The ring goes south

Pov narrator

The Fellowship departs from Rivendell as the sun's rays pierce the valley. They travel through the woods, over open plains and hillsides. They pause on a hill in the wild. "We must hold this course west of the Misty Mountains for forty days. If our luck holds, the Gap of Rohan will still be open to us. From there, our road turns east to Mordor." Gandalf says.

Sam cooks sausage and other food over a fire, climbing onto a rock beside Frodo. The Fellowship is resting on an outstretched arm of the mountains. Boromir spars with Merry and Pippin, tutoring them on sword fighting. He battles with Pippin. "Two, one, five. Good. Very good." He says to each move of the sword. Aragorn sits nearby with Silveria, smoking a pipe. He speaks encouragement. "Move your feet." He says. Silveria says nothing; only her presence is enough to encourage the young hobbits.

"You look good, Pippin," Merry says as he pairs a blow with Boromir. "Thanks." Pippin smiles back. "Faster!" Boromir encourages. As the Hobbits spar with Boromir, Gimli approaches Gandalf. "If anyone were to ask for my opinion, which I note they're not, I'd say we were taking the long way round. Gandalf, we could pass through the Mines of Moria. My cousin, Balin, would give us a royal welcome." He says, oblivious to what haunts the halls of Moria. Gandalf takes a pipe he was smoking from his mouth. Faint surprise registers in his eyes. "No, Gimli, I would not take the road through Moria unless I had no other choice." He says.

Legolas notices something amiss and looks intently towards the South. Meanwhile, Boromir continues to fight Pippin. "Come on. Good." Boromir says as he accidentally nicks Pippin's hand. "Aaaah!" Pippin exclaims, dropping his sword. "Sorry!" Boromir says, and Pippin kicks him on the shin. Boromir goes down in a mock battle. Boromir and Aragorn, Silveria laugh with the Hobbits. "For the Shire! Hold him! Hold him down! Merry!" Merry yells playfully.

Aragorn walks over to them. "Gentlemen, that's enough." He says and lays a hand on either Hobbit's shoulder. Pippin and Merry grab his legs, pulling him down on his back. Silveria laughs at the sight, moving swiftly over to the heir, and helps him up on his feet. She glances at Legolas, who continues to look to the South, where a strange cloud has appeared. Sam takes notice of Legolas's observation. "What is that?" He asks. Silveria stands up and walks over to him and Frodo, shuffling closer to her. "Nothing, it's just a whiff of cloud," Gimli says disarmingly.

"It's moving fast... against the wind," Boromir says as he gets up from the ground, a hand on either Hobbit's shoulder. "Crebain from Dunland!" Legolas suddenly yells. "Hide!" Aragorn and Silveria call. Aragorn rushes around, getting the Fellowship out of sight. "Frodo! Hurry! Take cover!" Silveria calls from her spot. As The Fellowship scrambles to gather their things, and Sam puts out the fire, the silver dragon lets out her smell, as to scare the Crebains. The rest of the fellowship hide behind rock outcroppings and under bushes. They wait. In a burst of darkness against the light of day, a flock of blackbirds rushes overhead, cawing loudly.

As they get the smell of a dragon, they screech, flying away as fast as they can back to where they came from. The Fellowship comes out from the rocks. "Spies of Saruman! The passage South is being watched." Gandalf spits, hearing his friend growl and her eyes gleaming at the mention of the white wizard. The gray wizard quickly looks at her to see she's ushering Frodo and Sam out of their hiding spot as they hold close to her. "We must take the Pass of Caradhras." He then says and turns, looking up at a great, snowy mountain.

Silveria snorts; her eyes show the discomfort she'll feel.
