"Rebecca, can you just not?"
She laughed, her throat burst with the vibration as she turned back to me. Rebecca slowly walked forward, her head lightly tilted. Her dark brown hair lightly blew in the wind, her golden hazel eyes searched my face as her feet stopped right before mine.
"What's wrong? Jealous yet?" She asked.
I furrowed my eyebrows, my hands sliding into the pockets of my jeans. I took in a heavy breath as I met her gaze.
"You do realize that what you're doing does more damage than good...right? Because every time you do this, someone ends up dying." My voice started to shake, the anxiety of pointing out the truth coursed through my words.
Rebecca paused with a smile. She lightly touched my arm, a small spark of electricity made my hair stand up and a small chill run up my spine. She looked over before pulling me aside again as two people walked by.
"When you're like me," another spark flashed across my skin, "you always end up helping. In the end you know someone else will die, but when it's not you, you can keep things going." She softly said. Her hand let go of my arm but the sparks kept slowly pacing on my arm.
"And how do you know that?"
She grinned, turning on her heel as her hands rested on the small of her back in a crossed position, "Because," her hands clasped and let go, a blue light starting to form on her wrists, "no one else can think in a situation like I do."
Jumper, Prologue
The air rushed past my face and ears as I ran, hair flipping over itself as the slope steepened as we descended. A loud laugh came from beside me.
"Oh come on Kendra! Let go and just run!" Her voice echoed down the slope. I followed her, not wanting to fall behind. The limestone crumbled underneath our feet as we suddenly changed to dirt, the leveled out ground meeting the slope as we ran. The sound of stone crumbling followed behind us as I looked over my shoulder.
The monument we came out of began to crumble, screaming coming from the inside and the other side. Screams of getting out and others in panic. My heart beat hard as I looked at Rebecca.
"You're insane, you know that!?" I shouted over the commotion, her starting to get ahead of me.
"Oh come on, we got what we needed and we're out!" She said, her jumping across a bank.
I yelped as my feet slid across the ground. My feet helplessly jumped as I landed on my back in the water. I groaned, my head hitting the opposite side.
Rebecca trotted to a stop, her laughing as she turned around to walk back. "Oh my dear Kendra, you need to stop thinking and just jump."
I groaned at her, trying to sit up. A spark came up my back as I sat up, the pain suddenly ceasing. I stopped, turning to try to look at my back. A hand touched my hand and I screamed, looking back at the source.
Rebecca started to laugh, her pulling on my hand and pulling me up. She looked at me as her hand slid around my back when she pulled me out of the stream. I sighed, looking back at where we came from. The 300-foot building was reduced to rubble as commotion rose in the dust. I bit my lip, moving towards my friend.
"Was that because of us...?" I asked, not taking my eyes off of the scene.
She sighed, "Not just us. Someone was in there that shouldn't have-"
"WE weren't supposed to be there! WE aren't supposed to be exploring. Especially you, Rebecca! Every time you convince me to come, something happens!" My heart rate sped up as I yanked my hand from hers. "This is terrifying to do! I don't like this!"
Her face was calm, almost scary from how calm it was. She slowly moved back a step, her gently sighing.
"Kendra... look, this whole mission with this jumping and adventure is needing someone to be able to actually think. If you watched them, some of these people don't even look, they don't even think of what they should do! We have the advantage to understand how to solve problems."
"How is that possible? Everyone problem solves, everyone knows how to think and stuff!" I frowned at her, "You're crazy." I frowned at her before I started to walk away.
"How did you get out of the dungeon?" Rebecca's question instantly registered an answer.
"We saw the vines hanging on the walls and climbed them to the next story."
"And then?"
"We found the scrolls that had a code written on them."
"And where could you only read them at?"
"At the middle of the royals room?"
I stopped walking, turning to her. She slightly smiled.
"And where in the world did you have the ability to read them?"
I looked at her before I looked back at where the building stood, "The pillars, jumping them as someone tried to stop us from revealing the message." I frowned, "It was a simple code! Anyone who has a brain can figure that!"
She chuckled as she walked over, "And yet they've been doing this 'impossible' mission for six weeks because of the man guarding the message."
I softly bit my lip, looking away as she stood beside me.
"Look... I'm a wanted person. But there are things all across the country that they need people like you. You try to think and then you know immediately. Problem solving is rare. You think without direction and that's how you find direction." Rebecca smiled softly, "I have to leave soon. But.. you can get out of these situations and run towards the truth before anyone else can even blink. That's something you shouldn't hide."
I sighed softly and crossed my arms. She clapped my left shoulder, a spark connecting the interaction.
"And if you're right... what's going to stop me from being a criminal too?" I asked.
"Well, if you keep up your physical pace with your mental pace, you'll get out before anyone else can say different." She said.
I shook my head with a sigh, "I still think you're insane."
She smiled, her teeth flashed in a charm she always had. "Well, everyone would get no where if someone didn't have a small bit of insanity in them-"
The ground rumbled, her and I breaking from our little world. She grabbed her dagger, grabbing my hand.
"Shit." She muttered, starting to pull me back, "You gotta run." She said.
"What? Why?" I looked at her as she started to push me away.
"Just trust me. Run!" She shouted. Her hazel eyes locked with mine, her hair falling behind her shoulders as she held her dagger in an offensive position. My eyes looked to where she was facing away.
People in what looked like wet suits were running our direction. She pushed me forward again, shouting "Run!" even sterner than before.
I looked at her before I bolted, running into the treeline. I glanced back as I got into one of the trees, trying to see back. She stood boldly, watching the people come forward. I bit my lip as I started to move forward, heading through the trees to the next clearing.
