Chapter 16
Sora pulled at the sleeves of her sweater, drowning her hands in it, trying to fight the cold as she leaned against the balcony railing. Ominous black clouds had made the midnight sky darker; only the cracks of lightning breaking through with the booming thunder quickly following behind. The pleasant drizzle had been drowned away in the sudden downpour that made Sora back away from the balcony.
The silence brought by the balcony door sliding close was a sudden relief against the howling of the wind and the rain. But the relief lasted for a few seconds before incessant knocking echoed in the apartment. Sora instinctively looked at her wrist and muttered to herself about the late hour and wondered which neighbour could be possibly bothering her. The teenager from the floor above? Way past his bedtime. The next-door neighbour? He hasn't been home all week, so probably out for business. With each step, Sora eliminated a possibility and soon she didn't have any more neighbours left to cross off.
Sora looked back at her phone on the coffee table, wondering if it could be Sunhee, but the knocking brought her attention back to the door. She reached the door and checked the peephole to see only a drenched head looking down at a phone, with one hand raised to knock again.
Sora stared back at the visitor confused and her eyebrows up in question without realising that he couldn't see her. Tugging at her clothes and tucking her hair behind her ears was an instinct that Sora didn't question at the time because one should always look presentable when someone comes visiting. The visitor being Park Jimin had nothing to do with whatsoever. Truly.
She unlocked the door, pulled the shivering cold mass into the apartment and quickly closed the door, worried that someone might have recognised him.
"Jimin...?"
But before he could answer, she watched his little nose twitch and his eyes flutter before he let out a sneeze that shook him up and also shook off some of the water he had collected in his hair.
"Stay!"
Sora rushed to her room and came back with two big towels and handed it to him. He tried to thank her as another sneeze took away his words. Jimin watched as she went back to what looked like her room and didn't come back for a couple of minutes. He simply stood there, one hand absently rubbing his hair dry, wondering yet again if he should have come here.
Jimin looked down to see that he had made a little puddle right in the middle of Sora's living room and internally groaned about the trouble he was putting her through.
"I've laid down some clothes for you and you can take a shower too if you want. Everything you need should be in there but call me if you need anything." Sora said as she walked back to him, her hands nervously twitching behind her back.
She watched him hesitate but before he could say anything, she gently nudged him towards her room and closed the door behind her and leaned against it. She let out the breath she had seemed to be holding in ever since she had opened the door to him.
On the other side of the door, Jimin was still thinking about apologizing for the clear intrusion and leaving. His hand froze on the doorknob when he heard Sora's voice asking if he needed anything? He quickly shook his head only to realize that she couldn't see him. He quickly told her that he was fine. He took a step back from the door and decided to take a quick shower before creating another puddle in Sora's room.
Meanwhile, Sora had put on a pot of water for ramen and had also put on a kettle of coffee. She stood at the stove, watching the water boil and wondering what on earth had brought him here. Like the neighbours, she kept crossing out possibilities until she felt a gentle tap on her shoulder. She immediately jerked out of her thoughts and looked to her left to find Jimin standing there, running his fingers through his wet blonde hair and slightly tugging at the sweater he was wearing. The jeans were a perfect fit just like she had hoped. However, his bunched up eyebrows showed that he was uncomfortable about something.
"Is everything all right? Do you need anything? I have a hairdryer in case you want to dry your hair."
"No, no. I'll just let it be. Thanks, um... I am really sorry about intruding like this. It wasn't raining when I left the dorm and then I had to switch cabs because it broke down and then... let's just say it has been a journey reaching you."
Something in her stomach went whoosh and she doesn't know if it was the fact that Jimin was here, in her apartment, something that shouldn't have ever happened and if her boss came to know of it, she would have to pay hell for it or it was the man himself, looking so soft in the fuzzy sweater.
"Why don't you sit down and I'll bring the ramen?" Sora gave him a tentative smile while nodding towards the couch in the living room.
Jimin nodded, still feeling the distance Sora was keeping from him. He started to move towards the table but also took a hesitant step back. Sora saw it all from the corner of her eye while pretending to watch the ramen cook and wondered what was making him so uncomfortable.
"Oh and thanks for the clothes, I thought you would have laid out something of yours and I wasn't sure it would fit me but your...b-brother seems to be the same size as me." Jimin completed slowly and stared at Sora, slightly hopeful.
"Those aren't my brother's clothes..."
And, all his hopes were shot down. It would explain Sora pulling back from their almost kiss on her birthday and being a little distant ever since.
It wasn't the fact that she wasn't sure of her feelings for him.
It was the fact that she had none.
Sora watched him as his frown deepened, his hand clutching at the hem of the sweater and realized what was bothering him.
"Oh!" She watched Jimin give her a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "I hope your boyfriend doesn't mind me borrowing his clothes..."
She really shouldn't. Heck, it would make things so much more complicated for her. She tried convincing herself. Another white lie added on wouldn't really make a difference in the grand scheme of things.
But she felt that this lie would probably cut a little deeper than the rest. So she gave him the truth.
"We can worry about that when I actually get a boyfriend."
Jimin immediately looked at her, something he had been avoiding since he had come out of her room. He gave her a sheepish smile, cheeks slightly red as he tried to hide his joy.
Just this one time she promised herself. Not that it would matter in the end.
No one would remember this one truth of hers.
All her lies are what will be remembered.
All her lies are what he will have known.

A/N: It's been a while but it's here. One really long chapter to make up for the inactivity :P
And this story might be getting out of hand like my stories usually do. Let's see where this goes. :P
