one.
"Eliza! Could you take table four, please? I'm slammed with all these to go orders." Maria, the assistant manager of the coffee shop that Eliza worked at called to her.
Eliza broke out of her day dream, and grabbed the small pad of paper and a pen and made her way over to the table by the window.
"Hi, welcome to Reynolds Coffee. My name is Eliza, what can I get for you today?" Eliza asked and flipped to a blank sheet.
Over the years the coffee shop has expanded into much more than your typical coffee shop. It started as a small, cozy little shop with only about three chairs, and at that time, people would just order and leave.
But now, the shop has expanded greatly. They started serving foods like pastries, baked goods, bread, biscotti's, sandwiches, and fresh fruit all alongside with coffee. There's a fair amount of tables and chairs with the perk of free wifi.
As Eliza looked back up at the family who she was serving, she noticed a tall, handsome, figure pass by the shop. She watched this man walk until he was completely out of view. She bit her lip at his mysterious look.
"Hello? Miss?" The mother of the family asked.
Eliza blinked out of her state once again. "Oh, I'm sorry. What was that? You'd like a turkey and cheese panini with an espresso to drink?" Eliza asked, writing down and completing the order.
Eliza smiled and tore the small page out "okay, I'll be back with your order shortly." She said as she walked back to the counter, placing the order sheet in the window for the chefs.
As Eliza waited for the order to be made, she leaned against the counter, looking back out at the window, hoping that the mysterious man would pass by again.
That man struck her interest and she wanted to see him again. She kept watching the window, until Maria gently shook her out of yet again, another day dream.
"Hey, 'Liza, come on. It's the day you finally learn how to make coffee. We need to speed things up, so you're gonna help me make the drinks now." Maria smiled and guided Eliza over to the machines.
Eliza sighed to herself, but nodded, looking at the window one last time before focusing.
"Alright, have you ever made anything in your life before?" Maria asked, knowing Eliza's background.
"Well, I made a sandwich one time!" Eliza nodded, proudly.
Maria let out a laugh and shook her head. "Oh, darling. Let me guess, your maids, personal chefs, and servants made everything for you, didn't they?"
Eliza sighed but nodded. She knew she was lucky to have grown up, and to still be living in wealth.
"Alright, it's okay. I'll teach you." Maria said and started setting everything up. "Okay, let's start with the hot drinks first."
Maria proceeded to teach and show Eliza how to make a simple cup of coffee, and some espresso.
Eliza smiled "hey, that's pretty easy!" Eliza said and made some coffee. "I think I could handle this."
Maria smiled "there ya' go!" She patted Eliza's back. "Alright! Now, let's try a smoothie."
Eliza nodded confidently and smiled "that shouldn't be hard." She said as she walked over to the blender.
"Actually, Maria, I got this one!" Eliza said and started adding the ingredients for a strawberry banana smoothie.
Maria smiled and nodded, going back to the customers.
As Maria was serving them, she thought she should mention something to Eliza.
"Eliza, I almost forgot if the blender gets jammed, don't stic-" Maria said and turned around, seeing Eliza holding her bleeding hand.
Eliza made the rookie mistake of trying to unjam a blender by sticking her hand in while the blade was running.
"Oh dear. This is what I was going to tell you." Maria frowned and helped Eliza into the staff room. "Let me look at it." She said and gently moved Eliza's hand away from the bleeding one.
Eliza looked at her mangled fingers and hand and tried her best not to cry, though the pain was unbearable.
"Maria, it hurts!" Eliza called out, the pain getting worse.
Maria nodded and grabbed some paper towels, applying them to the wounds.
"Okay, keep pressure on it, we have to go to the emergency room." Maria said and guided Eliza to the car.
Once in the car, Eliza sighed and closed her eyes. She tried to block out the pain by thinking of the man she saw earlier.
Boy, how she wishes she'd see him again.
