The Best Luck Always Seems to Happen in the Worst of Times

Castiel's panic had shot through his chest as Dean walked in, his breath becoming irregular, his heart racing, and his wings clenching to his sides. As he looked vainly for his clothes, he knew that even if he had his trenchcoat, he wouldn't have been able to get it on in time. It was too late. So as his eyes met the curious green gaze of Dean's, he swallowed thickly, opening his mouth to explain himself, only to be cut off by Dean first.

"Jeez, Cas. What's with you being shirtless when it's like ten degrees outside and like thirty in here? Just look at the goosebumps on you skin.....good God your lips are turning blue!" Dean growled in annoyance, though the tone instantly became protective as he noticed the state of Castiel. Castiel couldn't respond, his jaw slack. Did Dean not care about his wings?

Dean rushed over, ignoring the stupid face that Castiel was making, and wrapped a fluffy orange blanket around the front of his shoulders. Castiel, on instinct, grabbed the blanket to keep it on his body, the warmth beconing him in. He didn't get to enbrace this warmth for long before Dean was looking by their feet, his eyebrows furrowing together. Castiel followed his gaze, his eyes landing on a black object; one of Castiel's feathers.

"Did a bird get in here?" Dean asked curiously, running his hand along the ridge. Castiel shivered, unable to stop his mind from imagining those perfectly sculpted hands running through his wings, sending pleasure straight from his shoulder blades down. Watching as those hands slowly slid from the gentle feathers to his bare..... Okay, Castiel, that's enough. Now is not the time.

"I don't know." Was all that Castiel could respond with. After all, why would Dean think a bird got in when Castiel's feathers were clearly visible? It didn't make any sense to the black-haired boy, until it finally clicked. Maybe they weren't visible.

If Dean had said anything else, Castiel didn't notice. No, instead of listening to his roommate, he was rushing to the bathroom, taking only a moment to turn on the light before almost throwing himself in front of the mirror. His eyes widened as he took in what he saw.

His wings were gone; well, not gone, but almost invisible. The only flaw he saw, and he had to look extremely hard to see it, was the slight shimmer that outlined the edges of the wings, or where they were supposed to be. He let out a half-laugh, half-gasp of amazement as a grin spread across his face. He had made his wings disappear for the first time.

"What are you grinning at?" He heard Dean say, causing Castiel to jump back from the mirror and turning his back away from Dean. He still had to remain careful around his roommate. Just because they were invisible didn't mean that they couldn't be felt or heard.

"Nothing" Castiel replied hastily, meeting the gaze of the boy who had an amused smirk playing on his lips. Castiel, in an attempt to get some clothes on as he actually was beginning to feel the cold - how he  didn't feel it before was beyond him- had tried to walk past Dean. He was left confused, which was clear in the way his eyes narrowed, as Dean blocked the exit.

Castiel met his gaze once more, not realizing he had looked away in the first place. He didn't realize, but this close, he could see the color clearly in his roommate's eyes, and soon became lost in the beauty of them. They reminded him of the plants in Heaven's garden, the color the prettiest green in existance. When he had been to his heaven for his first, and only, time, he remembered that Joshua, the angel that watched over the gardens, had told him that Earth could never have the same beauty and depth of color that heaven had, making it obsenely more beautiful. Yet, here was a human, with the same color green eyes, and Castiel felt as if had went home to heaven when he looked into them, feeling safer than he had ever felt.

Without even realizing it, Castiel had reached up, slowly running his fingers around his eyes, his own blue orbs wide in wonder. He sensed rather than felt Dean begin to move, and felt a flutter in his heart, his mind snapping back to reality. What was he doing? He didn't get a chance to pull away though before Dean's hand covered his, pinning it to the freckled-face boy's cheek. Castiel didn't know why, but he felt the need to say something.

"You have very pretty eyes" Castiel managed to mumble, the tips of his fingers tracing over the cheekbones of the boy, unable to move his hand anywhere else with Dean's hand on top. He felt the gentle but firm fingers wrap around the back of his palm, a chuckle escaping Dean's lips as he slowly pulled their hands from his face.

"They're just green. It's nothing special." Dean said with a half shrug, neither of them realizing that they were still holding hands. Castiel frowned, his eyes narrowing as he looked at the modest expression on the green-eyed boy's face. Just green? They seem to glow with their own heavenly light! How are they.... Castiel's thoughts trailed off, his eyes starting to grow wide. Dean tipped his head, a look of concern replacing his modesty, but Castiel didn't notice, as only one thought was running through his head. Why did they glow?!

"Cas, buddy, you okay?" Dean asked, letting go of Castiel's hand and placing his on the angel's shoulders. His eyebrows furrowed as Castiel jerked away, the noise escaping the blue-eyed boy's lips almost unnatural, as if Dean had burned him. Castiel began to shiver, almost feeling his face begin to pale as he pushed past Dean, rushing into the bedroom before disappearing with only a flutter of wings to ever show that he had been there.

"Please! Tell me what's going on!" Castiel said, his voice now in a dead panic as he looked at the man before him. He might not look like much at first glance, with his slightly smaller stature and innocent looking face, but this was in fact God, or Chuck as the humans knew him as. At this moment, Castiel was almost on his knees begging for answers, with Chuck trying to get him to calm down long enough to where he could speak. It took several minutes, but he finally managed to quiet the angel down.

"Castiel, it's okay, just explain what's going on, slowly this time." Chuck said gently, pulling Castiel to a seat on the couch. The angel took a deep breath, not noticing as his father slipped a blanket over his wings and shoulders, and began to recount his tale. Knowing that he could hide nothing from Chuck, as the man probably already knew, he went into detail of everything, even of his roommates beautifully sculpted body. Chuck only nodded, a half smile hidden behind the hand that covered his mouth as he listened thoughtfully.

When Castiel finally finished, Chuck let out a soft sigh, moving his hand from his mouth to the angel's shoulder, squeezing it reassuringly. "Castiel, it's nothing to worry about. That human, Dean Winchester, is one of the most important souls I have ever created. Not only is he the perfect vessel for any angel, he is also the most worthy human. You see, he and his brother, were created to make this world a better place, and no matter how much they convince themselves they don't matter, they step in to try despite the odds, because they refuse to let innocent people down. Do you understand what I'm saying?" Chuck explained, leaving Castiel in awe. He merely nodded, which made Chuck chuckle.

"But why does his eyes glow?" Castiel asked after a minute, when he finally felt his voice return to him. Chuck seemed to ponder this a moment, a small frown crossing his face before it lit up with glee. Castiel didn't understand what this meant, but it made his heart race nevertheless.

"That's not something I can share until your ready." Chuck said, patting Castiel's shoulders before standing up and walking back over to his desk of cluttered papers. Castiel always had asked about those papers too, but he had said the same thing as he did just then. Despite knowing that Chuck would not tell him, Castiel let out a soft whine, crossing his arms over his chest. Chuck laughed at his child-like face, shaking his head in amusement as he sat down.

"Don't worry. The time when I can share with you is very soon. Until then, befriend that Dean boy. He might be good for you." Chuck reassured, though it didn't stifle Castiel's curiosity any. However, Castiel nodded and stood, about to take off when Chuck stopped him, his expression turning serious. "You know not to disclose my whereabouts to any of your brothers or sisters, right? Remember. Only you can know who I truly am."

Castiel nodded once more, not fully understanding on why Chuck hadn't wanted him to tell any of the other angels, but knew that Chuck always had a good reason. He wasn't even supposed to know that Chuck was God to begin with. It was actually an accident on how he discovered it, but he was sure glad he did. He loved visiting his father.

Dean's POV

Dean had rushed out of the bathroom after Castiel only to find the boy gone. He had looked everywhere, even going outside in the freezing weather to find him, but to no avail. He had given up when his fingers had gone numb, finally returning to his dorm and turning up the heat - why Castiel hadn't done it when the temperature started dropping, he had no idea.

It was around eight o'clock at night when he finally heard a soft knock on the door. He got up, rushing over to the door and unlocking it -he always kept it locked because of habit and paranoia - and revealing a shivering Castiel, who was still naked from the waist up.

"Cas! Get in!" Dean shouted, grabbing the boy and pulling him in, shutting the door behind him. As it sunk in that his roommate was back and not dead, he slowly relaxed, not realizing how tense he had been up until that moment. He turned back to the boy, ready to tear him a new one, only to stop when he saw something like admiration in his eyes.

"Why are you staring at me like that? Wait, no, more importantly. Let's get your dumbass warmed up! What were you thinking going out in this weather with nothing but pants on! You could have froze to death! Or worse! Some guys could have kidnapped you off the street and sold you off as a slave!" Dean continued ranting and yelling at Castiel as he collected a shirt and blankets for the boy, fussily watching as Castiel put the shirt on before piling almost ten blankets on him. His ranting became weirder and weirder as it went on, rambling about a cucumber and a banana before Castiel finally cut him off.... by pulling him onto the couch beside him.

"What did you pull me down for?" Dean asked, forgetting about his anger. Castiel only shrugged, smiling softly to himself as he pushed a couple of the blankets over to Dean. the green-eyed boy took them reluctantly, draping them over his legs and watching as Castiel snuggled under his pile of blankets.

"Thank you for looking out for me, Dean." Castiel said, his voice still formal, but it dropped an edge that made Dean's heart flutter - totally platonic flutter of course - and making him pull one of the blankets to his face to hide his blush.

"S-shut up! It's normal to look out for your friends!" Dean said, his voice showing his stubborness. He finally turned his head, meeting the gaze of the boy with the angel blue eyes. They both couldn't help but smile sweetly.

Dean, of course, ended the chick flick moment with a mutter about a show coming on at that time and turning on the TV. Though even he could not stop himself from sitting close enough that they began sharing the blankets, watching movies until they both drifted to sleep.
