Sentimental Man

(AN: No singing this chapter)

Dimentio and Timpani slowly walked into a small house. Right before entering the door, she turned to him.

Timpani: "Alright! First impression is the only impression! You gotta nail this! You want to seem lovable, and fun! Not weird and depressing, okay!"

Dimentio nodded.

Dimentio: "Okay!"

Timpani: "Good! I like the attitude! Now, remember. You like the ancients. And what do we do when we see someone we like?"

Dimentio took a deep breath, before stepping back.

Dimentio: "We do the 'toss toss'"

He stepped back and jerked his head, making his hair flip over to the side.

Dimentio: "Toss, toss!"

Timpani: ".....VERY GOOD! I'm so proud!"

She placed a hand on his shoulder and let out a sigh.

Timpani: "I think.... I think you're ready."

She took his hand, and together, they walked in.

The architecture was stunning. The stars, the walls, it was all so, unique.

There was a small man standing in the room.

Merlon: "As yes, you must be the student. Remind me of what your name was again?"

Dimentio: "Uh, Greetings. I-I'm Dimentio."

Timpani: "And I'm Timpani! His friend! I'm just here to support....although, if you wanted another apprentice, I have also been taking sorcery, and let me tell you, I've gotten very good at it! I don't have any powers yet.... but our teacher says that my powers will likely evolve into being able to tell things how they are."

Merlon: "Ah, well.....that's.... not quite a power my dear....but never mind that."

 Dimentio: "Whoa....this house is so...."

Merlon nodded.

Merlon: "I know. So, my boy, tell me of yourself. You are human, correct."

Dimentio: "Yes. I'm human. My father was the mayor of my hometown, and my mother was simply his wife."

Merlon inspected his face.

Merlon: "Well, that is quite interesting. With what your school's headmaster has told me about you, you would be the most powerful human I have ever seen."

Dimentio's good eye lit up.

Dimentio: "R-really?"

Merlon: "Ah, yes. I think you could have a real future here with us."

Dimentio: "Sir, you don't know how happy it makes me to hear you say that! I feel like a child on Christmas morning!"

Merlon beamed as Timpani elbowed Dimentio in the stomach for making a similie.

Merlon: "Well, that's something I very much love to do. You see, Dimentio, I am a sentimental man. And I believe everyone deserves the chance to fly. Wouldn't you agree?"

Dimentio excitedly nodded his head, then pointed to the white book sitting there behind Merlon.

Dimentio: "What would that be?"

Merlon: "Ah, good eye my boy. You see, this is the Light Prognosticus. A book created to counteract the Dark Prognosticus, which is currently in the hands of the Tribe of Darkness."

Timpani leaned forward.

Timpani: "The who now? I've never heard of them."

Merlon: "They're just a group of powerful ancients who split from the tribe of ancients. They don't intermingle with anyone else."

Timpani: "Oh. Sounds lonely...."

Merlon: "Yes."

Dimentio looked at the book.

Dimentio: "So....as an Ancient, what do you do?"

Merlon shrugged.

Merlon: "Well, I often aid legendary heroes on their quests. Currently we are awaiting something terrible to happen."

Dimentio gave a confused look.

Dimentio: "You mean, you just wait? But, you have power, correct? Surely you could be helping people."

Merlon: "Oh, of course. I just-"

Dimentio: "And, forgive my interrupting. I was just thinking,  perhaps, instead of waiting for something to go wrong, why not try to prevent it from happening in the first place?"

Timpani shushed Dimentio.

Timpani: "Dimmy, this is an ancient. Be nice."

Merlon held up his hand.

Merlon: "Oh, no, don't worry. It is good to ask these questions. Dimentio, my boy, let me explain something to you."

He leaned forward.

Merlon: "If we fixed every little thing, people would walk all over us. And, if I were to try to prevent a catastrophic even from happening, then no legendary heroes would be needed and the ancients would have role in the hero's story. You see, if we lived in a perfect world, ancients like myself would have no purpose. This is just the way."

Dimentio cocked his head to the side.

Dimentio: "So....you care more about having a purpose than doing what's right?"

Merlon: "Oh, no no no. This is just, the way things are. If we lived in a perfect world, no one would respect magical beings like you and me. We'd all be equal."

Dimentio sat and thought for a moment. He felt something rising from deep within him.

Disappointment.

Dimentio: "I see.....so you guys just wait for these.... heroes of the legend to come along, then offer them the slightest bit of help so you can be seen as 'wise' and 'powerful,' is that not true? Why wouldn't you fix it yourself?"

Timpani shot Dimentio a glare.

Timpani: "Dimentio, no one said that! Quit-"

Dimentio: "May I ask, what do you do about world hunger? If you're so powerful, shouldn't you be able to help feed the hungry with the snap of your fingers?"

Dimentio snapped his fingers, making an apple appear in his hand.

Dimentio: "Or, can you not do that? Never mind world hunger, what about the halfs!? As an ancient, can't you help them?"

Merlon: "The halfs? Dimentio, how do you know what those are?"

Dimentio: "My teacher was one, and his powers were weakened by something! Why aren't you helping them?"

Merlon: "Oh, my boy. You've got it all wrong. You see, we-"

Dimentio: "And you mentioned this Dark Prognosticus. If it is an issue, why don't you just,"

Dimentio snapped his fingers, making the Dark Prognosticus appear next to him.

Dimentio: "Take it and destroy it? That way it'll stay out of the wrong hands! You could actually prevent something bad from happening! But, oh, I forgot. Then we wouldn't need some legendary hero of the prophecy or whatever. You know, someone told me once that nothing was decided entirely by fate! That we determine our own destinies!"

Timpani and Merlon gasped.

Merlon: "My boy, WHAT are you?"

Dimentio snapped his fingers, making the book disappear and go back to where it came from.

Dimentio: "I already told you. I'm human."

Merlon took a deeper look at him.

Merlon: "No. Only members of the Tribe of Darkness can take the Dark Prognosticus like that. You can't simply be human!"

Dimentio shook his head.

Dimentio: "What? That doesn't make sense. Neither of my parents were apart of that. They were both completely normal!"

Merlon: "Never mind, you have more power than I've ever seen, and with such little training.....are you an impure?"

Dimentio: "I-IMPURE?!"

Merlon: "You know, half human, half Ancient or Tribe of Darkness."

Dimentio: "Wait wait wait, are you implying that if someone is born half and half, it makes them impure?! That's horrible. They have no way to control that!"

Merlon: "Now, wait! My boy, you are overreacting. I just need to know, are you impure or not?"

Dimentio: "I'm just human! But why does that even matter??"

Merlon: "Because, impure's have a whole lot of excess power, which is dangerous. They aren't so mentioned in the prophecies much, so we've been keeping track of and trying to maintain them by handicapping their powers in order to prevent them from causing problems."

Dimentio's eyes went wide

Dimentio: "You mean.....wait....YOU guys are limiting their powers?!"

He eyed a drawer behind Merlon, before immediately standing up and opening it. Inside, to his horror, were dozens of those bands. Just like the one he saw around Professor Mago's neck.

Dimentio: "What....what are these?"

Merlon: "Now, my boy, calm down. Allow me to explain-"

Dimentio: "NO! These....these aren't helping. They're limiting! You.... you're not who I thought you were! I thought when I met the ancients, I'd find people who'd accept everyone. Not someone who would label people as 'impure.' I thought....I thought I'd find someone who wanted to better the world. But you just live by the rules of this stupid book. You just sit back and wait for someone else to fix it!"

He turned and walked out.

Merlon: "What are you doing?!"

Dimentio: "I'm gonna do something about the world. I'll use my power to help create happiness. Help make the world a better place."

He slammed the door behind him.

Timpani: "Dimmy! Oh, don't worry, sir. I'll get him to calm down. He didn't mean any of that, I swear!"

She ran out after him.

Merlon waited for the room to be empty before sighing, getting up, and grabbing three bands.

Merlon: "He's got more power in one finger than I do in my whole body... And he can take the Dark Prognosticus with the snap of his fingers......he needs to be contained. I'll go alert the people."
