Ch. 8 Queen Rosalyn of the Southern Sun
It had been several weeks since Evelyn officially joined the Nott family. She had settled comfortably into her new life, growing close to her maternal uncle Darius, his daughter-in-law Matilda, and his grandson Theodore. The family had welcomed her with open arms, and the once-overwhelming world of magic was starting to feel more like home.
Evelyn spent most of her days reading with Theodore, poring over their textbooks, and excitedly discussing the spells and magical theory they would soon practice at Hogwarts. Their shared curiosity and enthusiasm made their bond grow even stronger. But while they were absorbed in their studies, another matter often crossed Evelyn's mind: the enchanted bracelet she had bought in Knockturn Alley.
One afternoon, she and Theodore sat together in the Nott family library, surrounded by towering shelves of ancient books. They were determined to uncover the history of the mysterious bracelet Evelyn now wore. After hours of searching, they finally stumbled upon a tale buried deep in the pages of an old, dusty tome.
"Here it is," Theodore said, pointing to a passage. "Queen Rosalyn of the Southern Sun."
Evelyn leaned in, her eyes scanning the words. "Queen Rosalyn, blessed by the gods with beauty, strength, and intelligence, was adored by many. But her power made her enemies, and she feared for her life. In desperation, she prayed to the gods for protection. In response, they gave her an enchanted bracelet. Those who truly loved her would wear a magical collar linked to her, bound to protect her at all costs. Their loyalty would be unwavering, and their love would grow stronger with time."
Evelyn sat back, absorbing the story. The bracelet's magic was far more complex than she had imagined. "It's like the bracelet knew who to choose," she said softly, glancing at Theodore.
While Evelyn was lost in thought, Theodore's fingers brushed against the collar around his neck. He remembered the overwhelming urge to protect her at Diagon Alley, that deep need to stay by her side. The bracelet had chosen him. But was it because of the bond they'd formed, or had it sensed something more? Did it know about the feelings that had started to blossom in him for Evelyn?
Before he could dwell on it further, Matilda's voice called from the hallway, summoning them to lunch. Theodore and Evelyn exchanged glances, closing the book as they left the library and went to the dining room.
Darius and Matilda waited at the table, smiling warmly as the children sat. The meal was lively, filled with conversation about their magical studies. But soon enough, Matilda brought up the upcoming Malfoy Summer Ball.
"Don't forget, the Ball is in just a few days," she reminded them. "I've already set aside a few outfits for you both to try on after lunch."
Evelyn beamed with excitement. She had read all about Wizarding Balls, where the most influential families gathered to socialize and discuss the future of the Wizarding World. This would be her first real opportunity to experience it firsthand.
"I can't wait to try on the dresses, Matilda!" Evelyn said, her eyes lighting up. She then turned to Theodore with a bright smile. "Will you be my plus one?"
Hiding his growing affection behind a casual grin, Theodore nodded without hesitation. "Of course, Evelyn."
Matilda and Darius exchanged amused glances, chuckling at the sight of the two. Their closeness was evident, and it warmed their hearts to see how easily Evelyn had become part of their family. But as they laughed, Darius couldn't help but notice the collar Theodore had been wearing. He had seen it several times now, but he had never questioned it. Perhaps it was just a piece of jewelry his grandson liked. Still, the older man found it curious.
"You've been wearing that collar often, Theodore," Darius remarked, his tone light. "Is it some new Wizarding trend I've missed out on?"
Theodore hesitated, momentarily caught off guard, but quickly masked it with a nonchalant shrug. "Just something I picked up. It felt... right."
Evelyn glanced at Theodore, feeling the weight of Darius's words. She and Theodore knew the truth behind the collar, but for now, she kept silent, grateful that they and the bracelet understood its significance.
As the conversation shifted back to the Ball and the excitement of choosing their outfits, Evelyn's mind wandered back to the legend of Queen Rosalyn. The enchanted bracelet had given her more than protection; it had unknowingly bound her to Theodore in ways neither fully understood yet.
Evelyn stood in her bedroom, soft golden light filtering through the large, arched windows. Matilda Nott bustled about, helping Evelyn try on various gowns for the upcoming Malfoy Summer Ball. The air was filled with anticipation as they prepared for one of the year's most prestigious events.
Matilda carefully adjusted the deep green silk of the current gown Evelyn was trying on, her eyes bright with approval. "This one suits you, dear. It brings out the color of your eyes and compliments your complexion beautifully," she said, giving Evelyn an encouraging smile.
Evelyn twirled in front of the mirror, admiring how the dress swayed with her movements. She had worn something like this before—luxurious, formal attire meant for the highest of society in the Muggle world, and now she'll be wearing something similar in the Wizarding world.
"Thank you, Matilda," Evelyn said softly, gazing at the older woman. "I'm curious... which Wizarding families will be attending?"
Matilda smiled knowingly, sensing Evelyn's curiosity about the world she was beginning to understand. "Oh, the Malfoy Summer Ball is quite the affair. Only the most influential and respected Pureblood families are invited. It's a social event where individuals can network and form alliances. You'll meet many people that evening."
She began listing the names of the families, her tone light but respectful. "For instance, the Bulstrodes will be there. Zachary Bulstrode is a well-known Wizarding attorney, and his wife Gretchen is a Lady of high standing. Their daughter, Milicent, is the family's heiress."
Evelyn hummed thoughtfully, trying to imagine the Bulstrodes. "Milicent... I wonder what she's like."
"She's... formidable," Matilda replied with a wry smile. "Then there's the Carrow family. Amycus Carrow is the family's Lord, and his eldest daughter, Flora, is the heiress. He has a second daughter named Hestia. And a younger sister named Alecto. They're a traditional family, very set in their ways."
Evelyn nodded, absorbing the information. She had heard of the Carrows in some books she had read, and their reputation preceded them.
Matilda continued, naming each family with care. "The Crouch family is also very influential. Bartemius Crouch Sr. holds a high-ranking position at the Ministry of Magic. The Flint family is quite involved in Quidditch, with Alexander Flint as the head coach of Britain's team for the Quidditch World Cup. His son, Marcus, a few years older than you and Theodore, will also be there."
Evelyn's mind swirled with the names and titles. She was beginning to see just how interconnected the Wizarding world was. "The Fudge family... Cornelius is the new Minister of Magic, right?" she asked, recalling something she had read recently.
"Yes, exactly," Matilda confirmed. "Cornelius Fudge has just been appointed. His wife Abigail and his nephew Rufus will likely attend as well. Then there's the Greengrass family. Zephyr Greengrass is the school governor at Hogwarts, and his eldest daughter, Daphne, will be attending Hogwarts this year with you and Theodore. He also has a second daughter named Astoria, who is beautiful yet delicate due to being born with a sickly disease."
"The Malfoys, of course," Matilda said, her eyes flickering with a slight smile as she mentioned their hosts. "Lucius Malfoy holds considerable power at the Ministry, and Narcissa is the event's hostess. Draco, their heir, will be there, along with Lucius' father, Abraxas."
Evelyn nodded. She was already familiar with Draco, having spent time with him in Diagon Alley. But she wasn't sure what to expect from the other families.
Matilda went on to mention more. "The Parkinson family will be there—Aaron Parkinson, his wife Dahlia, and their daughter, Pansy. The Rowles, with Thorfinn Rowle and his younger sister Euphemia, are another Pureblood family of significance. And the Yaxleys—Corban Yaxley will certainly make an appearance."
As Matilda listed the last name, Evelyn perked up. "The Zabinis—Blaise Zabini is the heir, right?"
"Yes, Blaise and his mother, Alessandra Zabini, one of the most mysterious women in our world," Matilda added, a note of intrigue in her voice. "She has been widowed several times, yet remains one of the most sought-after women in Wizarding society."
Evelyn thought about it for a moment. "It sounds like there will be quite a few powerful people there," she mused, a mix of excitement and nervousness bubbling within her.
"Indeed," Matilda replied, admiring Evelyn in the gown. "But don't worry, my dear. You'll do wonderfully. Everyone will want to meet the new Head Lady of the Nott family. And you'll have Theodore by your side."
Evelyn smiled at that, finding comfort in having Theodore with her. "I'll need his company," she said, her tone light.
Matilda laughed softly, her eyes twinkling. "Of course, you will. Now, let's try the next dress. We need to find you something that makes a lasting impression."
Meanwhile, across the house, Darius was with Theodore, standing in front of a mirror in his bedroom, dressed in formal robes. Darius adjusted the lapel of his grandson's outfit, giving him a critical but approving look.
"You look quite dashing, Theodore," Darius remarked, stepping back to assess. "This Ball will be important for you as well. You'll need to represent the Nott family with pride."
Theodore glanced in the mirror, feeling slightly out of place in such formal attire. But he knew this was part of the Pureblood world—appearances and reputation mattered greatly.
"I know, Grandfather," he replied, his voice calm but with an edge of nerves. "I just hope it goes well."
Darius smiled. "It will. And you'll have Evelyn with you. She's fitting into the family more and more each day."
Theodore's expression softened at the mention of Evelyn. "Yeah... she's something special."
Darius didn't miss the look on his grandson's face. "She is. And you two have developed a close bond. You'll both make the Nott family proud at the Malfoy Ball."
As Theodore adjusted his collar in the mirror, he couldn't help but wonder if the bracelet had chosen him for a reason beyond just protection. He had always felt the need to protect Evelyn, but now, there was something more—an unspoken connection between them that grew stronger with each passing day.
He just hoped that whatever the future held, they would face it together.
