Chapter 1: Road Less Traveled

Death is a funny thing. Most people avoid talking about it or worry about what comes next. Not Amy though, she didn't fear anything, not even death. My name is Mallory Green, and I'm on my way to my grandmother's funeral, it's also the last trip I'll be taking up to the farmhouse. Growing up, I bounced around from place to place, because of my mother's situation. I didn't have a place to call home yet, so I finally had a home when my mom decided to shack up with Matt. The farmhouse was special to me for that reason, my family would always take trips to visit during every school break, I loved it there until a certain someone had to go and break my heart into a million tiny pieces...so yeah, I didn't feel like visiting anymore, not when he was still there. My grandma never hated me for not coming back more often, she's dealt with her own heartbreak and knew how difficult it is to move on from someone.

"Katherine turn that noise down." My mother scolded my little sister for listening to trashy pop music on the way to a funeral.

Katherine just rolled her eyes and turned off the music. "How much longer? I really have to pee."

"I told you that we are not making stops this trip, this isn't a vacation."

"But I can't hold it any longer-"

"We're here." We all looked at my dad when he spoke. He hardly said a word since her death.

Mom started lecturing us when we got out of the car. "Remember to be quiet and respectful. And don't make any....faces when you see Amy."

"Do we have to? You know dead things freak me out." Katherine said.

"Yes, this is your grandmother's wish and we need to show our support for the family." She opened the door to the church. "Come on."

We followed Dad's lead and saw the rest of the family sitting in the pews. "Hey, how are you holding up?" He asked Aunt Elizabeth.

"Doing as well as the rest of the family. Hey, girls you look beautiful." We walked over and greeted her along with our uncles.

Everyone tried their best to hold it together, not wanting to cry in front of each other. The Green family isn't big on showing their emotions.

I saw the pastor walk over to a podium and start the procession. "Welcome everyone. Today we gather here to celebrate the life and death of Amy Green."

We took our seats in the pew, next to some friends of Amy. I turned around when I heard the door creak open. "What is he doing here?" I whispered and Mom told me to shush. He walked in and sat down in the back, keeping to himself.

The pastor continued, "Before we start, I'd like to share a verse from Matthew, come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

The rest of the funeral was...lovely, I guess there is no right way to describe a funeral. Everyone shared a happy memory of Amy, and each of them paid their respects to her. When it was our turn to go up, I couldn't help but shed a few tears. She looked so beautiful in her church pearls and black lace dress. I've never seen someone so at peace before.

"Here." A kind offered me a tissue.

I wiped my eyes, "Thanks." I looked up and here he was, standing right in front of me. "I didn't know if you were going to show up, Finn."

"Yeah, well...she always like a mother to me. She gave a home when no one else would." We stood there in a sort of awkward silence. It's always weird to run into your ex, especially at a funeral.

"Um, my family is hosting a little get-together after...if you want to come?"

"Maybe.... guess I'll see you at the will reading?"

"Yeah, see you later." There he goes, walking away with my heart again.

I jumped back when someone put their hand on my shoulder. "Hey, babe. Sorry for being late." Thomas said and kissed my cheek.

"Thanks for coming, I knew she would have wanted you here."

"Anything for my girl." He said and took my hand in his.

"Hey, Thomas." My parents came over and greeted him.

"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Green. How are you doing?"

"Good, all things considered. I'm glad you showed up for Mallory." My mom said. She always liked Thomas more than Finn, go figure.

Once we said our goodbyes, we left to go to the will reading. I didn't understand why Finn was there, maybe Amy left him something. Uncle Asher held up a piece of paper and read out loud. "The last will and testament of Amy Green." He skimmed a couple of words, skipping over all the business talk. "Okay, the money shall be divided equally between all children. All clothing and jewelry shall be given to Katherine and Mallory, anything they don't want shall be donated. All other personal possessions shall be divided amongst family or donated."

"What about the farm?" Uncle Jackson asked.

"I'm getting to that part. Um...the farm, house, and barn shall go to...this can't be right."

What does it say?"

"Mallory is getting everything."

All eyes were on me. "What? But.... what? That can't be right. Let me see." I took the paper and read, "All properties of land will go to Mallory Green." I was beyond shocked. "But I'm still in college, I can't take care of a farm all by myself. I'm not a responsible adult. Why would she do this?"

I looked at Finn, who was boiling over with rage. He got up and stormed out of the office. Against my better judgment, I decided to follow him. "Finn? Are you okay?"

He scoffed. "That should have been mine. I live on that farm, and she goes and hands it over to...to you."

"I'm not going to kick you out of your home, okay? We'll figure something out. I promise I didn't ask for this-"

"She promised it to me."

"What?"

"She said that when I'm gone...all of this will be yours one day. I should have known better."

"Finn, we can work this out.... what if I give you the deed?"

"Why did she pick you? You practically bailed on her."

No...he did not just say that. "Excuse me!"

"You weren't there Mallory! She got sick and you weren't there!"

"I'm sorry for not visiting more and dropping everything when I heard that she got cancer. But we both the reason why I left."

"That's not a reason to bail on your family." He spoke with venom in his voice.

"I loved her, she was my family, Finn."

"I'm the one who took care of her. It's not right that she gave you everything!" He kicked a trash can down, cursing a loud crash.

Thomas was quick to step outside. "Everything okay out here?"

"We're fine, babe. Just go back inside."

Finn chuckled. "Of course, you ended up with him."

"What does that mean?"

"How long before you go back to New York? How long before you leave, again?

"I'm not...I didn't come here to argue with you. I came here to pay my respects and say goodbye to my grandmother. You're not even her real family." I shouldn't have said that, but Finn has no right to be angry at me.

"Wow, well.... I guess I should leave then. Enjoy your time together, Thomas before she bails on you too." Finn said and walked away.

"What was that about?" Thomas asked.

"It's a long story."
