Ada walked the breath and length of the entire police station, bored and tired. She decided to go to the forensic department to check on Kola. She greeted a few familar faces and ignored the rest that she had no idea of who they were.
She adjusted her shirt, the shirt Kola got for her on her last birthday. She also smoothened her hair properly. She was at his office door, ready to knock when she heard laughter.
Laughter from a woman.
She peeked through the window and her mouth flew open instantly. A woman was sitting across Kola, making stupid jokes and Kola was laughing, her very own Kola was laughing. She noticed the woman kept popping open the buttons of her shirt as if the heat was alarming and Kola, her Kola was licking his lips and laughing like a damn fool.
"You're not stealing my man." Ada silently muttered.
Without intending to knock, Ada opened the door and walked into the room with a sneaky smile on her face.
"What are you doing here, Ada? You should have knocked." Kola said with gritted teeth.
"I am not someone that needs to knock on your office door, are you hiding anything?" Ada asked, walking towards a chair.
"Ada, get out. I am talking to someone as you can see." Kola responded coldly.
"I can see na." Ada replied, "My name is Adam George, I'm a detective and who are you?" Ada faced the woman.
"I'm Stella, his new colleague in the forensics department." Stella shook Ada's hands.
"Oh wow, it's so nice to see you." Ada gave off a fake smile.
"Ada, what are you......." Kola started with a irritated look.
Ada interupted him, "I'm talking to someone as you can see."
"So what brings you here?" Ada faced Stella.
"I came to drop this for him as a gift to celebrate the beginning of us working together, forever and forever." Stella brought out a glass water bottle and was about to give to Kola when Ada snatched it in mid-air.
"Ada!" Kola yelled.
"This water bottle is so pretty, don't you agree?" Ada chuckled.
"Yes it is and it costs five thousand naira, can you believe it?" Stella tucked her hair under her left ear.
"Wow!" Ada exclaimed, twirling the water bottle. A jealous thought ran through her mind and she smiled devilishly towards Kola. She pretended to be clumsy and the glass water bottle slipped out of her hand.
"Oops!" Ada whispered with a gasp when the bottle shattered on the floor.
"Dear Lord." Kola groaned, placing a frustrated palm on his forehead.
"It's okay, it's fine. It was a mistake." Stella ranted but her voice oozed of undiluted anger.
"That's what happens when you touch something... that doesn't belong...to you." Ada stared intently at Stella, hoping that she got the message.
"Stella, thank you so much. But I think you should leave." Kola shot Stella a smile.
Ada rolled her eyes.
"Should I drop my phone number?" Stella stated shyly.
"Of course you....." Kola was about to bring out his phone when Ada interupted, again.
"I don't think you should." Ada said with a frown.
"Why?" Stella spoke, utterly irritated and angry.
"He's my boyfriend, my fiance to be exact." Ada smiled sweetly.
"No, she's my ex." Kola shook his head violently.
"He's still mine." Ada winked at Stella.
"I'll talk to you later in the evening." Kola held a firm smile on his face.
"No, he won't." Ada chuckled while watching Stella walk out of the office.
Kola tapped Ada's palm furiously, "What was that all about? What are you doing here?"
"Your hand is painful na." Ada pretended to be hurt.
"Ada, answer me." Kola demanded, "Now!"
"How could you watch her open the buttons of her shirt so casually and keep laughing like that?" Ada accused.
"And so? How is that your business?" Kola pretended to look for a file.
"It's my business because you know na." Ada pouted and began scratching her neck.
"Know what? That you are my ex?" Kola responded.
"No, it's because you.. love me." Ada tried to smile.
Kola laughed without humor,"I don't love you anymore, Ada. I can't keep chasing someone that... pushes me away for no reason. From what I see you...are using me to catch cruise."
"But I'm not. I was going to explain about what happened on Friday....." Ada placed her palm on Kola's.
"Explain why you kissed me back and drove me out with a gun? No need to explain, I know what you want to say." Kola chuckled and removed Ada's hand gently.
Kola tore his gaze away from Ada and focused on reading a file.
Frustrated tears stung Ada's eyes and with a determined look, she pressed further, "Do you like my shirt, Kola? It's the one you got me...for my last birthday."
"Yeah, I know. But it's ugly." Kola responded without sparing her a glance.
"It's not. You got it...for me." Ada persuaded.
"Honestly I regret buying it for you. Maybe I should have given Stella instead." Kola flipped a page.
"Why Stella? You just got to know her." Ada raised her voice.
"Yeah and I like her... already." Kola responded.
Ada knew he was lying, she was getting tired of being rejected that she couldn't think straight. She buckled up her legs, stood up and pressed her lips to Kola's forehead.
"What are you....."
Ada silenced him by placing her finger on his lips. She climbed the table like an expert pornstar. And she leant in and claimed his mouth. It was like falling into an electrified pit, Ada likened dizzily as not a single part or inch of her missed out on the high-voltage rush. She crushed her lips to keep them parted, then slid his tongue into her mouth. The sheer shock feel of that wet contact stroking across her own tongue made her shiver with pleasure, then stiffen in shock. She did it again and this time she whimpered.
Kola murmured something, then slid his arms around her so he could draw her closer to him and deepen the kiss. The next few seconds went by in a fevered hot rush. She felt plastered against his muscled torso as her own senses bloomed with an excited sparkle in response. His hand skated the length of her spine to her waist, then pressed her even closer, at the same time that he increased the pressure on her mouth, sending her neck arching backwards as he used his tongue to create a warm, thick chain reaction that poured through her entire body like silk.
Ada heard herself groan something. He muttered a very low, sensual rasp in response. She peeled off her shirt and continued kissing him.
"Ada, we can't." Kola muttered in between kisses.
"We can." Ada assured, still kissing him.
Kola pressed his hand to her breasts and squeezed. The crawling image of her father touching her breasts ignited disgust in her nerves and she tore her lips away from Kola instantly.
"I... can't...do...it." Ada shut her eyes, her chest heaving.
"Of course, I realize it now." Kola regained his composure.
Ada quickly recovered and cupped Kola's face, diving in for another kiss but Kola shifted his face and the kiss landed sloppily on his cheek.
Kola threw Ada her shirt, "Wear it and get out!"
"Kola, wait. That's what I was going to...." Ada placed her hands on his chest.
"Going to what, Ada. This isn't the first time, it's the second. I don't care anymore about your explanation. We are through, done and over. Nothing is going to make me crawl back to you. What were you expecting?" Kola began, rubbing his lips.
"That you were going to seduce me and it was going to end that way. I think it's better we stay far...far...away...from each other. We need to stop doing this. We need to move on." Kola harshly removed Ada's hands from his chest.
Ada's heart dropped, "But..you.. don't understand, I really didn't....."
"And I will never understand." Kola rose up on his feet.
"Kola, I want you...to be calm...so that....."
But her words were swallowed when Kola crushed his mouth on hers. It was slow and demanding at the same time. Ada was about to respond when Kola retreated.
"That was goodbye, Adaobi." Kola gave Ada a small smile.
Ada had never felt such chaotic emotions rush into her veins. It was a mixture of heartbreak....and heartbreak. The way Kola pronounced her full name was sweet and heart wrenching at the same time, it was like he was saying it, for the last time. Anger and clouded frustration gave her off at that moment.
"No, I won't accept that. I won't. I'm going to stay here all day till you change...your mind." Ada banged the table, obvilous that she was still clad in her bra.
"Suit yourself, clean the broken glass on the floor and lock the door when you're done." Kola replied icily and walked out of the office.
Ada felt the tears threatening to fall and she let them fall as they wished. Her eyes rained tears, she couldn't keep them from stopping. Her heart was beating so fast that she felt it could pop out of her chest. Ada's emotions were like gunpowder mixed with bullets and it went booooommm.
Ada remembered her father's words.
You'll always be mine, Ada. You'll never forget me.
"Ahhbhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!" Ada couldn't bear it anymore, she looked for a paper, placed it in her mouth and screamed as loud as she could. It was too much, she was seeing her father's face everywhere in Kola's office. She was recollecting her father's groans and strokes. She was remembering how her father would rape her till she passed out. Ada drove her fingers into her hair and bit her bottom lip, it didn't hurt when she broke up with Kola but when Kola did it, it sent an arrow crashing into her heart.
*******
Ada blew her nose and tied her hair into a bun when she entered her office. She was about to pack the files on her table and head home when a tiny voice spoke.
"Good afternoon."
Ada whipped her head around and faced a light skinned teenager, she was wearing the same uniform as Bola.
"You must be Mercy, right?" Ada tried to keep her voice at bay.
"Yes." Mercy drew a chair backwards mad she sat on it.
"Good, I've been expecting you." Ada smiled sweetly and sat down as well.
"What's your name?" Ada asked.
"It's Mercy Adelaide." Mercy responded.
"How long have you been friends with Bimbo?" Ada asked.
"Close to nine years."
"Did you know she was pregnant before she died?" Ada was eager to round up the questions and leave.
"Yes."
"And did you talk to her about it?" Ada continued.
"No."
"Okay, where do you think Bimbo would hide her secrets, if she didn't want to tell you, Sade or Bola?" Ada asked, drumming her fingers again the desk.
"Well, she...has...a diary." Mercy rubbed her neck in nervousness.
"Quite old fashioned. Have you ever seen it?" Ada remarked.
"Just once."
"Okay, where were you on Valentine's day this year?" Ada folded her arms.
"I...was at home."
"Such creative liars you three are." Ada whispered to herself.
"Okay, then who do you think....." Ada was interupted by a chime from Mercy's phone.
"Sorry, it's my mum." Mercy stated still staring at her phone.
"Okay, who do you think would have killed your friend?" Ada inquired.
"I don't know. No one knows." Mercy said, her eyes glued to her phone.
"Are you sure?" Ada asked.
"Yeah." Mercy replied, still looking at her phone.
Ada was utterly furious from heartbreak. She snatched the phone from a perplexed Mercy and she looked at the message Mercy was reading.
Sade is already in George's hospital at Lakowe, she's in room B10 but she's still unconscious. I hope you aren't telling the detective anything. Say it the way we planned it. She mustn't know anything oh. Take care- From Bola.
"G-Give me back my phone." Mercy screamed, reaching out for it.
"Sade is in the hospital, why?" Ada chuckled.
"She's sick." Mercy spoke.
"And what were you planning not to tell me?" Ada was almost laughing.
"Nothing." Mercy spat.
"Then let's go." Ada stood up and grabbed her keys.
"To where?" Mercy croaked.
"The hospital of course." Ada responded sweetly and gave Mercy back her phone She wasn't doing it to spite or annoy the girl. She needed a distraction, something to fuel her brain cells before she exploded from a tremors of anguish.
*********
"This is George's Hospital right?" Ada asked when she reached the hospital premises.
"Y-Yes ma." Mercy affirmed. She was sitting in the passenger's seat but she wasn't comfortable at all.
"You weren't calling me 'ma' in the office. Why the eye service?" Ada chuckled.
"Sorry." Mercy responded hurriedly.
"Let's go see your friend." Ada stepped out of the car and locked it when Mercy had closed the passenger door.
As they walked, Ada could hear Mercy dragging her feet, the first sign of nervousness. Ada carefully checked out each name tag on each room. When Ada sighted room B10, her heart leaped with joy. The door was slightly opened and she could hear a doctor speak. She stepped in and her heart nearly broke when she saw Sade strapped to so many tubes. Bola was sitting beside the bed, her eyes tired as she was trying so hard to listen to what the doctor was saying but it was clear that she wasn't, since she kept nodding her head like an agama lizard.
"Good afternoon." Ada greeted with her sweetest smile.
The doctor turned around and shook Ada's hand in greeting, "A good afternoon to you too and you are?"
"I am Sade's sister." Ada lied, "Elder sister."
"Ohh really, then I really have to talk to you about your sister." The doctor replied.
"Okay, sure. You can tell me." Ada replied. She could see that Bola's tired face had transformed to a shocked one and Mercy was trying to talk to Bola but Bola kept turning her face away in anger.
"You see, the drugs Sade was taking, she wasn't taking it according to how it was prescribed. She was taking it in excess to be exact which caused the side effect and it resulted into that." The doctor pointed towards am unconscious Sade.
"And I don't know what is wrong with your sister but when a medical checkup was ran through your sister, she had a high blood pressure which isn't caused by school activities which I know. I think your sister is depressed." The doctor continued.
"Okay." Ada replied.
"And it's taking a huge toll on her. It's like she's tired of living. I hope you can talk to her when she's awake." The doctor stated.
"And when would she be awake?" Ada asked.
"This evening, tommorow morning probably." The doctor shrugged.
"Thank you so much sir...for explaining to me." Ada responded.
"Sure, goodbye ma." The doctor replied and walked out of the room.
Ada chuckled and walked towards the terrified girls.
"I saw your message, Bola. It was quite precise." Ada remarked with a smile.
"Good afternoon... Ma." Bola greeted.
"You really don't have to be polite with me." Ada replied with a wave of her hand.
"So tell me, what shouldn't I know? What are you hiding from me?" Ada folded her arms.
"Nothing." They both chorused.
" I was expecting that reply but I'll tell you something today, whether you keep those dirty little secrets in your heart, I really don't care but I'm going to dig them all up whether you like it or not." Ada replied icily.
Without sparing them a glance, Ada walked out of the room with hasty steps. She was broken, angry and at the same time determined. She got to her car and opened it, she clicked her phone open and scrolled through the images on her phone, the pictures of she and Kola. She tried to delete them but she couldn't. She just kept staring at them with tear stricken eyes.
