Eremika Part 2

First I want to say that I did not ship anyone at the beginning of the Manga/Anime. There was no reason to. No characters showed any romantic interest in each other except for Jean's crush on Mikasa due to her being pretty (which we all know is literally being friendzoned the reasoning). Sorry, best horse.

But as I continued to read the Manga I slowly came to ship Eren and Mikasa as it became clear to me over time that; yes Mikasa loves Eren in a romantic way, Even if we don't know whether or not she has completely realized that herself, yet.

However, I am someone who takes shipping actually quite serious in the sense that I try to interpret and see it in a realistic light as much as possible, and in context to what was actually shown in the Manga.

So do believe me when I say that it hurts me to to tell you:

Eren hasn't shown any romantic feelings towards Mikasa until now.

And it may sound even stranger for me as an EreMika shipper to say this but...

I am actually quite happy about this.

It makes sense.

At this point in the Manga he has not thought about her in a romantic kind of way because he was not able too.

But that does not mean that he never will.

Hence, why in my eyes Eren still goes through the development phase that will (hopefully) end with him actually realizing his feelings (if dormant) or actually developing these feelings for Mikasa in the first place.

Let's just take a short look back at some of Eren's development, and his character over the course of the story:

The 9 year old Eren was the one closest to Mikasa. The sometimes bratty and annoying but still lovable little boy that stood up for his friends and made her smile.  He is the one  who she  cherishes and came to love,he is the one who saved her , he is the one she wants back.

And I don't know if that's possible.

After his mother's death and all the other bad developments in his life the series starts out with a teenage boy with PTSD who is consumed by anger and has already estranged himself from the ones closest to him, namely Mikasa.

Post military training we are greeted with an over confident, self assured teenage boy   that thinks he can take on the world alone. While further emotional detaching himself from Mikasa due to inferioty complex the he has developed towards her. And while he obviously still cares about Mikasa he acts often downright like an complete asshole towards her. It is worth mentioning that this is at least 10 times as bad in the Anime compared to the manga.

This Eren also falsely thinks that:

1) Mikasa's over protectiveness means she thinks he is useless/helpless.

2) Mikasa only follows him since she feels indebted to him.

Fast forward to chapter 50. Eren is confronted with a lot of shocking events all at once; Hannes death, being rescued again, people dying for him, his friends getting hurt, him only being able to watch helplessly and lastly Mikasa thanking him as they are about to die . For being there for her, for rescuing her and showing her how to live.Thanking him for  wrapping the muffler around her neck.

This kickstarted one of the biggest changes in Eren's behavior and how he perceives things,Mikasa especially, since the start of the manga.

And even if the Manga does not dwell on it too often and does not shove it in your face every single minute of the day after this. always present.

He finally came to understand that Mikasa does not think about him as helpless and useless  when she acts overprotective, or frets over him. And that she does not simply follow him because she thinks she needs to but rather that she instead wants to follow  him to the end of the world of her own volition.

That's why If you read the available chapters after that you will notice that he not once reacts with scorn or annoyance when Mikasa tries to help him or  'mothers' him as he called it. He instead he silently accepts it  or  even thanks her for it

Furthermore, he for the first time in years seems to pay more attention to the things he says or that are happening and how they affect Mikasa. As seen when he remembers that Grisha was family for Mikasa too.

It probably also helps that he more or less needed to reconsider his whole life after learning that he ate his father and the story told to him by Shadis.

And yes Eren still has no romantic feelings for Mikasa even at this point.

They more or less only mended their relationship back to what it once was and even that is highly debatable.

Attack on Titan is not a romance manga. The romance plays almost no role in it and that's exacty why I think that Isayama is going where I think he is going with their relationship.

He develops it on the side with small scenes here and there while he concentrates on the actual plot, and he may give it a little, only a little, bit more focus when the story allows for it.

When the characters are not busy with fighting for their survival every day, with changing a whole governmental system and trying to keep the peace between the citizens and other factions while doing it, when they are not searching for the truth in an illusive basement that could change the world as they know it.

Maybe now that they have finished all of this. Now that the truth of the world has come crashing down on them. Now that they probably don't know how to respond to this truth, or can't anyway for what might be weeks, month till the scouting legion is rebuild, the land behind the reclaimed wall restored and the military having made it's decision.

Maybe now the characters are forced to think about something else. To think about themselves, each other, their lifes and what it's actual meaning is in this lie of a world they live in.

We can only wait, see, and hope.
