10 - Table Talk
*Sam's POV*
It's been a couple of hours since we went to the field and I was getting bored. So I thought, why not cook!
My mom was never good at cooking in general but she had things she could really pull off. Such as what I'm about to make.
I stuck my head in my nieces and Abuelas room. They were in the middle of Bible study with Lucia.
"Um, Abuela can I cook something?"
"Sure thing. Just clean after."
Well then here we go.
I took out a frying pan and set it on the stove.
As for ingredients I took out rice, a tomato, onions, a green bell pepper and a glass of water.
I put some oil on the pan and cut up the veggies evenly. First the onion. Wait till it loses its color to add some flavor to the grease. Then the pepper. Add some rice and stir well. After the rice gains some color add the tomato and press down on it to smash it. Stir well once more. Add some water and the secret ingredient, (Goya flavoring.) Put the lid on and wait till the water has evaporated. Done!
Now, what should the main course be? It has to be something that won't take up much money. Hmm.
"We're back!"
"Cathy! Quick what's a good that goes with mom's rice and would be very affordable?"
"Uhh, fish?"
I looked over at the pila where the fish were from the market.
Bingo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Mm. Sam this is delicious!"
"Yeah! Where'd you learn to make this?"
I chuckled. "It was my mother's favorite thing to cook."
"Oh your, mother. She was my little girl."
Suddenly the attention was toward Abuela.
"She didn't have an easy life, and it kills me everyday knowing that I could've helped, but didn't."
"She grew up with her grandmother for the most part, and well, my mother was never easy on us, or on her. She was always so skinny. So, so skinny. Food never came easy but I think if I raised her she might've had it easier." Abuela was at the peak of tears now.
"It's not just your fault suegra." Uncle Benjamin spoke up. He was always quiet so now the attention was on both of them.
"I never was easy on her either, and these days I wish I could apologize but what's been done has been done. All we can do is let them rest."
"Sam?"
I turned suddenly.
"How was she buried?"
Ouch. That stuck a chord in my heart.
"Well since both of them suffered from the accident, they were buried together. Like they always said they wanted to be."
"I'm glad she found your father. You know, he used to call her everyday and they would talk for hours on end. One day, he came and picked her up. They went to the suburbs, the beach, his hometown. She didn't come home for almost a week."
I smiled thinking of her. I looked over at Cathy and she looked the same.
You really don't know what you have until it's gone.
I locked my phone and smiled. I loved talking with them. It really feels like they're more members of this huge crazy family.
I walked over to the living room in the outer house and saw everyone sitting down and talking. What was interesting though, was the three M's dancing. Of course they were kids but I just laughed at the way they moved. Martin was too stiff, Mariposa was way too young to comprehend any counts so she copied what her sister did and Maria was surprisingly good. Anytime a new song came on she would find the rhythm really fast and she wasn't too loose or stiff. She had talent.
Then the song changed again and Cathy pulled me to dance with them, and well, who I am to not do it?
As the song played I remembered a choreography that we learned a while ago and I was doing that, but then I saw everyone doing there own thing and said to heck with it.
If you always have a routine to follow, life can get boring. Yeah sometimes people don't like change but how could we live if everything was always the same? Wouldn't we go insane from repeatedly saying the same things and doing the same actions? I don't know about everyone else but I think that I would.
Well, I guess life knew about it because dancing here with my newfound family was definitely, not in my agenda for my life at the moment, but the change was worth it. We stopped dancing and everyone looked at me and Cathy smiling asking about our talent. The twins even asked us to teach them despite their young age.
Yeah, the change was worth it.
