Present day

"The body of 17 year old Katrina Long was found on a popular Miami beach this morning." The woman reporter speaks as Katrina's mother stares at the screen in horror.

Her daughter has only been missing for a few days. She did not think she would ever see such terrible news, especially not this soon.

She is appalled that the police did not warn her before this became televised. She is finding out from a complete stranger.

"Police believe at this time that the cause of death is drowning and they suspect there has been no foul play involved in the demise of the young girl." The reporter continues.

Katrina's mother turns the tv off and kneels on the ground. She is in disbelief of how this woman found out about her daughter's death before she did.

She can't believe her only daughter is dead.

The world around her crumbles to pieces as she realizes she will never get to see her little girl ever again.

She will never get to see her smile, never hear her laugh, never hug her ever again.

Their last conversation rings over and over in her mother's head.

'I hate you!' Katrina screams as she runs upstairs and slams her bedroom door.

'Yeah, well I wish you had never been born!' Her mother yells back in the heat of the moment. She immediately regrets what she has said and knows there is no way to take her words back.

There is no hiding that Katrina was an accident. Her parents never wanted a child, it just kind of, happened...

And though her parents loved Katrina, they would never let her forget that she ruined their lives by being born.

But now she has also ruined their lives by dying. Her mother is broken. Her father does not know her body has been found yet but when he does, he too will cry for days straight.

Katrina's mother rises off the ground at the sound of a loud knocking at her door.

She floats over to the front door, unable to feel her feet hit the cold ground. She opens the door and stares at two officers on her front porch.

She knows what they are here for.

They tell her the news about her daughter even though she already knows what has happened. But that does not make their words any easier for her to hear. She collapses to the floor in tears.

The officers each grab an arm and lift her back on to her feet. They help walk her in to the kitchen and sit her down in a chair. They figure it is nicer to sit in an actual seat rather than the floor.

"Ma'am, where is your husband?" One officer asks.

The woman tries to calm herself down so she can answer the officers' questions to the best of her ability.

"Work. He's not home until-" she pauses to remember the time. "Later." She says, the exact time her husband gets out of work escaping her mind.

"Would you like us to stay with you until he gets home?"

Katrina's mother shakes her head. She just wants to be alone right now. She doesn't want to be forced to make small talk with these people. They just broke her heart. She does not want them in her home any longer than they need to be here.

"We will wait outside then, just until he gets home." They say, stepping towards the front door so they can leave her alone.

"I appreciate you looking after me and all, but I'm fine here alone. Can't you just come back once he is home?" She asks, wondering why they insist on staying.

One officer sighs. "Due to evidence, we believe Katrina may have been a victim of murder. And until her killer or killers are found, we would feel comfortable if no one in your family was left alone, just in case." He explains.

"But-" Katrina's mother covers her mouth. "I heard that woman on the news say you don't suspect foul play." She repeats the information she received on the TV not too long ago.

"That was upon our initial observations. After some more research and gathering of evidence, it is very clear that her death was not an accident." The other officer explains to her what she saw and how it differs from what they know. "The autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death to be sure."

Katrina's mother nods. This is now a homicide investigation. Her daughter did not die by accident. She was murdered.

"How did she die?" She asks.

"Unfortunately, we can't give out that information just yet. It could lead us to her killer."

Now you might be asking yourself one very interesting question. The entire town is asking the very same question.

Who Killed Katrina Long?
