Chapter 7
With Georgia getting overly excited and then going on an emotional low because of wedding anxiety Wendy had her hands full. She had to threaten her that she would not come up and participate in the wedding if she did not take a chill pill and relax. Her mother and aunt were still coaxing her to relax when she got off the phone.
The fact that she had also spent the majority of the night chatting away with Leela and downing a full bottle of red wine was also not a plus in the day's events. Her head was pounding and she too had her anxieties to deal with.
Every time the office door opened her heart did a series of crazy flips in the fear that some deranged conquest of Deacon would barge in to defend their territory, or even worse his father would return to demand that she hightailed herself out of his son's life and stop messing with his plans.
It did not offer any solace that it was just Elen coming in to relay some matter or hand over various tasks she had finished, or that it was not Deacon to help fend off any of the dragons that threatened to destroy her fairy tale world as Leela had called it last night in one aspect of their discussion.
It was not easy dealing with her inquisitive co-workers either, she knew she was very much the topic of everyone's conversation. Her mind was reeling with what she figured they were busy chatting about.
Just when she had done her best to stay locked away in her office and out of their way she let herself leave for the canteen only to encounter two overly excited and awestruck girls from Accounts.
They were much to her amazement quick to delve into the how and the when of her relationship with Mr. Hotty Deacon Ffrench.
She almost laughed when the nerdier of the two said in dismay. "I don't think I could handle all the lovers, but you can knock them out of his mind as you sure are an attractive and classy woman."
The other nodded in total agreement and then giggled. "And you sure knock them out as you are going to marry him. I bet they surely are jealous of you. I know I am."
"Jess!" the taller of the two chastised and her friend's chubby face flushed with embarrassment.
With a mumbled excuse she walked away before the conversation went any further and rushed back to her office where she willed the time to speed on by.
She should go down to the board room with the necessary papers that Deacon had requested and see to it as well that all was in place before the attendees of the meeting arrived.
She needed to have something to do as she was going crazy with all sorts of scenarios that could unfold when she took Deacon to her family home. To distract herself she retrieved the email that was sent to her by Deacon this morning and scanned through it.
She already had in place the things that he instructed and was closing the message when Evelyn who was not at work yesterday but very much on par with all the news walked into the office pulled a chair from in front of Deacon's desk and leaned towards her in a conspiracy pose after she sat.
"So all along you were having an office romance with our boss," she said with a delightful giggle. "I saw something at the Christmas Party but was not sure, but here we are you hitting some renowned and famous women off Deacon's pedestal and taking full perch."
"Evelyn," Wendy said with a note of irritation, "Whatever Mr. Ffrench and I have going on is nobody's damn business and more so not yours."
This did not deter her from continuing, "So tell me were you two together when he took Sandy Gomez to the Black and White Charity Gala on New Year's Eve?"
She did not wait for an answer but rushed on her piercing blue eyes dancing with the delight of all the juicy tidbits that she could bring to light.
"With that flimsy ensemble of a dress and the way she was all over him am sure she did not just accompany him..."
The implication was clear and Wendy could see all the other loopholes looming up to just further sink her into this charade she pulled herself into.
In all the years she had endured her mother's ribbing, her various attempts to hook her up with any eligible sons of her friends, and a few online dating sites thrown into the mix she had not faltered.
But back then her mother had not been a few steps from death's door and was afraid she would pass before she saw her daughter truly happy.
"Listen to me your dubious assumption about what I have or do not have with Mr. Ffr---Deacon is none of your business," Wendy snapped getting up from her chair to gather the things she would need to take to the boardroom.
"Ohhh, so now that you've claimed the catch you're forgetting that you're just a lowly employee just like me." Eyes of blue ice regard her coldly as she too rises.
"Your job here is not to go about ferreting in other people's affairs. I wish you would comprehend that before it works against you."
"To think that I thought you different," she returned. "I would not get too high and mighty if I were you, as you can easily be replaced. We both know it's something Mr. Ffrench does well when it comes to his women."
"I am different Evelyn," Wendy replied her words softly spoken but very much harsh.
Eyes of brown and blue stared into the other in a hard clash.
"I am not a leech who goes about making friends so that I can suck from them any details I can use to my manipulative advantage."
Evelyn's blue eyes became colder but she remained silent as Wendy spoke her voice still soft as her biting words filled the office.
"We both know you did not come here to congratulate me just like you did not have my best interest at heart when you posted that pic of Mr. French and me."
Wendy was not surprised to see Evelyn's cold eyes dart away from her and her hearty stance deflate as Deacon came into the office.
In a well-cut chocolate brown pants suit and her charming oval face framed by a high and low blunt cut bob, she was an attractive and appealing woman but Evelyn's true nature was the total opposite of what she reflected on the outside.
"If you'll excuse me Evelyn I have work to do."
In the process of dismissing Evelyn Deacon further entered the office and walked up to Wendy. He ignored the woman who tried to look work-poised and efficient and came to stand by her, he placed a soft warm kiss on her startled lips.
"You'll have to sit in for Elen babe, she has a family emergency and cannot be at the meeting and I so want to stare at you as I pretend to listen to what my board members have to say knowing I rescheduled this meeting so I can run off with you."
Why the hell did her face and body feel like it was set ablaze? Being close to him and inhaling that sweet intoxicating scent of him mixed with his musky, spicy cologne was playing havoc with her composure.
It took all she had to smile up at him and speak with all the seductive implications that her response would require.
With a step closer, she pressed her body into his and said. "Am so looking forward to watching you too especially as I have been denied that opportunity all morning."
At least she knew she had what it took to convince those who needed convincing she was hot and heavy in lustful need for her fiancé.
He grinned at her took her hand and led her to the door that leads into the lounge much to her puzzlement.
"This is not the way to the boardroom," she voiced looking quizzically at him.
"I know," was all he said before the door closed firmly behind them leaving a gaping Evelyn.
Wendy would have been satisfied if she had seen the look of shocking dismay on Evelyn's face as she stood staring at the closed door. However, the jealousy that raged in her not so much.
It was all well when she believed Wendy would have been another love 'em and leave 'em. It took her a good five minutes before she could compose herself and leave for her office feeling very bitter.
