Chapter 2

Iris and Kari were sweating like crazy in the smoldering heat. Their water supply had run dry and they were now forced to drink their own sweat! All they saw was sun kissed sand and sometimes a tumble weed passing by. After a few more minutes Kari collapsed gasping from exhaustion. Iris stopped and laid down next to the poor youngster and trying to comfort her.

“It’s ok Kari… its ok we’ll be fine… the town is just a few more miles. Please get up. We can do this.” Iris said in her dry, raspy voice. Kari looked to respond, her mouth moved and sound followed a few seconds later

“Can we please, stop for the time being? I’m… really tired… can we travel at night when it’s cooler?” Kari’s voice was so low and worn out that Iris barely heard the child, but non-the-less she nodded and dug a wide hole that provided shade for both of them until night came along with the cool breeze

~later that night~

It was now night, the stars light up the night sky and lead the girls to their destination with their light. Every once and a while they would stop and look at the beautiful sky and just gaze at the stars for a moment then be on their way

“How much longer Iris, I really want find a home!” Kari wasn’t tired just really eager to get in to town and meet everyone. Iris pointed to a small light in the distance

“You see that Kari?! Not much farther, come on! Kick it in to high gear!” the two youngsters ran as fast as they could toward the light, and as they got closer it took a form of a town bustling with people, big hard-mud houses, lots of lit torches and  lots of water. It looked like a huge Egyptian farmers market, minus the farm.  They paused just inches away from entering then looked at each other.

“Iris, this place is so big!” Kari looked at everything then started to run in. only to be held back by Iris who glared at her

“Stay close! I don’t you getting lost in such a big place!” Iris looked down at Kari and smiled as Kari nodded in agreement

“Yes, Iris.” Kari held Iris’s hand and didn’t let go until it was ok. Soon after they entered they heard a very familiar voice call out

“KARI?!! IRIS?!! Oh my Ra is that really you?!” I tan boy with tri-colored hair ran up to them. The two turned around and gasped.

“HEBA!!! “ Kari yelled and lunged at her friend. You see Heba, Iris and Kari go WAY back. Before they left their small village town Kari and Iris were good friends with Heba and now to see him again is truly a gift given by Ra!

“Good to see you again Heba! How have you been?” Iris came up and ruffled the boy’s hair

“Good, Good I got a job and it is a very nice one at that!” Heba smiled when he saw Kari’s and Iris’s shocked faces

“No way, you got a job! Where is it?!” Kari pestered him for an answer. ”what do you do?! Is it fun?! How much do you get on a daily basis?!” Kari hovered like always when she wanted to know something

“I work at the palace as a guard. It pays well. I guess it’s fun.” Heba answered all of Kari’s questions quickly so she would give him some room

“You work at the palace?!” Iris was shocked out of her mind… granted when they were young he said that someday he would, but Iris didn’t take him seriously back then… but just look at him now!

Heba hummed then had a ‘light bulb’ moment

“Hey, if the pharaoh is ok with it maybe you could come to the place!” Kari and Iris went wide eyed and stared at him like they were saying ‘you’re crazy!!!’

“What? You guys still need a home right?!” Heba was right; they DID need a home after a raid on their small village killing their parents. But the palace?! No way! It was too fancy and that would make them nervous… At least Heba found a place he could call home, he seemed happy. “Come on!!” Heba grabbed the two and dragged them to the palace.

“HEBA!!!” the two girls struggled but Heba ignored them, because he knew that, deep down, they wanted to go.

~at the palace~

“Heba welcome back how did the errands go?” a tall woman with long black hair greet as they entered

“It went well, thank you, Ishizu!” Heba smiled at Ishizu as she looked at Kari & Iris

“And who are they?” Ishizu gestured to Kari and Iris

“They,” Heba started “are my old friends, we go way back! This is Iris. And this is Kari” Kari and Iris bowed respectfully when their name was said.

“Well, they seem very nice.” Ishizu then gestured them to follow her

“Come on lets go meet the pharaoh and his son” Heba walked off while Kari and Iris slowly walked in shock of what was happening. They were going to go meet the PHAROH!  Oh man! They were jittery from head to toe and wouldn’t calm down. When they entered the throne room they saw the great Aknamkanon and his son Atemu! Kari and Iris wanted to run out and half way to the other side of Egypt they were so nervous. And apparently they were showing it because Aknamkanon chuckled

“Calm down you two,” he started “it’s all right.” He got up walked toward them and stopped about on foot away “what are your names?” he asked with a kind smile Iris spoke first

“I-I’m Iris” she tried to say with courage then Kari stepped up

“My names Kari” she had calmed down enough to show some courage and this made Atemu smile from where he was

“They are good friends of mine sir, from back at my home village and I w-“Heba was about to ask if they could stay when Atemu got up and said

“It’s ok with me if it is ok with you father” he walked up and stood next to his dad who was inspecting the girls

“Yes, they can stay.” Aknamkanon smiled a bright smile as they jumped for joy and thanked them for their kindness

~later that night~

Kari had her own room for once and it felt weird “I wonder how Iris is” she thought ha she looked out her window at the sky. She soon heard a knock at the door “come in!” the door opened to reveal Atemu

“Hello. It is nice to meet you.” Kari’s face invented a new shade of red when she saw who it was

“h-hi! I-it’s n-nice to meet you two!” she stuttered slowly. Atemu looked outside at the dark starlight sky

“Kari, right, you should get some sleep you have a big day tomorrow. Ok?” he smiled as Kari nodded her head

“Ok… what about Iris? Is she ok?” Kari was concerned about her friend

“She’s fine.” Atemu headed for the door “good night, Kari” he left while Kari plopped on her bed, shocked at what just happened and she slowly drifted off to sleep

Iris: *smiling big*

Heba: ugh! Girls! I guess I’ll see you all next time... bye!
