POSSIBLE SECOND EDITION COVERS

I may need to make a second edition of Ancilla. Why? Because PublishDrive is gagging on the PDF of my updated manuscript, whereas Draft2Digital was perfectly fine with it, and with the cover.

I use PublishDrive mostly for my ebook editions, and for business purposes - that aggregator has a platform that is much more friendly to the business and marketing end of self-publication than Draft2Digital's is. It's also been my experience that PublishDrive has better customer service.

Draft2Digital is good for a few things that PublishDrive is not, though.

Since PublishDrive owns Smashwords, it's the only way I can publish  my ebooks on Smashwords.

Draft2Digital offers authors a free universal book link to help readers purchase the book from their preferred bookseller. IngramSpark offers this, but IngramSpark is a headache and a half, and I don't like working with Ingram. I like making PublishDrive get my book into IngramSpark's system for me. Let them have the migraine. (Ingram is important, though. Ingram is where independent booksellers get their books from. Many libraries also use Ingram, and Ingram is the only book lister that accepts books with adult content. Most library lists won't touch erotics and erotic romance, not even highly literary stuff like what I write).

And most importantly for me, Draft2Digital allows me to buy print-on-demand promo copies for the cost of printing and postage only. The first edition of Ancilla cost me about $4; the illustrated edition will cost me $6. I like to order fifteen or twenty books at a time, then leave them in Little Free Libraries, on restaurant tables with the tip whenever my husband and I go out to eat, and in other strategic locations (I made a deposit in Uranus Fudge Factory a couple of weeks ago...) This is cheap marketing. Advertising costs way more than random book distribution.

Both Draft2Digital and PublishDrive work with Amazon/KDP. Currently, Ancilla is listed on Amazon through PublishDrive. If I want to list the illustrated paperback on Amazon, it's beginning to look like I'll need to do it through Draft2Digital.

I don't want to unpublish the first edition of Ancilla to enable the transfer of listing rights from PublishDrive to Draft2Digital, not when I have promos scheduled for the December holiday season and the February Valentine's Day rush, but Amazon/KDP takes a very dim view of duplicates being put into the system.

The workaround I'm considering? Using a couple more of my pre-purchased ISBNs to publish a second edition - and using only Draft2Digital to do it.

I'll need new covers to distinguish the old edition from the new, so while the Thanksgiving turkey I stuffed roasted in the oven, I made mockups of new covers.

First: the trade paperback.

This is what I wanted to upload to PublishDrive, but PublishDrive can't size it to fit. It's a version of the collaboration I did with lostlovefairy.

This is what I made as an alternative if I have to do a completely new edition. Why, yes, I did base the character images and my authorial stamp on cards from Crowley's Thoth deck.

Here is the ebook cover for the second edition, if one becomes necessary.
