Chapter 14. Cruz Gets A Shock

Glancing at the time, I see Aubrey will be home soon. I quickly carry the last load of laundry up to our room and see our wedding album and Braylee's baby book on the antique dresser that once belonged to my great grandmother. After neatly placing our clothes in the closet, I make my way back over to the wedding album and baby book. I soon feel a lump in my throat and tears begin to cloud my eyes.

As my fingers flip through the pages of Braylee's baby book, my mind betrays me when it wonders if my unplanned child will be another girl or a boy. Having a girl is wonderful, but if I'm being honest, having a boy to carry on the Garcia name would be fantastic. Aubrey should be the mother, not my one night stupid mistake. I need to figure out a way to convince Kendall to go back to New York. The longer she is here, the more likely Aubrey will learn the truth.

"Maybe I should get in contact with Kendall and explain to her we do not stand a chance of ever being together. I have a family that I love and I will never abandon them. I just pray Aubrey and Kendall never meet, or it will be all over. I will lose my wife and my daughter." I whisper as I place the photo album and baby book in the drawer.

"Daddy, mommy is on your phone. She says she needs to speak with you," Braylee informs me.

"Okay, baby girl, I'm coming. Braylee, did you pick up your crayon mess, like I asked you to do?"

"Well, sort of. I'm still working on it, daddy," she sighs.

"Braylee, you know the rule. If your room is messy, you will not get a cookie after dinner," I remind her.

"Okay, I'll go clean up my crayon mess, daddy."

"Aubrey?"

"Hey, babe. I overheard you and Braylee. She knows what the rule is when it comes to her room being messy. Do not let her sucker you into letting her get away with it, Cruz. Stand firm on this."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. She is now cleaning up her room."

"You are such a wonderful father, Cruz. We really need to continue our talk about adopting a baby. I would love for us to consider adopting a boy," she says. I deeply breath in, remembering I was just thinking it would be nice to have a son.

"Cruz, you still there?"

"Yeah, babe, I'm here. And yes, we will continue our talk on adopting."

"Good. The reason I'm calling is that I invited someone to join us for dinner. She is new in town. I just hired her."

"Oh, okay. Well, that is certainly the hospitality thing for you to do. Shall I order dinner, Aubrey?"

"Yes, that would be great, Cruz. We are in the mood for some Italian."

"Okay, no problem. Dinner will be waiting when you get home with our dinner guest."

"Sounds great. Thank you, Cruz. I love you and I will be home soon. Oh, and you make sure little Ms. Braylee cleans her room."

"You're welcome, and I love you too. Don't worry, I will check her room."

"Okay, babe, see you soon."

After quickly ordering dinner, I make my way downstairs to the kitchen and turn the small television on. Aubrey likes to watch the cooking channel and get new recipes. After setting the table, I make my way towards the fridge to grab some water from the glass jug.

"Damn," I whisper as I hear the female news reporter updating an old case. Nearly five years ago, in the town of Clarksburg, a female patient escaped from the mental hospital and just disappeared. The trail went cold and the cops and FBI could never locate her.

"That's a crappy photo of her. Looks like she has dark hair, but you can't see her face," I whisper as I see the reporter hold up the photo of the escaped patient.

"She is five feet seven inches tall approximately one hundred twenty-five pounds and fair complexion. No known tattoos or scars. Please, if you have any information on this patient's location, call the number that that is on your screen. They consider her extremely dangerous. She has already murdered two people and a possible innocent child. Law enforcement need every bit of help you can provide, the reporter informs us viewers.

"I really hope they catch her before she hurts someone else. That poor man and his wife, and it's still unknown what she did with their eight-year-old child. I would flip if anyone did that to my kid."

"Daddy," I hear Braylee.

"Yes, pumpkin?"

"I'm starving. My belly keeps making a loud noise," she informs me, causing me to chuckle.

"Braylee, trust daddy when I say, you will not starve. We have to wait until mommy and our dinner guest gets here."

"When will that be, daddy?"

"Any minute now," I say and hear the doorbell.

"I sure hope that's mommy and our dinner guest. I'm so hungry," she over dramatizes.

"Braylee, there is no need to be a little drama queen," I reply as I make my way towards the front door.

"It wasn't mommy, but it is our dinner. Can I please start eating now, daddy?"

"Oh, okay, come on. I will let you eat," I say as we enter the kitchen.

"Cruz, we're finally here," I hear Aubrey shouting from the living room."

"Welcome home, babe. We're in the kitchen," I reply.

"Hi baby girl. Mommy missed you so much."

"I don't mean to be rude, but as you both can see, Braylee thinks she will starve to death any minute," I say with my back towards them.

"Braylee, you eat, Daddy needs to turn around and greet our dinner guest," I smile as I turn, my smile quickly fades into a look of fear as I come eye to eye with our dinner guest.

"Oh dear god," I whisper as I feel myself about to faint.

"Cruz, what in the world is wrong, why do you look like you're about to pass out?" Aubrey questions me.

"Hello, Cruz. It's nice to meet you again."
