2: Returning The Favor
"Get the boat ready churl, Lord Winder orders." Fool.
Poor Arlen nodded and clenched his fists wanting to break the jaw of the young knight who had a pretty big foul mouth for his age.
"And get your scutage from thee king, even though it wouldn't cause anything to your poverty" The young knight laughed and slapped Arlen's back causing him to jolt forward due to force and for the young knight to remove his hand.
"Now my hand is dirty, I shall cut my hand off my body before the poverty germs get to me too." Arlen just rolled his eyes and continued watering his flowers.
When all the knights left he looked around and sneakily left for the forest.
"Hail! Emerald!" He shouted upon reaching the forest.
He was really happy to meet her and felt his heart beating fast at the mere thought of him meeting his beauty.
His beauty. The thought alone made him blush not realizing that Emerald jumped in front of him scaring the sunrise out of him.
"Lady! Ya scared the sunrise out of me." The beauty just laughed wholeheartedly and smiled at him clutching his heart obviously afraid.
"Apology Arlen, but I like to greet ya this way. Much more fun." The second his name rolled off her tongue, being coated by her sweet angelic voice, he felt blood rush to his cheeks and his heart to beat as fast as a track horse.
She giggled snapping him out of his trance and for him to look at her sitting on the same log. It seems like it's their place now. As if they have marked that log as theirs.
He went beside her and sat on the other log, looking at her beautiful Raven black hair to flow and bounce with the wind.
"Say, anything happened today?" Emerald asked while fiddling with her fingers. She could feel the same energy that Arlen could feel between them causing her to blush too.
"Nay, nothing other than the same insults and looks of grimace people throwing at me. And let's not talk about that young witless knight. I wanted to break his jaw and hear him groan in pain." Arlen spoke with clenched fists and jaw.
Emerald raised her hand to hold his hand in hers to comfort him but her eyes widened knowing she can't. She lowered her hand in sadness and looked away not wanting to meet his eyes. It was hurtful. Alot.
"Can I ask ya a question, Arlen?" He nodded his head and gulped feeling the same blush, heart race when she took his name.
"Did ya not care about how ya were commiting a sin by taking ya precious life?" Arlen was a bit taken aback from her question. He wanted to answer. He really did. But he didn't know with what. What would he answer? That he did thought. That he was about to commit a sin and leave this world with his soul going to hell?
He did think all that. But he let his emotions get the best of him, "Aye, I did."
He answered simply and straightforwardly not wanting to talk about his psychotic thoughts with her.
"If ya did, ya still was so sure when putting the axe in ya?" Arlen nodded his head stiffly and shuddered at the thought of his pain and how he whimpered.
"Ya know Arlen, This world, it's cruel. Really cruel. Fellers tend to lower your strength so they can feel wise and superior. They tend to make you feel unworthy, unloved, to make ya feel revolting. They feel superior, they feel powered."
The beauty just kept talking with Arlen listening to her carefully. He was actually listening and not just watching and creeping on the angelic beauty beside him.
"And what do we do?.....We let ourselves get bounded to them. We let ourselves get used to their insults, looks and judging." She looked at him maintaining eye contact for a mere second.
"What if I wasn't there? What if I was too late? What if ya would have already committed a sin? What would have happened if I only came upto your corpse?"
He visibly shuddered when images of his lifeless body were churning in his mind.
Emerald smiled at him and he smiled back. How could he not? A simple look from her and he would smile like this for eternity.
Arlen shook his head and cleared his throat wanting to ask a question which has been on his mind for some time now, "How'd ya find me?"
She blinked at him thrice and then looked down. She didn't know. She truly didn't. It was as if an energy, a power, a force pulled her towards him.
So, wanting to only tell Arlen the truth she mumbled.
"I don't know."
Arlen nodded and asked a question once again, "Ya talk like ya have experienced this art of suicidal." He chuckled but she looked up and his chuckled died down.
She had a look of sadness, grief, pain visible on her face. No happiness were floating in her eyes like they usually do. Her natural emerald eyes were filled with an unreadable floatation.
"It's nay the art of suicidal. It be experience." Arlen's eyes widened when he realized what emerald said.
"Don't look so shocked. Nothing to be shocked about." Arlen shook his head wanting to tell her she's wrong.
"Ya? A beauty. A lady with a phenomenal voice. Has experience?" She nodded causing his heart to best faster.
What has this poor angel gone through? He thought.
"Life was.... Is... Disturbing. It always will be. I don't think a person can forever be happy or forever be sad. Ya will always have ya balance. Imagine people only being happy. How the world was supposed to go? How were people suppose to remember their God? How was life suppose to go on?" He kept listening to her, giving his attention to her.
"When I was young. Had troubles. Wanted to be free, wanted to get away. So I thought what every other coward thinks when life gets hard. I found an easy way instead of the hard way. I didn't want to suffer for longer. I didn't want to be h're for longer. So, I did what a coward would do, I planned how everything would go. Just when it was the time. I was stopped. I was shaken and realized how I was wasting my time. How I could have improved myself rather than deciding my faith myself."
Arlen felt like he was in pain. Hearing her thoughts and troubles he felt like he was in that mental pain once again. Like he was caged, trapped all over again.
"Hail! breathe! Breathe Arlen!" He could hear Emerald screaming his name but all he could feel was darkness engulfing him.
The next thing he knows he wakes up in a small cave which stinged of a foul smell.
He looks around trying to find out what happened.
"Ya okay now?" He heard the same angelic voice and his head snapped towards the direction of the voice.
Emerald was sitting beside him but with a distance. She knew her boundaries.
"Where am I?" She shrugged and stood up.
"Come 'ere....Follow me." She walked out of the cave with her green coat bouncing behind her and touchig the grass and dirt.
He stood up and started walking to who knows where. He was just happy to be with her. She'd ask him to follow her to a death trail and he would, just happy to be with her.
Some time later Arlen found himself standing beside the log where he met his beauty.
"Sit" he obeyed and sat on the log with her beside him.
"May I know what happened?" She shook her head and replied, "Nay, ya may not."
Arlen was confused as to why she wasn't being as cheery as she usually was or why she wasn't smiling, showing her pearly teeth.
"Everything okay?" She nodded.
"Aye. Just got a bit confused seeing ya faint... Ya fainted when I completed my grief filled story." She said still holding the same cold expression.
He nodded feeling ashamed. He didn't want to be a burden on her. She's probably closed off because I am irresponsible. I mean, who 20 year old can't handle himself?
She noticed the hesitation in his eyes and looked down.
She just got sacred seeing him faint like that. She got scared thinking about what if she lost him again? She got scared thinking how he would go back to his ways, his thoughts.
Arlen decided to break the silence and thank the beauty who saved him and helped him, "Iam grateful for thee. I wouldn't be here listening to the birds chirping, the trees moving, flowers dancing, without ya. Gramercy."
She smiled at him and he felt at peace, at ease, once again. He smiled back and she looked down.
"Nay need to say. Just returning the favor." Emerald said looking forward too deep in her thoughts.
Arlen nodded hesitantly obviously confused.
They both just sat there, beside the lake, surrounded by a comfortable silence, smiling at each other once in a while.
"Ay! Feller!!" Suddenly he was grabbed by his collar and punched straight in the nose.
"We been searching for you and you here sitting by the lake enjoying!?" The young knight looked liked he was on a mission to kill the poor boat boy.
Arlen not caring about himself but Emerald, looked back to see her gone.
Thank heavens, she ran. He thought and by being grabbed by his collar he was thrown into his little cottage.
"You stay here, you filthy rat! Fellers been asking about you, and you there at the lake." Arlen nodded and clenched his fists.
The young knight smirked looking at his balled fists knowing he triggers Arlen in more ways than one.
Leaving Arlen in his little cottage, the knight disappeared not before telling the boat boy to die and be helpful to the world for once.
Arlen took no notice remembering the words of his beauty.
"Fellers tend to make you feel unworthy, unloved, to make you feel revolting. They feel superior, they feel power."
He smiled thinking about his beauty and slept a comfortable sleep on his crooked and filthy bed. But for once he didn't care. All he wanted was to go back to the forest and be with her. Be at peace. Be at ease.
