Chapter 4: Welcome to the fold
When Dante woke up he was in hospital, again. But something was off, his arms and legs weren't responding, and they were restrained. "Um, hello?" Dante yelled. A doctor instantly ran into the room, clipboard in hand. "Oh hey mate, sorry about this, but we your Augments were malfunctioning, we had to restrain you." He said apologetically. Taking the shackles off him, and reactivating his augments. But Dante had a few questions first. "Um, my friend Yang was injured in the explosion, heavy damaged to her thighs and lower legs, is she in this hospital?" He asked, once the doctor had cleared him.
There was a sad look on his face. "Oh yeah, she just got out or surgery a few hours ago, poor kid, she's got augments now, sorry it happened to her." The doctor said apologetically. "Which room is she in?" He asked quickly. "Um she's down the hall and to the left, but she's not in great shape." He warned. But Dante was already gone. He was at her room in under ten seconds. But being respectful he did knock and waited for a weak enter. Once he was inside Dante saw Yang, and she didn't look stable. Her augments were great, top of the line in fact, but her face was stricken with tears.
"Yang?" He said slowly walking towards her. Her eyes were red from crying, and she did not look to be in a good frame of mind. "Dante, please, help me." She whimpered. He froze, this was not the Yang he was familiar with. Yang was always happy, and care free, yes she'd just lost her legs, but she now had some next generations stuff, why was she so upset? "What? Yang, are you ok?" He asked, taking a tentative step forward. She quickly looked right at him, her eyes pleading. "Wake me up, please, I have to be in a nightmare, please,,," She said, putting her forehead to her knees, rocking back and forth.
"Yang, what are you talking about, you're in a hospital, I don't understand why your so upset." He said, sitting in the chair next to the bed. "No, it can't be real, because if it is then,,," She broke off and began sobbing.
Standing up Dante Wrapped Yang in a hug. "Yang, please, you need to be strong, I know your scared, and that you feel vulnerable, but its ok, you still have friends, friends who care." He said, gently stroking the back of her head. "I can't, it's too much to take on, and it's such a huge burden." She whimpered, trembling in his arms. "Yang, you have us, and no matter what happens, we will support you." Dante promised. "Dante, with these I can never complete my dream, I'll never be eligible for the Olympics, I'll never be able to do what I've dreamt of doing ever since I was a little girl." She cried.
The realization hit Dante like a sledge hammer, of course, Augs weren't allowed into the Olympic games as contestants. "But, you could still go to the Augmented Olympics, that's still an option." He said desperately. "Felix, I won't get the recondition, if I'm an Aug, no one will care if I get gold or not." She whimpered into his chest. "There are millions of Augs, and normals, worldwide, who would disagree." Dante said, slowly. He just stood there, Yang crying in his arms. Dante stayed there for another hour, until the doctors cleared Yang to go back to regular activity, but contact a psychologist for future appointments.
Since they were only a few hours late, Dante and Yang both made their way to school. Yang had calmed down, but was still slightly upset. Both of them rocked up to the administration building, and found out where they were supposed to be. If they ran, they would make it just in time for their room allocations. So sprinting all the way over to the far left building on the college grounds. It was a six story structure, with window views, balcony's, and were very well supported.
There was a large group of about two hundred students milled around the front entrance. Dante immediately saw Rose and Taylor, so they quickly made their way over to them. Rose saw them first and quickly ran up to them. "Where the hell have you two been, we've been worried sick!?" Rose blurted, as they made their way over. "Um we ran into some complications." Dante said scratching the back of his head. "What kind of complications?" Taylor said raising her eyebrows. "We were inside the train station, when it blew up." Yang said as casually as she could. "What?" They both blurted, making various heads turn their way. "Well are you two ok." Taylor asked . "Well I found out I have military augments, and Yang, well,,," Dante found it was easier to just tap her new metal leg, making a light clang.
Both Taylor and Rose gasped. "Oh, god, Yang I'm so,," Rose began, but yang just cut her off. "Please, don't, it's the last thing I need right now." She sighed, pleading with them to stop. So they decided to discuss what they'd missed. Which was just the boring welcoming speech, and introducing the teachers. For the rest of the day, they would spend some time getting to know their new roommates. Which could surprisingly be a boy or girl.
And tomorrow after a good night's rest, they would do a quick tour of the school, and facilities, and then at the end select three different curricular clubs they would be doing for the rest of the year. Dante still on the page of how his school room mate could be a girl he'd never met before, just great. The entire group of students led by six teachers, and were allocated a floor. Dante was on the sixth floor. The very top, Yes. Rose, Taylor, and Yang were all in the same room, so knowing anyone was out of the question.
So when he was told his room was on the sixth floor, he slowly made his way up, giving his roommate time to enter their room. And When he reached the top floor, he found his room was the last door on the right. But as he approached the door, he could hear someone inside the room. Definitely a girl, and they were crying. Why couldn't he just meet a guy for once, he had no male friends. But the door was locked, so he knocked lightly on the door. "Um hello, is everything alright in there?" He called.
"Just go away!" A very upset voice called from inside the room. "Well I would like to, but this is kind of my room as well." He said quietly. Dante heard he door slowly be unlocked from the inside. And slowly waiting a few seconds he opened the door. The room was spilt into two halves. Both had a bed, wardrobe and mirror on each side, as well as a nightlight, and in at the opposite end of the room there was a door which led to the balcony. The first thing Dante noticed, was that, the right bed had someone sitting on it, and there was a small bouquet of Lilies on the floor. He couldn't see any facial features, or anything other than their legs which poked out of the cocoon of blankets, and that they were wearing bright red high heels.
Dropping his bags off at the foot of his bed. And knelt a meter away from the girl, who from the sounds of it was still crying. "Um, my names Dante, Dante Grey." He said slowly, looking up at the mass of blankets that were in front of him. "Ember Chase." A quivering voice said form somewhere inside. Dante tried to sound calm, and collected, but inside, he felt very nervous. Making first impressions were important. "Um, ok, I'm not sure if I should be asking this, but what happened?" He asked, in the nicest way possible.
"I got my heart broken." The voice said. Ok, so it was a touchy subject. "Right, damn, uh, want to talk about it?" He asked, playing his only card. "Yes." The voice sobbed.
Dante now had a full of cards again. It was time to play them carefully. "Ok, can you start by telling me who the person is?" "He's been my friend since we were four years old." The voice sobbed. "And I've always liked him, especially in the last couple of months, but no matter what I did, he never noticed me." The girl beginning to tremble. Dante gave her a moment to a gather herself. "And when he said he was leaving for Seattle, I secretly sent in an application, to the academy as well, and when I got in, I decided to surprise him, today." The girl inside the blanket began to shake with each sob.
Dante knew he probably shouldn't do anything yet. "And I'm guessing he wasn't happy to see you." Dante said quietly. The girl then began to shake violently. So this time, Dante wrapped his arms around the girl, and bedsheets, and held them as close as he could, without being creepy. "He said the only reason he came here was to get away from me, and that now I was here everything was ruined." She cried. Dante held her for a few more minutes, and then slowly let her go. He stood up, and began to walk over to his bed but stopped.
"You know Ember, if he doesn't want you, then he doesn't deserve you." Dante said, the words coming naturally too him. She her sobbing slowly stopped form underneath the blanket. "What?" Dante just smiled. "If this guy was stupid enough to turn you down, and not even give you a chance, then he's a fool." Dante said contently. "Do-do you mean that?" Ember said, sounding more even this time. "Yeah, I do." He replied, picking the Lilies off the floor. "And hey, if you want, I've got something, that may cheer you up." He said slowly, taking a knee in front of her, and holding the flowers behind his back.
"Really, what is it?" She asked, hardly a trace of sadness in her voice. "You'll have to come out and see." He said pleasantly. Slowly the blanket came away, to reveal quite possibly the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in his entire life. She had long red hair, blue eyes, smooth facial features, she was quite thin, but had some defining tone in her arms, she had a gold bracelet on each wrist, was wearing a red sleeveless dress which had some slight frills, but not over the top, and of course the red high heels.
Dante momentarily froze, he was not expecting her to look this good. But he quickly readied himself. And brought around the flowers. "For you my dear." He said, giving her a silly grin. Embers beautiful tear ridden face cracked a smile, and she began to laugh. "Really, not even your own flowers." She chuckled. "Well, hey it's the best I could do, and besides it looks like you could do with a pick me up." Dante said gently.
"Yeah, thanks, and you know what, your right, I gave him plenty of chances, and it's his loss." She said wiping away the last of her tears. "See progress." Dante said grinning. "Thanks Dante." Ember said slowly, seeming to try and get a real look at him. She stopped when she saw his augments, but continued on. "So,," She said slowly. "So,," Dante replied. "I'd like to know more about you." "Well, that's going to be complicated." Dante chuckled. "Oh, and whys that?" Ember smiled, her eyes sparkling with interest. "Well, I don't actually know much about myself."
