Chapter Seventy-One
Channing felt out of place as he sat in the back of the rolls royce, the leather headrest cushions were etched with A+B 14th Feb 1996.
He could see from the car windows, the mansion. He certainly began to feel out of place as the gate slide open. Channing watched as the driver gave a small nod to a security guard by the gate.
Channing watched as it felt like the mansion was moving closer, his heart raced. He didn't understand why he was here.
He felt the car stop, he swallowed hard as the driver stepped out of the car.
Channing felt like he couldn't move. He felt like he didn't belong.
He jumped a little as the driver opened the back door "Sir."
Channing swallowed hard again, he forced himself to step out of the car.
"Just wait by the front door, Mr and Mrs Harlow know you're here."
Channing didn't understand what the driver meant by Mr and Mrs Harlow as he looked at the driver. He slowly moved his attention to the front door, he forced himself to step up the porch steps.
Channing could feel his heart race.
"FUCK!"
Channing knew that voice, the voice he loved. He wished the person who owned that voice wasn't behind that door.
"BELLE!"
Channing didn't recognise that voice.
"FUCK SAKE,ALYTAIN! JUST OPEN THE DOOR!"
The way the woman's voice yelled that sentence, Channing felt his heart sink. He knew. He didn't want to believe it, but he knew.
Channing jumped a little as the door pulled open, he looked at the man standing in front of him.
They were two completely different men.
Channing was a man who lived within his means, a man who knew his fair share of heartbreak, his fair share of pain and his fair share of reality.
Alytain was a man who indulged too much in fiction, a man who indulged in neglecting his family while giving them false promises, a man who let rehab become his second home and the stage become his first love.
Alytain stared down Channing.
"Sorry, I think. I have the wrong address." Uncertainty filled Channing's voice.
Alytain kept his fixed gaze on Channing "You're the fucker."
"Alytain."
Channing knew that voice.
Hannah stepped out from the lounge room, she looked at the two men "We need to talk."
Channing couldn't believe it. He knew something was wrong, he didn't think it was something like this. "This is?"
Hannah nodded "This is Alytain."
"Belle's husband."
Channing looked at Alytain, Did he say Belle? Maybe there was a good excuse. Hannah did say her and Alytain were exes.
"Alytain, let Channing in."
"No."
"Alytain." Hannah sighed.
Alytain breathed heavily "Of all the woman.."
"Alytain, don't start. Not again."
Channing noticed Hannah had been crying, he watched as she disappeared into the lounge room. He watched as Alytain hesitated to move away, he watched as Alytain hesitated to walk into the lounge room.
Channing took his first step into the mansion, things looked different to his house.
The mansion was full of album plaques, barely any family photos littered the walls except for one that caught his eye.
A wedding photo; Belle, Alytain, Harley and Bill standing together as a family in a frame.
Channing could see how young Belle looked; he could see how tiny Harley was. He easily recognised Bill.
He took a step into the lounge room. He noticed Alytain trying to sit comfortably next to Belle while Hannah tried to shift away from him. He noticed two rings sitting on the coffee table.
Channing recognised the engagement ring he had given Hannah. He swallowed hard as he uncomfortably sat across from the two of them.
"Channing, I never meant to hurt you."
That sentence stung his heart.
Hannah closed her eyes for a second, she needed to find her truth. The truth she had buried for so long.
"Babe?" Alytain asked.
Hannah raised her hand to Alytain before slowly opening her eyes, she looked up at him "We already talked, it's his turn."
Channing watched how differently the two of them spoke to each other, Hannah had never spoken to him like that.
Hannah lowered her hand; she shifted her painful gaze to Channing "I don't even know how to say this."
Channing listened. He didn't know what to say.
Hannah swallowed hard "Alytain isn't my ex."
Channing could feel his heart shatter into a million pieces.
"I've been married to Alytain since I was nineteen." Her breathing became uneasy as her truth failed to find the surface "We. I. haven't divorced."
There it was the truth that Channing needed to hear. He could feel the pain in his throat as he tried to hold back his heartbreak and anger.
"Our relationship has never been perfect." She looked at Alytain "We've both lied to each other over the years, I think I lied the most." She shifted her gaze to Channing "I wasn't 100% truthful when I meet you, I just sugar-coated."
"You never loved me, did you?" Channing finally found his words.
"I did, I do." Hannah fumbled her words.
"Almost three years together, Hannah." Channing couldn't hide the pain in his voice.
"Try sixteen." Alytain injected.
"Shut up." Hannah snapped at Alytain.
Alytain scrunched his face up in anger at Hannah, he was the victim as much as Channing.
"The twins? Their his, aren't they?" Channing questioned, he let his words dig into the air.
Hannah shook her head.
"How can you be sure? You certainly disappeared a lot."
"Channing."
"No, Hannah. Your telling me that you've been married that whole time. The whole fucking time. You led me to believe that you were divorced. You told me that Alytain was a train wreck. His fucking sitting there." Channing jumped to his feet "I loved you. I wanted you to be my wife. You lied to me."
Hannah could feel her tears roll down her cheeks.
"I could handle hearing about Alytain, I could understand the lies you told me when you said you didn't trust him to be alone with your kids." Channing had no sympathy for Hannah in this very moment "Your dad knew didn't he?"
Hannah stayed silent.
"Your dad fucking knew. The two of you let me believe that we had something."
"Yo, mate. Chill."
"Chill? Don't tell me to chill. I just found out my girlfriend. Was married. Sorry, is still married. The kids her and I had, may not actually been mine." Channing fumed "You don't fucking get it."
"You think I don't?" Alytain rose up to his feet "I found out this morning. Twenty-five years together. Finding out my wife has been with another, pissed me off. I wanted to blow your fucking brains." Alytain didn't falter his words.
Hannah took a moment as she watched her truth reveal itself in the room.
"Alytain, you have no fucking excuse." Hannah finally found her words.
Channing turned his attention to Hannah, he watched as the tears rolled down her cheeks. He didn't care, he let his hatred in this moment full his mind as heartbreak ran inside his body.
"Channing, When you proposed I knew I had to tell you. Yes, my dad knew." Hannah swallowed her pride "He pushed me to tell you every damn day since the day he meet you. He was more worried about you than me, he was more worried about all the pain I was going to cause you than how it was going to affect me."
Channing hadn't realised how much Bill had truly cared about him.
"It's easy to lie." Hannah dropped her gaze to her hands as her voice started to break "it's easy to lie. When your husband taught you so well." She lifted her gaze to both the males in front of her.
Alytain allowed himself to take some of the blame.
"I never meant to hurt you." Hannah spoke.
"Yeah, well you did." Channing twisted his heartbroken gaze to Alytain before dropping it painfully onto Hannah "I'm not going to be part of this."
With that sentence, Hannah watched as Channing stormed out of the lounge room.
Hannah dropped her gaze to her hands as tears rolled down her face.
Alytain stood in silence as he tried to find what he should do.
