8 || The Escape (Part Two)

The last time Piper ran so much was back in the Glen when the Grievers came and attacked them. That was also the last time when adrenaline was pumping through her veins as much as it could. Now, she was running for her life once again and there was no stopping now.

"What happened? Where's Thomas?" she asked Aris.

"He's going to find Teresa, I think," Aris replied. "Piper, did you see them?"

She stopped running for a bit, panting and looking at Aris as him and Winston came to a halt, too. "Our friends and the Grievers, you mean? Yes, I did."

"What if...what if our other friends are gone, too?"

She shook her head in disbelief. "No, Aris, don't even say that. They're still out there and we're going to get out of here and find them."

Still not looking convinced, Aris nodded his head and followed her down the hall, along with Winston. They weren't too sure as to where we were going, but all she could think about was finding Thomas and the rest of his friends.

"Where did they go?" she asked the boys.

"Wherever Teresa is at, I'm sure," Winston replied. "Let's move before we get caught."

"Hold it!" a soldier shouted from behind.

"Too late," she said, turning around at the soldier, shooting at him without hesitation. "Run!"

The boys obliged and took off running, followed by Piper. More soldiers were now piling up behind her as she did my best to catch up with Aris and Winston. She spun back around and went back to shooting at the soldiers. Once she was out of bullets, she threw the gun down and focused on running. When she went to catch up with the boys, they were nowhere to be found.

"Aris? Winston?" she called out, but no answer came. Piper groaned in frustration, wanting to know why they left her all alone. "Damn! Stupid sticks!"

Piper knew that she couldn't just stand around, but she also knew that she couldn't go in any direction to find them. Wherever they were at, she was hoping they left her in order to find a way out. Hopefully, if all of this worked in their favor, then they would all regroup somewhere and then get the hell out of here.

The sound of footsteps were getting closer and closer as Piper was beginning to panic. If these were more soldiers, then she knew that she had to fight them off instead of running again. So, she took a deep breath and began to run toward the footsteps. Before Piper could throw a punch, she was stopped by screams and a gun pointed at her, which made her gasp.

Piper then sighed in relief when she saw who it was. "Thomas?"

"Piper?" he replied, a bit confused, just like the other boys that were with him. "How did you escape?"

"With a lot of skill, that's how," she answered, then looked at the woman from the first night next to Thomas. "Why is she here?"

"We're getting our friend back," he told me. "Come on."

Thomas led them to the Medical Wing, which was where Thomas' friend, Teresa, was at, according to Dr. Crawford. He had the gun pointed at her as she took the teenagers to where we wanted to go. Once we got to the Medical Wing, Dr. Crawford reluctantly opened the door.

"Dr. Crawford, are you here to--" someone from the other side asked.

Thomas then pushed the door open, aiming the gun at the adults, who were putting their hands up, all backed up against the wall. "Where is she? Where is she?!" He looked over at the curtain, then handed his gun to his friend. "Here, Minho." Thomas headed for the curtain and went to the other side of it.

"Get down!" Minho shouted, pointing the gun at the doctors and technicians.

They all obliged, getting on the ground. "Give me your hands!" the blond boy with a British accent commanded, tying their hands up, with the help of me.

"You're never gonna get away with this!" Dr. Crawford shouted.

Piper scoffed. "Don't be so sure of that."

"Guys, they're coming! Where do we go!" the third boy yelled.

"Frypan, move!" the Brit replied, flipping a table full of medicine on its side, slamming it against the door.

"Get back! Get back!" Minho commanded, the gun aimed towards the door as soldiers tried to get inside.

The group all backed up in the corner, right next to a glass window. "We've gotta get out of here!" Piper shouted.

"Everyone, stand back!" Thomas yelled, grabbing a chair and swinging it against the glass, resulting in nothing happening. He yelled in frustration. "Newt, help!" The blond boy grabbed a chair as well and both swung at the same time, the glass shattering to pieces. "Go, go, go!" Thomas shouted at the others.

Piper was the first to jump over, hurrying the others to do the same. Thomas was next and grabbed Teresa, placing her beside him. Newt was next, followed by Frypan, then Minho, who threw the gun back at Thomas.

"Let's go!" Minho screamed.

"Stay behind me!" Thomas ordered as he opened another door, revealing another soldier. In a panic, Thomas fire a shot at him, the soldier falling to the ground, grunting as the electricity cackled around him. "Come on!"

So they all followed Thomas down the hall, running for their lives, hoping that wherever he was taking them had a way out. Fortunately, they managed to get to where they first entered inside the facility, down the narrow hallway with a door at the very end.

"There it is! There it is!" Thomas exclaimed.

The group dashed to the door, where Thomas took out a stolen keycard and began to furiously swipe it, but the door wouldn't open.

"Converge on Level 3. All R16 personnel non-lethal force only."

"It's not working," Piper said in a panicked tone. "Why isn't it working?"

"Come on! Open!" Thomas yelled in irritation, ignoring Piper and swiping the keycard repeatedly and more furiously.

"Thomas!" Janson called out from behind them.

They all turned around to find Janson and a group of soldiers behind him, who were making their way toward them.

Thomas threw the keycard to the floor and got his gun ready to shoot at him. "Open the door, Janson!" he shouted, walking toward him.

"You really don't want me to!" Janson shouted back, putting his hands up.

"Open the damn door!" Thomas repeated.

"Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life!" Janson yelled. "The Maze is one thing, but you kids wouldn't last one day out in the Scorch! If the elements don't kill you, then the Cranks will!" He stopped walking, pausing for a moment. "Thomas, you have to believe me. I only want what's best for you."

Thomas came to a halt as well, still pointing his gun at Janson, not convinced at all. "Yeah, let me guess, WICKED is good?"

Janson put his hands out, let out a sigh, then a smirk. "You're not getting through that door, Thomas."

Then, not even one second later, the door opened, with Aris and Winston on the other side. "Hey, guys," Aris said.

"It's about sticking time you two showed back up," Piper stated, walking beside them, followed by Thomas' friends.

"Thomas! Come on, let's go!" Newt shouted.

Thomas began to shoot numerous times at Janson, but when he ran out of bullets, he tossed the gun to the floor and spun around, running for the door.

"Shut the main vault door! Shut the main vault door!" Janson shouted in his walkie talkie, resulting in the door beginning to close.

"No!" Teresa shouted.

They were all yelling at Thomas, trying to get him to run faster before he was trapped inside. Just before the door closed on him, Thomas slid under, making it just in time.

"Thomas, what's going on?" Teresa asked in a concerned tone, but was ignored like Piper.

In Aris' hand was an object that looked like it came from a Griever. He took it and smashed the slot where the keycard would go, tearing it to pieces. Once Janson reached the door, he and the soldiers were unable to get through.

As Winston and Minho gathered some weapons and supplies, Thomas looked right at Janson and gave him the finger.

"You little shit!" Janson yelled.

"Come on!" Minho shouted, grabbing Thomas as they ran for the exit.

The group stayed together and did their best to avoid any more soldiers that were heading their way. Once they got to the giant doors, Thomas used a latch to unlock the door, opening them up, just like the Doors in the Glen used to do.

"Come on!" he shouted at us as they followed him into the windy night.
