7 || The Escape (Part One)

"Try to keep up with us, please! We don't have a lot of time!" one of Janson's colleagues told us as we were walking towards the Eastern Wing.

My heart was beating faster by the second. I didn't think my name would be on that list. I didn't think I would have to come up with a different plan. If only someone else was called. If only my name wasn't on that list...

We continued walking for a few more minutes. Then we arrived at the Eastern Wing. The guy on the left unlocked the door with his keycard and led us inside. There were doctors already waiting for us when we walked into the room.

"Good evening, everyone," one of them announced to us. "Your new lives begin now."

The doctors gave each of us a new set of clothes for us to change in. Me and the other three girls were led to another room by a guard. Each of us went to an individual dressing room, pulling the curtains behind us. I looked down in my hands to see a white shirt and gray shorts. I took off my shoes and my pants, putting on the shorts. As I was changing shirts, I was now trying to figure out how I was going to get away from these doctors so that I could go find Thomas and Aris.

I needed to get out of here, but how?

I opened the curtain and left my clothes and shoes behind, waiting with the others for someone to come back for us. I looked around the room to see if there was anything I could use as a weapon. Of course, I found nothing.

"Right this way, ladies," the same soldier from before said, leading us out of the room and back into the previous room. The boys were no longer in there. There was a doctor in there and four other nurses standing behind her. The guard shut the door behind us as we all waited for the doctor to talk.

"Welcome back, ladies. In a few minutes each of these nurses will escort you to different rooms for final tests. Your lives have officially changed for the better."

Yeah, right.

A nurse with brown hair and pale skin took me out of the room first and led me down the hallway. She was looking down at a file, her finger sliding across the words.

"Piper, is it?" she questioned.

I didn't answer her. I just kept on walking, not even caring that the nurse was even talking. All I cared about was getting the hell away from her.

She used her keycard to let us in the third room that I had been in already. She motioned me to sit down on the chair in the corner, so I did. Like before, I looked around to see if there was anything that I could use as a weapon. All I saw was my file, bandages, syringe needle...

Syringe needle.

The needle was already filled up with a teal-colored liquid. As the nurse was messing with some machine, I was still thinking to myself. I reached over and grabbed the needle, hiding it by my leg.

"Okay, Piper," she spoke up, walking towards me. "I want you to relax. You won't feel any pain." She sighed. "I would also like you to remember something." She paused for a moment, then smirked at me. "WICKED is good."

That was when I took the needle and stabbed her with it, letting the liquid get inside of her body. The nurse screamed as the needle went through her neck. I kicked her down to the ground and searched for her key card. I snatched it from her and swiped it, making the door open. I ran out of the room and down the hallway.

"Okay, what's next?" I muttered. Then I looked down at my clothes. "Pants and shoes."

I looked around for an empty room that would possibly have clothes. I finally ended up going back to the same room where me and the rest of the girls had to change clothes. I snatched a pair of jeans and took off my shorts, sliding the jeans on. Next, I found a pair of socks and tennis shoes and put those on as well. I was about to walk out of the room when I saw a nurse. I ducked down behind the window and carefully poked my head up. There were nine gurneys rolling down the hallway. I was the only one that knew there was no Safe Haven. Those nine teenagers walked right into their trap.

Once they were no longer in sight, I quickly got out of the room and followed them down the hallway. I wanted to know what was beyond those doors. At this point, it didn't matter if I met up with Aris or Thomas. I just wanted to know what these people were hiding.

I continued walking down the hallway, making sure that no one saw me. I watched as they went inside the same room like last night. I waited a while before going inside. A few minutes later, all the nurses followed each other out of the room and headed in the opposite direction. When their voices died down, I went up to the door, swiped the keycard, and walked inside.

The first thing that I noticed when I went inside was how dark it was. I saw that I was in some kind of tunnel. I looked to my right and gasped at what I was looking at. In giant, cylinder tubes, there was something inside of them that I thought I'd never see again in my entire life.

"Grievers," I said. "Why the hell is this place keeping Grievers?"

After taking a good look at the Grievers, I looked back at the next set of doors ahead of me. I used the keycard once again and slowly walked inside. What I saw was even more shocking than the Grievers. There were people everywhere. They were hanging off the ground, tubes and wires connected all over their bodies. There was also a tube for them to breathe into. I could hear them breathing, even though it seemed like they were dead.

Every single person that was on Janson's list ended up here. My friends were in here as well.

While looking around, I spotted a familiar face. I got closer and gasped, putting my hand over my mouth. "Cora," I whispered. Beside her was Jane, then Shay, then down the rest of the line were all of my other friends. I suddenly felt overwhelmed by what I was seeing. That was when I remembered what the nurse said to me before I attacked her.

"WICKED is good," I repeated. Then, it came to me.

WICKED was behind all of this. This was all WICKED. Janson was working for them. We were never safe from WICKED, because they were the ones that brought us here.

I stormed out of the room and the two doors, ending up in the hallway once again. I wanted to talk to the two boys about all of this, but I had no idea where they were at.

I turned to my left and began walking down the hallway, trying to figure out where I needed to go next. All of a sudden, I heard footsteps approaching. Luckily, I was able to hide behind a wall on my right. My back was against the wall when I heard voices talking.

"I can't believe that same kid tried to get by us tonight," one man said.

"He must really want to see that girl," another man added. "I don't see why he cares so much about her. She'll end up like the others sooner or later."

The first man scoffed in response. "That's if Right Arm attacks us like they attacked a couple of other facilities that we have."

"Where did you hear that bullshit from?"

"Oh, come on, everyone is talking about it. It's no secret that Right Arm is hiding in the mountains, according to Janson himself. They're just waiting for the right moment to attack us here."

The second man chuckled. "Whatever. I doubt Dr. Paige will let that happen."

"You don't know that. She wasn't able to stop the other two attacks. All she does it sit on her ass while she makes Janson and everyone else in this place do all the dirty work for her."

Dr. Paige? She was alive?

"By harvesting all the Immunes, you mean?"

"That's exactly what I mean. She claims that she's one step closer to finding a cure. She better figure out something sooner or later. I bet everyone is tired of waiting for a cure."

After they stopped talking, the two men began to walk closer to where I was at.

Okay, how could I get past those soldiers?

Suddenly, I walked out in front of the soldiers. One of them had blond hair and the other one had a bulky build to him.

"What are you doing out he--"

Out of nowhere, I kicked the blond one in the groin. The bulky one tried to grab me, but I elbowed him in the face. Even though he couldn't see me, he managed to get his hands on my arms and attempted to hold me down. Blondie stood up and pointed his gun at me. I kicked the gun out of his hand, watching it as it flew up in the air. I yanked my arm out of the other guard's grasp and caught the gun in the air before it fell to the ground and shot at Blondie across from me. Next, I swung the gun behind me, hitting the other guard on the side of his head. Then, I made a run for it.

"Get back here!" he shouted, running after me.

It was when I heard him get his gun that I spun around and shot him straight in the chest. I turned back around and kept running.

"Where the hell are those boys at?!" I asked in frustration.

I finally stopped running in the middle of the hallway, trying to catch my breath. I turned around, making sure no one else was behind me. I leaned against the wall and huffed a sigh.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

I furrowed my brows, looking up at the ceiling. "What the--"

"You there! Don't move!" a man shouted at me from behind.

I jumped, turning around, staring at him for a moment as he had his gun pointed at me. I took the gun that I had and pointed it at the man, shooting at him. Then, I made a run for it once again.

Adrenaline was pumping through me by the second. The sound of an alarm flooded through the hallway, followed by flashing, yellow lights in the hallways. I turned my head back around to see that I had barely lost the man that was chasing after me. But when I turned my head back around, I ran into someone. I held my gun up at them.

"Piper, it's Aris!" Aris shouted.

I looked over at the dark-skinned boy that was with him. "Who's this guy?"

"Winston," the boy replied. "I'm friends with Thomas."

I realized that Thomas wasn't here. I turned towards Aris. "Where's Thomas?" I asked, then widened my eyes. "Get down!" I shouted at the two.

They did as they were told, ducking to the ground as I aimed my gun at a guard that was running towards us. After I shot him, the boys stood back up.

"Let's get out of here," Winston said.

With that, the three of us began to run.
