Chapter 4

Warning: Mega depressing stuff. There's your warning, angry commenters.

"Aikoooo~!" I called out cheerfully, expecting a response just as cheerful. Instead, there was silence. I giggled as I methodically searched the hiding places in her house.

"Aiko, are you trying to pull a prank on meee?" I childishly asked, but I couldn't find her hiding anywhere in the living room or kitchen, the two most likely places to hide for a prank.

"Hm. Strange..." my expression straightened out and I lost the grin, now determined to find where Aiko was hiding. I saw dim lighting from the bathroom door that was slightly ajar so I opened it, the sight making me freeze.

Aiko was in a pool of her own blood in the bathtub, with peppermint scented candles to hide the strong iron odor of her own blood. The lights were off so her facial expression was in shadows but I could see one twisted in pain, yet she didn't seem to take notice as she dug further and further into her own wrist...

"Aiko! What are you doing?!" I exclaimed, taking the knife from her weak hands. I hurriedly looked around and clawed at my pockets before getting my phone and dialing 911 in a panic, not caring that her blood stained my uniform red. I just had to get her help, I had to save her!

I woke up with a gasp, drenched in sweat. I was hyperventilating, and I placed my hand on my chest to calm my rapidly beating heart.

"It's okay, Kokichi..." I whispered to myself, looking down at my attire. The red stains weren't there anymore. I'd made a new uniform after that incident. The old one was burned in a fire so I could forget that awful event, but it seemed to only burn it into my memory where I'd never forget that terrible day. The doctor had told me if I hadn't come, Aiko would've successfully committed suicide.

"Why... am I having a dream about that though...? It happened so long ago..." I thought aloud.

I went to my closet to find my mask. The piece I'd tried to sloppily and temporarily keep there had disappeared into the depths of my messy closet forever, and I knew there was no recovering it from that. I'd need a new mask. I put it on because it was the best I had at that moment, but because of the missing piece all I could see was the edge of my frown instead of the smirking clown face that usually greeted me.

"Is my world caving in on me...? Has the past finally come to rot me away?" I wondered aloud as I took off my mask, setting it on my dresser. Then, something else sitting on it caught my attention. It seemed to shine in the moonlight as if it was calling me, and I understood Aiko completely in this moment. I understood the charm of the blade.

"Have you seen Kokichi today?" I asked Alex.

„Nein," Alex shook his head.

"Great. Either he's planning a prank or skipping again," I sighed, then glanced over to Shuichi. He was already halfway through the assignment while I was barely on number four. Then, I got an idea.

"H-hey Shuichi? Do you think you could help me? I don't get trig at aaaaaalll..." I awkwardly laughed.

Shuichi looked up from his paper, "Um, sure... what do you need help on?"

Alex shot me a glare before shrugging and he faced (Y/N), „Hey (Y/N), ich brauche Hilfe bei der Nummer 6!"

"Yeahhh, nice try," (Y/N) giggled.

„Ich brauche sie wirklich!" Alex showed her his paper and she literally facepalmed.

"Okay, first of all... how do you not remember to divide the logs when it says subtract?" (Y/N) hissed.

I giggled as I eavesdropped, "Somebody's playing really dumb."

"You?" Shuichi challenged with a surge of confidence, and I literally staggered backwards in my seat.

"Wh-what do you mean?" I demanded.

"Shaun... I'm really happy to help you when you need it. But playing dumb just for my attention isn't..." Shuichi sighed, trailing off.

I felt my heart sink but almost immediately my reflex was to get hostile and I growled, "I hope you enjoy seeing my corpse when I jump."

I stood up and walked out of the classroom abruptly. Nobody said anything, nobody asked any questions. Nobody even cared that I just walked out of class without any reason to. I made my way to the rooftop but what I wasn't expecting was to find Kokichi there, looking over the railway to the world below.

"Kokichi? What are you doing here?" I asked. He jumped, then turned around and grinned though his eyes were red and puffy.

"Heya Shauni~! Just skipping class cuz math is sooooo overrated!" Kokichi laughed, but I could tell it was a lie.

"Kokichi... were you gonna jump?" I directly asked, not even bothering to go through the other steps of the conversation first. As the Ultimate Predictor I had to at least once use my ability to predict people useful instead of creepy.

"No! Why would I wanna turn to mush?" Kokichi grinned, and I sighed.

"Go to class. I'm sure there's a girl who'd like to see you alive and well," I tried to smile, but I couldn't bring myself to. I knew (Y/N) was starting to have feelings for Kokichi though I wasn't sure why, personally I found Shuichi to be more attractive {but hey, less competition for me}.

"Are you talking about (Y/N)?" Kokichi asked, and I nodded. He was silent for a few minutes before groaning, "Uuuugh! I guess I can't leave her wallowing in despair because her precious love is gone!! ...Oh, and... if you tell anyone about this I'll shove you off the roof myself~!"

Kokichi skipped away to class, but I grinned. I was alone so I could go through with my plan.

"Please... give me wings."

Shaun was stupid. I didn't go to class, I went somewhere else. I took out my knife and began to slowly cut my wrist the same way Aiko did. I went over the cut again and again to make it deeper, not even bothering to think of the consequences. I wanted to make sense of all these weird things that were starting to happen and the past I'd tried so hard to lock away suddenly confronting me.

Suddenly, an announcement came over the intercom.

"This is a secure and teach. All teachers lock your doors and continue teaching class. This is not a drill. Again, all teachers lock your doors and continue teaching class."

A loud thud was suddenly heard and a loud commotion rang out, some people even screaming. What the hell was going on?! I rolled down my sleeve and put away my knife, leaving the small closet and going out into the hallways. I approached a random kid, "What happened?"

"Some kid jumped off the roof!" they said and disappeared back into the crowd. Did... did Shaun jump...?

I raced outside to find most of my math class already there, everyone crowded around an ambulance truck. I watched briefly as they brought Shaun into it on a hospital bed, and he was covered in blood and unconscious. They quickly closed the doors to the back as they drove away to the hospital, turning on their siren.

Shuichi froze at the sound of the siren, "Th-they only turn on their sirens when time i-is really important in s-saving a life..."

All of us also froze at that statement, and the entire class began to panic. Would Shaun be okay? Why did he do it? Did anyone notice anything? Didn't he say he was bipolar? I looked amongst the crowd for (Y/N), eventually finding her talking to Alex in German.

„Denkst du er wird leben?" (Y/N) whimpered.

„E-er muss...!" Alex wailed in despair.

„Was wenn er n-nicht...?" (Y/N) whispered, and Alex simply shook his head.

"Are you okay, (Y/N)...?" I hesitantly asked, knowing she wasn't after witnessing her classmate almost kill himself.

"You think any of us are okay?" (Y/N) sobbed, holding back tears, "I don't care if I barely knew him... I-I still don't want anyone to do that...! I don't want somebody to die...!"

I didn't say anything and instead hugged (Y/N). She returned it and began to cry. I softly patted her back as she cried, suddenly having the urge to protect her. I didn't know what I was supposed to protect her from, but I hated seeing her like this. I didn't want to see her cry ever again and I promised myself that no matter what I'd make sure that happened.

~~~
"You didn't believe him?!" I gasped.
"H-he threatens suicide to me so m-many times a day! I-if I still took them s-seriously he'd have to have c-constant supervision! I-I'm sorry!!!" Shuichi cried through tears.
"I don't care how many times he's threatened in the past, you should've taken him seriously!! Now look what he's gone and done because of you!!!" I practically screamed, making the detective's tears fall even worse. He didn't say anything else, and instead chose to run off somewhere.
"That asshole... Shaun loved him and he stomped all over his fucking heart like that... he's not my friend anymore," I scoffed. I blamed Shuichi for Shaun's attempted suicide entirely- if he'd just taken Shaun seriously we wouldn't be in this situation! We'd still be having fun and groaning over how math was boring instead of worrying if our classmate would survive!
"Shuichi... I'm going to kill you and all your friends..." I growled. Nobody ever asked for my talent but I knew it would come in handy for the job. I... am the Ultimate Chaotic. It sounds lame, but when I want to I can cause so much chaos people have been driven to murder, suicide, rape, stealing, kidnapping... so many things.
"You do not fuck with Alex..."
~~~

I let (Y/N) reassuringly pat my back, still feeling awful after what Alex said to me.

"He's probably just confused... I am too..." (Y/N) admitted.

I didn't respond, instead trying to reason with myself like I was so good at doing as the Ultimate Detective. All I found was dark thoughts at every turn though, and I knew the task was pointless. I was bound to forever hate and blame myself for Shaun trying to kill himself.

"I-I should've taken him seriously..." I weakly sobbed, feeling the grief pile up like a fresh wound for the hundredth time.

"Hey, cut that out..." (Y/N) warned.

What neither of us saw was the glare that Kokichi was sending our way.

~~~
Those two... what the hell did they think they could do being together like that?! I was supposed to be comforting (Y/N), not have her comfort some emo dumbass! I could feel my blood boiling before Alex came up next to me.
"You wanna destroy Shuichi too?" Alex asked.
"I want him dead," I gritted my teeth.
"Good. Then use that knife in your pocket. He'll be alone tonight, here's his address," Alex handed me a slip of paper and just like that he was gone. I looked at the address curiously.
I could... get rid of Shuichi?
"W-wait a minute... why do I care so much who (Y/N) is talking to?!"
I tore up the slip.
