Thirteen
There are references to the movie in this chapter. But they're minor because I honestly don't remember much of the movie since I watched it months ago and have the memory of a boiled egg. So don't worry about them okay?
That night, Kirishima couldn't sleep for the first time since he started pretending to date Bakugou.
The blond slept with his back to the redhead, unlike the other nights when they would tangle themselves around each other, no part untouched. They hadn't spoken since they left the wedding either. Kirishima had showered, finding dinner on the table and Bakugou asleep in bed when he got out.
He spent some time hanging out on the couch, deeming eight twenty three too early to be going to sleep, but by nine, he was tucking himself into bed, lying on his back and staring at the ceiling.
He had to leave tomorrow, he decided. He had to rip the bandaid off quick. It had been stuck there too long to begin with.
Besides, Taishiro and Amajiki had gone home ages ago and Kirishima figured he might as well be useful there instead of fooling around with something this dangerous.
It was maybe three in the morning when Kirishima finally found himself drifting off.
But that little bit of sleep was soon interrupted by a familiar popping.
Bakugou's quirk...
Kirishima sat upright, eyes quickly adjusting to the dark. Bakugou was still sleeping, but his breathing was raspy and much too quick.
Kirishima has seen this before, back in first year after the Kamino Ward incident.
He didn't think Bakugou HAD nightmares anymore.
But at least Kiri knew how to deal with them.
"Katsuki, wake up." He nudged the blond forcefully.
Bakugou shot upright, breathing heavily. He was sweating all over. Kirishima could smell that sweet scent all over him.
"You're okay." He pulled Bakugou into his arms, stroking his back and head in a steady rhythm. "I'm right here."
Bakugou started crying, something he had never done around Kirishima before.
Nightmares were easy, but crying was a whole different playing field.
"Woah, hey, it's alright. You're safe. I'm not going anywhere."
Bakugou buried his face in Kirishima's neck, his body shaking violently. Kiri did his best to comfort his friend, but he was scared.
"How are you feeling?" He asked, knowing the question was stupid. Bakugou was clearly panicked.
"M-mom..." He choked.
"Mom?"
Why was he bringing up his mother now?
He didn't reply with anything more than harsher tears.
"Everything is okay. Just breathe. Take some deep breaths."
And just like that, he was. He was breathing deeply, calming down enough to talk.
He didn't pull away, though. If anything, he held on tighter.
"Mom sweats nitroglycerin."
"Yeah. You do too."
"It killed her."
Kirishima didn't know what to say to that. He let Bakugou continue at his own pace.
"She sweats nitroglycerin. Which explodes. And there was fire. In the accident." His sentences were broken and his voice cracked on every few words.
Kirishima started to rock him, swaying the pair of them back and forth at a soothing pace.
"I sweat nitroglycerin."
"Oh."
He must be worried that the same thing would happen to him as his mother. His nightmare must have been about that.
"I'm scared, Eijirou."
"Don't be. You're strong. I'm sure you won't catch on fire."
"Todoroki lit me on fire once...exploded me...remember that?"
"Oh yeah..." I Island. "But that wasn't bad. You didn't get hurt."
"But I expected it."
"Katsuki, you're strong. You're the strongest person I've ever met. Nothing bad like that will happen to you. I promise."
Bakugou took a deep breath, holding onto Kirishima even tighter. "I love you."
"I love you, too." Kirishima whispered. "Try to get some sleep."
"You're not gonna leave me, are you?"
"What?" Kirishima swallowed. "Of course not." He lied. "What makes you think that?"
"I just feel it. You're distant." Bakugou held onto Kirishima even tighter. "I don't want you to go."
"I told you. I'm gonna stay with you until your memory comes back."
"And then what?" Bakugou asked. "You're just gonna leave, aren't you."
"I'm not." Kirishima lied. "I'm gonna stay with you forever."
Bakugou pulled himself away, giving Kirishima a long look. He finally sighed and curled back up in his spot on the bed.
Kirishima swallowed.
He had so many promises to break in the morning.
He was only staying until morning.
