Busted Toi
The individual clad in the costume wig and novelty sunglasses sat at the laptop, his cheeks in his open hands, elbows resting on the coffee table, eyebrows pointed skyward resembling a pyramid and his bottom lip pushed out.
Minus of motion, he faced the screen brandishing nothing but 'Layla fan', however, this changed. A small window appeared in the centre of the screen, featuring an individual in a blue cartoony duck mask.
This startled the costumed individual at the coffee table.
"Toi Toi Toi" an odd voice sounded from the digital window; it was masculine, perhaps manipulated, but definitely pre-recorded.
In added panic, wig and glasses individual slapped both hands upon the laptops board before his fingers made their way to the touchpad, from there he attempted to close the box.
"Don't bother Toi Toi Toi, I'm going nowhere" the sinister sounding voice said in union to the costumed individuals no avail attempts to end their exchange.
The costumed individual stopped at these words, his face dropped and he slightly backed up, he then proceeded to furiously tapped away in vain at the pad in order to the close the window.
"What did I tell you Toi Toi Toi, there's no getting rid of me" the voice stated.
"How do you know me?" Toi Toi Toi asked in an accented voice unlike his previous.
"I know you well Toi Toi Toi, who's commonly known as Toi, who lives in the slums nearby with his mother, father and three younger sisters..."
Toi looked shocked through his disguise, he gulped loudly, opened his mouth and moved his lips as if speaking, however no words came out.
"I'm sure you would like to know who we are" the voice enquired.
"Please, don't hurt my family" Toi managed to pleaded.
On this occasion, a recording device was visible towards the bottom of the screen as the duck masked individual worked the buttons of in order to play a message.
"Worry not, we do no physical harm"
"What is it you want?!" Toi demanded to know with a new found drive.
Then...
A phone rang...
Along with a second phone...
Then a third...
Followed by a forth...
Toi jumped as his focus moved towards the phones, they made a disharmonious wracked as they buzzed along the table in the spot o the table.
"Ignoring the phone is rude Toi, many would like to speak with you, you're not use to receiving call, are you Toi" the voice over the computer claimed.
"Who, are, they?" Toi asked as he continued to face the ringing phones.
A quiet noise emoted from the window, this instantly gained Toi's reluctant attention...
It was the box he had placed on the window earlier, it was moving slightly.
That phone was ringing...
"We have removed your ability to keep your number private; we do hope you are able to maintain your brilliant customer service skills at busy times, as we are sure many would like to speak with you" the voice said.
"No, I do not, this not my..." Toi stuttered before the masked individual boldly presented a Dictaphone which relayed a continuation message.
"If you would rather however, our legion would be more than happy to assist you with your administration in person upon their arrival, they should be with you in the next three minutes"
Toi looked at screen with fresh horror, his jaw clearly tensed before he stretched his legs and in effect, pushed himself further back from his sitting position, he placed his clenched palms on the floor.
"Thank you for your co-operation Toi, our legion has entered the building"
Toi instantly sprang to his feet, charged and body slammed a glass balcony door which he scrambled to open, upon opening it, he hurdled across the rail in order to flee the premises.
Toi panted heavily as he turned a corner off a side-street then harshly threw his back to a grimy alleyway wall.
Short or breath and far from composed, he managed to slow his breathing and relax his above and below his glasses - the visible areas of his face, before he awkwardly placed his palm between the glasses and wig, wiped a shiny layer of sweet from his forehead and swatted away the visible content.
He rummaged through his combat pockets until he produced a worn sliver flip phone. He pealed back the pink heart spectacles that masked his dark and distressed eyes with his free hand, leaving them resting in a slant across the crocked straw like wig.
He punched a number into the keypad before placing the phone to his ear.
The phone rang...
"Hell..o" a wary voice enquired.
"It's Toi Toi boss" the individual said in a rushed manner.
"What?!" the boss barked abruptly.
"Toi, from your, six, office, I believe..." Toi managed as he thought.
"Oh you, what is it boy?" his boss demanded to know.
"We, got, busted" Toi hesitantly drew out as he winced.
"Oh what now?" the boss asked in a so-so manner "And hurry it up! My little girl's on hold".
"I was working on..." Toi stopped and looked around at the alleyway; others were there, though Toi clearly didn't mind them as he continued hastily continued "I was working the 'Layla Fan', then a, err, web talk box appear, I could not close it, a, person in a ducky mask spoke to me, he describe me well, and.. chase...."
"Kid, calm down you're not making sense" the boss interrupted
Toi pulled off his wig and glasses and dropped them to his side as he slid down the wall, sitting with his legs spread as he attempted to relax.
"He, I think he? Talk about my disguise..." Toi managed before being interrupted again.
"Well you shouldn't have got caught should you" the boss mocked.
"I have band aid over camera lenses, I, wear disguise at work alone, but he say exactly how I look and what I do, then..." Toi rushed in a broken panic before his boss cut in.
"They know what you do!?" the boss snapped.
"They know the, radio, phone, software on phone to download, they know insurance and sales, and..." Toi recited.
"So someone's spying on my business then?" the boss stated in a fed up sounding manner before sighing "OK kid, don't worry, I'll make a few adjustments, just, get back to work and I'll crack on online..."
"They, people there boss" Toi yelled as he looked towards the corner wall with wide eyes.
"What are you on about now?" the boss asked.
"They say, they in the building, I run" Toi whispered.
"What, so they found you?" the boss asked.
"They find me, they know me, they say my, they know family" Toi said in a wavering voice.
"Kid, get over it! You answer phones, put on an accent and read a script, it's a job! Authorities couldn't even pin hacking charges on you because not only are my servers protected, buy you failed at hacking, so don't worry" the boss said.
"But, they call all phones and use web camera" Toi added.
"Kid, you know what, phones have always been a necessary evil to me, never my strong point, but you know what's great about them? They're easy to get hold of and even easier to lose, so just throw this phone away, take the day off and we'll make plans another day" the boss advised.
"This, boss, this is my phone, my mama get for me" he said.
"Phones come and go as I said, you don't wanna get traced again do you?" the boss asked.
"No" Toi said sadly.
"So lash it and get a new one, I don't pay you that little" the boss suggested with an injected laugh.
"But, work, how do we, speak?" Toi asked.
"How did we get in touch in the first place? The likes of you are everywhere you only need to make an effort" the boss stated in an impatient manner.
Toi frowned and slightly snarled, but said nothing in return, the boss soon spoke again.
"You know what boy, I'd be upset if I weren't in such a good mood, and you're performance is OK, so, I'm willing to let this mess up go"
"So, what do..." Toi began to ask
"Bye kid" the boss said as he hung up.
Toi's face softened as he listened to the hum of the cut off tone.
Closing his phone, he slowly rose, he looked around him; gaze skimming past the oblivious few going about their business clearing and preparing.
He strolled out the alleyway with a face depicting a daze, he then proceeded to move down a busy high street loaded with street markets.
Then...
The phone rang...
Toi almost dropped the phone in a startled jolt. He captured it in time and held it in a grasp which resulted in his veins showing at the back of his hands as he held the blank silver phone face to his own. He watched and listened for a few seconds before he moved his second hand forward, hesitantly pinched the corners of the face and slowly pulled open the flap.
He bought the phone to his ear before he had completely finished opening it.
"Toi" a ladies voice said.
"Mama" he answered with a flush of relief.
