Ride by her side

Alistair's Pov

I exited my dad's space and rushed in our room's direction. I convinced myself to hide some details from Evelyn. As soon as I entered my room, I encountered her sitting on the bed, with her hands crossed around her stomach. She goggled in my direction like she was waiting for my entry. I waved her, showing off my teeth, but she didn't wave me back, so I let my hands loose, and buried them to where they belong, which is, inside my pockets.

"Uh-hi", I went closer to her, and pulled the chair, but picked it up when I realized that the screech was unbearable to hear.

"I've to tell you something", Evelyn waited for me to settle my ass on the chair.

"Go on", I mimicked her body style, and sat right in front of her, all focused. Maybe, she did gather some information that could actually help me carry on with the further investigation. Okay, now I was the one who felt like Nancy Drew.

"Umm, when I was trying to divert Mr. Ashton's attention, he got a call. I'm not sure about the person he was speaking with, or he was seriously removing his frustration on someone who was on the other side of the phone", she was literally beating around the bush. I wanted to listen to the facts, not the exact detailing of the happening.

"Oh yeah, no she had to leave necessarily, but I don't really think that she's on her way home. She maybe is somewhere else to complete some unfinished business", she paused for a while and then continued "That's none of my business, okay?" she recited everything in a manly voice like she was mimicking someone.

"Those were the exact words I heard", she concluded her statement "Did you find anything?" she interrogated.

Now, I was blank for words. I could either tell her the truth or lie like I usually did. "I, um", I stammered at the word I and continued "I actually found nothing" I lied again and continued "Oh, wait. I did find something. He was in some serious conversation with your mother, but, I couldn't overhear them clearly since I was stuck below the bed", Okay at least the latter part of my statement was true.

"Damn!" she responded and I started to walk towards the washroom. I quickly freshened up and looked at myself in the mirror. When I saw Evelyn sleeping on the bed leisurely, I strolled towards her "Hey. We need to leave" she nodded "Right now", I awoke her from her leisure time. She quickly gathered herself, her hair and sat in an upright position. It felt as though she showed that she was ready to leave but her body told a different story.

I opened the door for her and waited for her to exit the room first. I handed the key to the receptionist and walked towards the parking area. I opened the door of my car again for her, which I know was quite gentle-man-ish but she brought the gentle from my man out. I buckled my seat belt, and she did hers as well.

"Oh look. Mr. Dickman" Evelyn pointed in dad's car's direction. A pair of sunglasses surfaced his eyes, and his hands were planted on the steering wheel. He had a Bluetooth device connected to his right ear, and his lips moved which meant that he was definitely talking with someone.

"Oh my, yeah, he is", I gasped. I was under an impression that he already left because if I would've had the slightest clue then I wouldn't have left my room without double assuring myself.

"What. Oh my, he is...?" she mimicked me again. I was starting to wonder whether my actions were different, or mostly weird. "Go follow him"

"What? follow him?"

"You act like he's your father"

I swallowed the lump in my throat and decided to act as normal as I could. I fake smiled, mostly grinned whilst looking at her. "What-father- Noooo" I tried diverting her mind with my smile. I swear if some toothpaste brand would've seen me grinning like this, they would definitely acknowledge me as the lead actor of their commercial.

"You're serious--?" I interrogated raising a brow.

"Dead serious", I waited for dad to start his vehicle and as soon as he did, I let him take the lead, and I carefully followed him whilst keeping the distance.

I took a halt when I realized that my car was too close to his and I was pretty sure that it wouldn't take a blink of his eye to acknowledge my car. "Who are you?" I looked at Evelyn and furrowed my brows whilst doing the same. She stayed silent "Sherlock? Nancy Drew? Agatha Christie", she pouted at my answers, and then slightly smiled.

She peeped through the window, and when I felt that dad's car was far enough, I started the vehicle again. "Oh wait!" she signaled me to halt the car.

"Why...?" I kept driving. "Do you need to pee?" I smirked as I questioned again.

"No, I guess I just saw a picture of you on the poster. There was something written beneath it too, but it was in French. I want to see if there's some English translation for it" she kept leaning her head out of the window.

"Hey, it's not safe. Put your head back in" I pulled her through her arms.

She pouted like a little baby and replied "You looked so fine in that picture"

"You mean drop-dead handsome?"

"Yeah, I can agree to that!" she smiled winking. "But how is your picture there? Are you some celebrity?"

"Maybe yes...!" I laughed "It was one of those pictures in which I had to promote the clothing brand. I deal in fabrics" this was one of the finest lines I've ever said to her. I was turning into a lie machine and I truly was regretting it and feeling guilty about it.

I glanced at her face and was pleased to notice her reaction. It felt like she was flattered. "Impressive", she breathed in. I'm glad that she has no idea about French because if she knew then I'd be in one heck of trouble already. The subtitle on the poster read "Let the young generation evolve. Start by choosing your representative as one. Vote for Alistair Dickman" I'm glad that my name was written at the bottom. Maybe Evelyn would've been so disappointed in not knowing French that she didn't consider reading my signature at the bottom.

"Has your company ever worked for Mr. Dickman?" Okay, Evelyn, you're giving me anxiety. Stop already.

"Me..?" I faked a laugh "Yeah! I guess. I mean, I don't handle accounts. Even if he had purchased something from me, I wouldn't have a clue about it", I bit my lower lip "You seem too interested in him"

"Yeah, I am", I cornered my eyes and tightened my lips whilst looking in her direction. "No, I mean. Not in that way. I just want to meet him, to have a talk with him. I want to know the real reason why he's helping my mom in such a shameful, illegal act"

"Why are you so sure that he's helping your mom? Maybe your mom is using him. We can't jump directly to conclusions. We need to know the real story first", the vexed involvement of my father with his mother never failed to annoy me. Everything was so complicated and the worst part was that I couldn't do anything about it.

The next few minutes were silent. No one among us spoke. Evelyn may have the thought that I turn protective when it comes to Mr. Dickman but why wouldn't I? He was my father and I had every right to offend anything and everything which points negative fingers in his direction.

One thing was pretty sure about this day my Arnold-Alistair drama had to stop as soon as possible. Today, Evelyn saw one poster of me, she can and may see other posters around her locality in the coming days, and the worst about them would be that they won't be in French. Secondly, I was pretty sure to confront my father about the happening.

Evelyn had her eyes glued outside the window while I drove. I took quick glimpses of her as and when I could. Who was this girl and what was she doing to me? She was a package full of complications and although I was afraid to deepen my bond with her, I was willing to take a chance. It felt like every bone in my body was possessed by her, in a good way, bad way, evil way, sensual way.

"I don't know where he's heading to, but, I'm pretty sure that it's the city we live in", I tightened my grip on the steering wheel, and turned it right. As soon as dad took a halt at the motel, I parked someplace away from it. I peeped through the window to have a look at the motel. I was convinced that he took a halt for refreshment purposes.

I laced my own fingers with each other and fidgeted with my thumbs. Evelyn was watching me. I could feel it....so I decided to not look in her direction. "What if mom's home..?" I could see three stress lines on her forehead. She clearly was scared, very scared.

"Nothing is gonna happen. That lady, whom I bribed, is going to inform me if she does, okay?" I loosed my hands and propelled my right hand in direction of her face. I softly stroked her cheeks with my thumbs whilst leaning towards her. I wanted to kiss her. Damn!

She stayed silent, calm, and straight while I kept stroking my hand against her soft cheeks. My urge to kiss her deepened when she bit her bottom lips nervously making it all wet, and to be honest, making me wet. When I could no longer control my emotions, I leaned close to her. My forehead touched hers, our noses contacted each other.

Our lips slightly touched, but I was alarmed when she cleared her throat. Was that a mistake? Did I do something wrong? Fuck yourself, Alistair. This girl made me think about things I actually never thought about, precisely a girl's mind. I reluctantly pulled myself away, though the gravitational force of her lips was irresistible.

I allowed my eyes to stay glued with hers because I was expecting an explanation. Maybe, a reality check! "Mr. Dickman"

"Yes! I am", I gasped when I realized what just escaped my mouth. I quickly took charge of the situation and examined dad leaving the hotel. "Yes! I am watching him too", I acted like I was completing my previous statement.

"Seems like you were a bit distracted"

"Can't blame those red fuller juicy attractive kissable---"

"Okay stop", she blushed and looked away. Okay, wait. Did I just make her blush? Level up Alistair. I did a quick victory dance in my mind before regaining my driving position.

As soon as dad's car moved, I started following him again. This time, more cautiously because dad always stayed alert. One wrong move of mine could get me arrested, in my own house. I remember last time he caught me in a cheap club, he blocked all my credit cards and I was forced to stay home for a month. I sometimes wondered about how unprivileged I was, though I had all the wealth.

I kept driving, and Evelyn corresponded with me during the journey. It wasn't much of a correspondence. It was more of an interrogation. I asked her questions, while she answered them slowly and silently. I was more than shocked when I perceived the destination where dad's car took a stop. Evelyn was as shocked as I was.

It was Evelyn's building. The building where the story began, where I met Evelyn for the first time! "Oh no", Evelyn's mouth formed an 'o' and so did mine. I wanted to defend dad but seemed like he was wrongly involved in something which couldn't be defended. We waited for dad to exit his car, and as soon as he did, he sprinted inside the building.

"Damn!" Evelyn sighed.

"Damn!" I repeated.

10 minutes down
20 minutes down
50 minutes down
100 minutes down

"What is he doing inside? Hiring a prostitute?" I banged the steering wheel aggressively with my palms. Later, I realized the exact word which escaped my mouth. Evelyn's face was dim like she didn't expect such curse words from my mouth.

"I'm sorry. I totally didn't mean it"

I looked at her, and she looked away the moment my eyes met hers. Damn, I definitely hit the wrong spot. Oh no! I suck big time. I addressed her indirectly with the word I was most afraid to label her with.

She parted her lips, to speak, to maybe offend, to maybe walk away. I was scared, scared of losing her.
