Chapter 1

The cold hand touched my neck. With a sharp inhale my lungs hurt but I opened my eyes.

The first thing I see is just greyness. Nothing around me is in its place anymore and certainly the people around me. Houses I used to see every day are just ripped from their places and replaced with ruins. There is no more a little pretty town called Reya. The only town not caught with war. The only place where we didn't have to worry about death, and murders, because we were protected, but not anymore.

A strong hand shakes my body lifting me from the ground. Suddenly like I'm awakened I scream, my hands wrapping around the guy's neck. My fingers try to dip into his neck, trying to hurt him. Kill him.

With ease, he removes my hands and pushes me to the ground. He tries to explain something but I don't listen. The only sound I can hear is a constant bomb ticking and my heart. It beats so fast. Every second I feel like I could die, it's just impossible.

"..calm down," his voice finally comes to my mind and I look at him.
"I know nothing! Just kill me!" I scream again trying to get away from his hands. His hands restrain me in second and with no effort he lifts me.
"Doctors are gonna check your condition before we talk again."

My eyes don't see anything from his dark uniform and a sword sign on the left side of his chest. He is not the enemy. This is King's army. They are here to save us. But who are we?

His hand rests on my neck but when I try to move my head and look around it just tights stopping me. With a long exhale I let my head fall on my chest and close my eyes.

We were supposed to celebrate God's answer in the evening. Preparations for the biggest holiday in this season lasted for weeks now. People in my city had a special connection with the God-believing our city was spared from war because of the Monarchs in here. The city hall was supposed to fit all the citizens and more. Some of the Councils were supposed to come.

"Slowly," I hear some voice and my eyes snap open. I see a man dressed in a white coat with glasses on his head and a big blood trace on his shirt.

My unknown saver slowly puts me down on the small bed and takes a few steps back. For the first time since I woke up, I'm able to see him.
He is dressed in a dark Royal uniform with a dark mask over his head and I'm unable to see his face. But when I meet his eyes they are already observing me and ashamedly I look away.

"Look here," the doctor says to me and I move my look from the dirt to him. His blue eyes are calm and I can sense a peaceful aura around him. He is a gifted doctor. Something with calmness, because my head doesn't swirl that fast anymore. I don't feel scared of the attack. I don't feel anything, anymore, and I'm glad for that.
"I will check your vital functions but if you are not injured badly we will transport you to the closest hospital available. And I will make sure your hands don't get infected."
"What?" I ask him lost in the calmness he gave me.
"You hand. It's injured pretty bad." My look falls in my left hand, and I finally realize what is he talking about. This is a begging - is written on my underarm, and I would probably be freaked out if he isn't here. But his power let this goes easy on me.
"Okay," I answer and move my look from him.

I'm back on my soldier and this time I don't feel ashamed. And he realised that because he took off his mask. Now I'm faced with a beautiful dark-haired man with light eyes. His dark skin shines on the weak sun but I have to smile. He is gifted too. The red mark on his left shoulder in the shape of three circles connecting in the middle tells me he is the General.

Generals have power, they are important. They protect Councils.

"Please look at me again." I hear the doctor's voice and I turn to face him.
"Your vital functions are normal for now, but we need to make sure you are okay. Because of the nature of your wound, I'm not allowed to heal you, but I will give you some protection."
I nod at the doctor's words, but they don't mean anything. I don't understand anything from what's he is talking about. My mind is still on the red circles on General's uniform and the fact he is protecting me.

"Why are you here?" I ask looking at the doctor's hand.
"Excuse me. I have to check you." Doctor answers but I nod toward the General.
"Not you. You." I raise my look and say, "General escorting a girl. Wonder why?"

He doesn't answer me. Before I could ask anything his look runs toward the doctor and all questions forming in my head just disappear.
"I'm sorry, I can't allow you any more stress." Doctor answers for him and I nod. It's not important.

"Dove why do you think they are decorating the docks?" My head turns toward Nina and I look at the sun.
"Councils are coming. They will come with King's ship. I heard that people want to leave a good impression." I laugh when I see my little brother falling a few steps from us and I rush to help him.
A kid's cry echoes through the street and I take him in my hands.
"Shah.. baby," I whisper slowly in his ear making him calm down.
"Not little!" He yells at me and I laugh.
"Yes, you are. Yes you are," I run my fingers through his hair and wrinkle my nose.
"Stop it, Dove. I'm not!" He exclaims angrily and demandingly I let him down.
Putting his little feet on the road I smile.
"Be careful little man," before kissing him on the hair. With some giggle, he runs towards the fountain and I exhale.
"You know Nina I think we could go and see the ship. I never saw anything from Royals. And I even heard gossip that soldiers are gonna be there." I wink at my friend before wrapping my arm around her shoulders.
Her laugh echoes in my ear and I look at her.
"You will never change Dovey." Her eyes are laughing just minutes before the attack.

"No!" I yell suddenly remembering everything that happened before the explosion. My brother. Where is he?

Ripping the gauzes and bandages I jump from the bed determined to find him. He is somewhere in here. He was playing with Damian. I saw him getting around the corner, and I saw Damien's brother hugging him.
"I have to find him," I whisper to myself trying to get from the bed. The doctor tries to stop me, but I push his hand and run before he can calm me with his power.

"Shit!" I hear someone cursing but I don't pay attention. I must find Philippe. He is somewhere alone, and he is scared.
"Don't worry baby. I'm coming. Dove is coming," my whispers continue as I run from the tent. I don't hear doctor anymore so that means I will get away from here.

I run again letting my lungs fill with smoke and dust, but not slowing down. Before I can get around the corner someone catches me for my hand I fall down my breath short. I'm not able to inhale and for a second I just look at pieces of blue sky showing through the fog. Right after that, I see my soldier's face and he says something to me. My ears don't catch it but I see the doctors face now and I try to set free. He will make me calm. I have to find my brother.

My hands fight against the soldier's but his grip just gets harder and before I know I don't know why I'm trying to run. My mind is empty from every memory about my panic and run. The soldier's eyes are so close to me but I can't move away. His pupils almost disappear in the greenness and all I can do is look. It almost feels like I can't move anything. I'm not deciding on anything. The doctor's hand wraps around my hand and I feel calmness washing all over me. I shake my head, confused about how I get here.

Everything is slowly now and when I feel my hands are free again I stand up.
"Are you okay?" The soldier is finally speaking. My lips curve into a smile and I answer.
"Yes, but I don't remember what happened? Why am I here?"
I feel his hand on my shoulder and his eyes gazing into mine.
"You tried to run, but you need to go into hospital. We need to make sure your hand is okay."

I look down at my half-wrapped hand and nod.
"Yes. I should go to the hospital." I turn again to the corner but stop for a second.
"Why did I run? It's just blurry?" My forehead narrows and I look at him again.
"I don't know. My mission is to make sure you are safe at Welsh's hospital. Let's go. He takes me by the hand moving in the gate's direction. We are leaving my town.

The first thing I see after the initial blast is hundreds of people whining. People laying on the streets, docks, and all around the Holiday's tables. My heartbeat against my chest. There is no one around and everybody is laying. I hear someone screaming my name before everything turns black and the only thing I can feel is his pain.

General shows me to enter a big black car on the road and I listen. There is nothing I can do about it. I have to make sure I'm okay. To find out who wrote this on my hand. What do they want?

When doors close I'm faced with two more soldiers sitting in the front, one dressed in dark uniform too, but the other is dressed in a light brown uniform.
"Drive to hospital." General orders and I look at them. Like on command they start the car and before I know it we are leaving my town behind.
"Where are we going?" I ask after no one says anything.
"I have to make sure you get to Welsh." The general next to me spoke and I nod.
"Why?"
"The person responsible for what happened in your town is in the escape. I have to make sure you didn't see him somewhere."
"How will you see that?" I ask turning my head to him. He is not looking at me. His eyes look at the front his voice distant when he speaks again.
"With a gift."

We didn't have many gifted people. The doctor was gifted, of course, and besides him Monika, and Gilia as I knew. Monika could move things from the ground, and Gilia could control winds. I remember once when we wanted to play with a kite she allowed us little wind. We didn't have many cold, windy days that summer and when I felt the cold wind against my skin, I remember I hugged her and thanked her. I didn't know why I did that. From that day she didn't talk to me. Maybe I insulted her somehow. But she didn't want to explain it to me.

"Sir, we will be in the Welsh in two hours, Mister Ferduward wanted you to see the new contract about the sales for the weapons. And also to deliver a message from a King. He expected to hear everything about the attack."

The general next to me nods taking a slip pad from the soldier on the right. With a few touches on the glass, I saw him typing something on the white paper before he said.
"General Caius deMorthy with authority number 6 sending a message to King. Please, allow me an audience to a King when I arrive at the castle five days from now."
A mechanical voice answered 'message sent' and he tapped something on the glass again, before giving it back to a soldier.

"Try to get some rest. Welsh can be a pretty fast town, and we may don't get enough time to rest in there."
I nod slowly not saying anything. My look moves to the window and I look at my reflection for the first time since I woke up. My hair is messy from the blast, and I see a little cut above my eyebrow. My lips are cracked and my skin is grey, without any trace of the redness in my cheeks. My wardrobe is covered in dirt and ash, but I don't see that anymore. My eyes see past my reflection to big fields showing around us. They are covered with big yellow flowers all turning in the same direction toward the sun. Sunflowers, beautiful yellow flowers.

"Can we stop for a moment?" I say suddenly still looking at the window. I don't wait for the answer but when the car stops next to the road I jump out of it, running toward the flowers as I have never seen them. Memories blink in my head and I see a little boy smiling while the flower shines in its head. He is unknown to me but my heart beat faster when I met his little eyes. Second, later he is disappearing and my legs fail me. I fall on the grass, General cursing behind me.

Once Dove let her wings on the sky, no one believed it was for protection. She was gifted with something ancient, unseen and rare. It was a gift of destroying. No one saw it that day but the flower in her hand turned into ash, and just like that she wasn't a saviour anymore, but a destroyer.
