the harm in checking. Besides, it wasn't like anyone could hurt him. He had found that one out the hard way.
He got up from his seat and then made his way to the door. But when he peered through the peephole, he couldn't see a thing. Logan sighed in annoyance as part of him believed it was the local troublemakers taking it out on the stranger in town. Yet something inside compelled him to open that door anyway.
And when he did, he found himself staring down at a baby.
Someone had left a baby on his doorstep and then ran. And it hadn't even been his doorstep for long. So, who could have done this? Logan had no idea.
He immediately cast his eyes around outside for any sign of the deliverer or even the Mother. But there was no one to be found. It was just Logan and the sleeping six-month-old. No one else was around.
Logan's gaze gravitated to the peaceful child, strapped tightly in its carrier, covered with a small green blanket. He couldn't just leave this baby out to freeze. So, Logan reached down and looped the diaper bag through his arm and grasped the carrier in his arms and lifted it up to carry inside. He was so careful with his movements as to not wake the baby whilst carrying the child inside and placing them upon his bed.
"Hey, kid." Whispered Logan, although it was mainly to himself. "Why did someone leave you here with me, huh?"
The child did not stir.
Cautious of every move, Logan scanned the baby, the bag and the carrier for any signs of where they came from. And then he found it, hidden under the soft green blanket that covered the child. It was addressed to him. Why on Earth would someone give him a baby? Logan pondered that. Because considering this baby was given specifically to him then the person who left the child would have had to have known where he was. And if they had figured that out, surely they knew about his memory loss too. Memory loss didn't exactly scream 'healthy-child-environment'.
But curiosity took over and Logan opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter and what he could just make out as the child's birth certificate. He decided to open the letter first.
Dear Logan,
I know you don't remember who I am, but I believe you would remember meeting me. I was the first person you talked to when you woke up. I'm sorry I couldn't have been there for you after, but I had a promise to keep. A promise to you, actually. Well, the version you were before you lost your memory.
You asked me, that in the event anything happened to you — which I didn't think would happen considering you're you — that I should find your son and make sure he was alright.
A son? Logan cast his eyes down to the sleeping baby. Was this his son? Honestly, Logan did remember the man who he had first seen after waking up without a single memory. Yet did he trust him to be telling the truth? Logan had no clue. Either way, he now had a baby in his care.
He wasn't an easy kid to find. And those people you left him with were great; it took me ages to convince them I was a friend of yours and that I meant the boy no harm. Eventually, once I had proven myself, they allowed me to bring him to you.
I know you don't remember him, but before you lost your mind I could see how much you cared about your son. And I knew that you would want him in your life again, memories or no memories. I do not know what became of his Mother so he needs you, you're all he has. And I believe that you need him too.
Good luck.
Gambit
What kind of name was Gambit? But Logan quickly dismissed that thought as he returned his attention to the sleeping boy. This was his son. A son he could not remember. Just the thought of not remembering his own child broke Logan's heart. If it wasn't for this Gambit then Logan would have never have known he had a child. So he would forever be grateful that this 'stranger' honoured the promise he had made before Logan forgot him. Because of him, his on would have a Father.
Logan put the letter down on the bed beside the carrier and then reached for the birth certificate. He unfolded it with care and then kept his gaze on the child — his son — as he read the name from page. "Henry Howlett, huh?" Eyes glancing over the baby, he took in his features and tilted his head as he noted the way his son looked. "You do kinda look like a Henry." And what amazed Logan also was the last name written on it. Because although he had tags around his neck, his last name was not printed on them. So that meant he was a Howlett also.
The name beneath Henry's confirmed it. But it wasn't exactly what he expected. Because when Logan looked down at the names of his son's parents, he found himself frowning.
JAMES LOGAN HOWLETT & KAYLA UNDERWOOD
His real name was James? If Logan wasn't confused before, he certainly was now. But as he stared at the name written on the paper, he found himself connecting to it. Somewhere inside, he knew this was his name and he knew that he preferred Logan. So despite it saying his name was James, he knew he would continue to go by Logan from that moment on. Then he looked to the name of his son's mother but Logan couldn't find a speck of feeling or memory to associate with it.
Logan had no idea of what happened when Henry was born. How they wanted to keep their son out of everything they were involved with so Logan had registered himself down as the name he no longer went by; the name no one knew him as. And Kayla, she changed her last name. These small changes meant everything. Because it would keep people from finding Henry, that was unless they were searching specifically for him. But both Kayla and Logan had made sure no one would know about the existence of a child so they wouldn't even be looking in the first place.
Just as Logan placed down the certificate, Henry started to stir within his carrier. Startled, the man jumped a little before he immediately crouched down to look at his son. The baby in question was shifting in his carrier, his eyes flickering open as he started to wake from his sleep. Logan wasn't sure what to do. And if he ever did before, then he had forgotten it with everything else. So all he could do was watch and wait until Henry opened his eyes.
And when Logan did stare into the eyes of his son, any doubt concerning the boy's heritage was forgotten. He just knew in his heart and soul that this boy was his. And when Henry opened his tired eyes to see the face of the Father who had vanished about two weeks prior, the widest grin imaginable spread across his face.
Henry started to raise his hands, reaching up for his beloved Father; his fingers grasping at air as he attempted to clutch onto the man who was just out of reach. Logan just stared at the boy with disbelief. Because in that moment, it finally sunk in that he was indeed a Father and this child was his.
It took him a moment to snap out of his daze and then Logan moved to unbuckle Henry from the carrier.
Logan was afraid to break the boy so he was incredibly gentle with his movements as he undid the buckle and placed his hands beneath his his son so he lift him up into his arms. And when Henry felt the familiar rough hands of his Father so ever gracefully graze his back and head, he started to babble with joy. He finally had his Father back and that was what mattered.
A smile tugged at Logan's lips as he heard the happy bubbles of laughter come from his son. He held the boy gently his arms and looked down at the beaming child with a soft smile. "So, I hear you're my kid. Sorry I can't remember you, I wish I could." Henry just continued to grin as he heard his Father's voice once more. He continued to try and reach up for Logan, his small hands flailing between them. That just made Logan smile more.
Holding Henry in his arms felt so familiar to Logan. Like some instinct deep inside him was telling him how to position his head as well and how to act with a child. He may not have been able to remember Henry; but his body did.
"Everything is gonna be alright though, because we have each other." Logan didn't realise it but there were tears running down from his eyes. "And I'll protect you, no matter what, kid."
Logan Howlett may have been drawing a blank on his life, but that just meant he could start once more with a blank slate. And this time, he wouldn't have to do it alone.
Hello there and welcome to the first part of 'Wild Song'!
I love these two so much and I'm going to enjoy writing them. But poor Logan though. He lost his memory a week prior and now there's a baby on his doorstep. Before the whole event, he knew going in that it wouldn't be easy against his brother so he made Remy promise to look out for his son if something terrible would happen (despite his healing, Logan was worried and wanted to cover his bases). And Remy did just that by bringing Henry to him.
Logan will be an amazing father.
Anyway, thank you for reading!!!
