WHITE FLAG
chapter twenty-eight : only one choice
{ season two - episode ten }
STARING AT THE sky with admiration, Kloe watched carefully as the clouds moved slowly. There were only a few clouds, but mostly it was a blue sky. It made the youngest Schmidt smile every time. She had no idea why, but she enjoyed it.
A few footsteps approached her on the porch, breaking her eyes away from the sky and toward the new presence. "Is Beth okay?" Kloe asked with sympathy.
"No. She wants to go tonight," Maggie answered, exhaling a shaky breath, "and she wants me to go with her." She crouched down beside Kloe, bringing her knees to her chest.
"I'm sorry," Kloe said with sadness, wrapping her arm around Maggie's shoulder. Maggie rested her head on Kloe's shoulder, letting herself shut her eyes to rest.
"Thank you for everything," Maggie muttered out, peacefully resting as her head was still set on the Schmidt girl's shoulder. "You're the first real friend I've had in a while."
"That's what friends are for," Kloe smiled. "You know, I had two friends that I was super close to before the apocalypse happened," she said, catching Maggie's attention. "Their names were Ryan and Norah. They were always there for me when I needed them, and I was always there when they needed me. Norah and I have been friends since we were five, but Ryan had only been friends with us since seventh grade when he was getting apples thrown at his head by a group of assholes."
The two young adults shared a chuckle. They both loved it when they shared their history together. Every sentence was increasing their friendship with every word that slides off of their tongues.
"If they were still here, they would've loved to be friends with you," Kloe said, looking down at her hands that were placed nicely in her lap while Maggie's head still rested on her shoulder.
"I wish I got to know them, they sound nice," Maggie lifted her head and looked across at her friend, smiling at her. Kloe returned the smile, beginning to think of all the happy memories with her old friends. She would do anything to see them again, but fate had other plans for them.
It made Kloe sad when she thought about it. The two probably had so much more to experience, despite the dead trying to eat them. Even though Kloe was living in the fatal world with another group and possibly more people, she was still having fun at times.
And she was happy. If the apocalypse never began, she might not have been with Glenn. She would be still faking her relationship with Ryan, thinking that real relationships were a waste of space and unnecessary.
She thought that until she met Glenn. At first, she kept denying the fact that she felt differently to everyone else. Neither of them knew what it was, even Glenn. He hadn't liked anyone the way he liked Kloe.
At first, when she began developing those unfamiliar feelings towards him, she kept denying it. She was scared to let herself love someone that deeply. She was scared to be loved by someone else that deeply too. Overall, she was terrified of it.
Her dreams were to live her life, do whatever she wanted. But they were different now. A lot different. She had allowed herself to be loved, and she allowed herself to love.
She raised her white flag to be with Glenn Rhee.
...
"So, what you're saying is you went through a phase where you just sleep with loads of people?" Kloe asked her friend as they both made their way back to the Greene house to check on Maggie's younger sister, Beth.
They decided to go on a walk around the field, and Kloe caught a glance of Andrea and Lori together, making her confused on who was keeping an eye on Beth.
"Yeah, basically," Maggie answered, staring down at her boots with a grin. "Although I stopped when Beth threw my birth control pills away. I figured that was a sign to stop," she laughed.
"Speaking of, who's looking after Beth right now?" Kloe questioned, darting her eyes across everyone around the area, noticing no one was inside. "Everyone's outside."
"Oh, uh, Andrea's keeping an eye," she answered, inching closer to her house by the second.
"Uh, no, Andrea's over there," Kloe pointed over to the RV where she spotted Andrea, Dale and Glenn talking to each other. Lori was gone, but they guessed she went inside the house, but maybe she thought that the two girls were in there with Beth.
The look of horror etched on the girl's face at the thought of her sister being left alone, and before Kloe knew it, Maggie sprinted toward the house. Kloe followed instantly, knowing how much Maggie cared for her sister and didn't want more arguments to occur.
"Beth?!" Maggie yelled, pulling open the door to the house as she stood still at the front of the house, listening out for her younger sister. Kloe stopped by Maggie's side, panting as she darted her eyes around, searching for the blonde Greene.
"Beth?" Kloe called out, hoping to hear the young Greene's response, but there was nothing. Maggie instantaneously began pacing toward the room where her younger sister was kept while she got better.
The two young adults stopped in front of the room, realizing the entrance to it was wide open. Maggie definitely made sure she closed the door before she left. She stepped inside, looking around the room with a puzzled expression.
"Beth?" she called out in a lower tone. She was scared that she had done something, but instead she was out of sight. Kloe stepped inside the room, examining the room in hope to spot the young teenage girl.
The young adults' attention got brought to another door that was in the room, the bathroom door. There were faint sobs coming from the inside, making both Maggie's and Kloe's expressions grow worried.
They both stepped toward the door. "Beth?" Maggie called out, coming to a quick stop along with Kloe after the two heard glass shattering. "Beth?!" Maggie repeated again, beginning to pound on the door as she twisted the door knob, but unfortunately it was locked.
"Beth, come on! Open the door!" Kloe frantically yelled, pounding on the door alongside Maggie who was still twisting the locked door knob. "Beth!"
Lori, who heard the young women's yells, opened the door and stared at them with confusion, "Maggie? Kloe?"
They both tilted their heads to the side in unison, catching Lori's gaze. "She's in there. I heard glass," Maggie said, going back to twisting the door knob with fear of her younger sister.
In an instant, Lori joined Maggie and Kloe's side and pressed her head against the dark wooden door and listened inside, "Beth, you all right?"
"Don't do this, Beth. Don't do this," Maggie pleaded, her voice growing shaky. Kloe pounded her fist against the door, although she knew it wouldn't help. "Open up, please," Maggie said once more before stepping away from the door and stepping over to a dresser, "God, I left her with Andrea."
Maggie clattered through the things that were scattered across the dresser in hope to find the key to the door. "Where's the key?" Lori questioned, watching Maggie as she opened the drawers and rumbled through them.
"I don't know," she replied and she trod back over to the wooden door and set her head near the crack of the door so her sister could hear her. "Beth, honey, please open the door. I'm not mad. I'm not mad, Beth."
"Maggie, Kloe," Lori stated, signaling the two to step back. "Hang on." The woman had a fire poker in her grip and once the two young women stepped back, she pushed the poker through the creak of the door and began pushing with force.
The door creaked open and the poker clattered. Once the door opened wide enough, the three women spotted the sobbing teenage blonde girl. She turned around to face them, and she was holding onto her wrist, that was covered in her own blood, tightly.
Behind her was a mirror that was now broken and was left with only a few shards. Beth stared at her older sister with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry," she shakily said.
Maggie looked at her sister with pity and stepped closer to her, quickly placing her hand over her sister's sliced wrist and kissed the side of her head. "Okay. It's okay," she said, tears filling her own eyes as she began to rush her sister to her father.
Once the Greene sisters left the room, Kloe and Lori shared a glance with each other. "Andrea let her do that?" Kloe asked, earning a nod from Lori, making her scoff.
...
Kloe stood close by the window, a noticeable frown growing on her face when she spotted the blonde woman who had abandoned Beth run toward the house. "Alert, alert. Incoming," she muttered, loud enough for the other two women in the room who were standing outside the room where Beth was getting her wrist stitched by her father.
Maggie grunted in response, quickly walking toward the entrance to the house, Lori on her heels. Without hesitation, Kloe departed from the window and followed the two women.
The eldest Greene daughter slammed open the door, harshly stepping down the steps and stopping at the last one. Kloe and Lori stepped onto the porch, the Grimes woman gently closing the door behind her and Kloe taking a few steps down the porch steps, coming to a quick stop a step-higher than Maggie.
"Why were you out here?" Maggie questioned with harshness present in her tone. She stared at the blonde woman with deeply furrowed eyebrows. Kloe couldn't blame Maggie for the anger that was coursing through her. Andrea allowed the teen to do something that wasn't an option for anyone. And that teen just so happened to be Maggie's younger sister.
"I heard, is she alright?" Andrea questioned, panting heavily. Kloe glared across at the blonde woman. She was acting as if she had done nothing wrong, and was completely ignoring the situation.
"She would be if you had stayed with her. Why were you out here?" Maggie repeated, more firmly. Lori rubbed away a drop of sweat that snaked down her cheek and placed a hand on her hip.
"How bad is she?" Andrea asked, still ignoring the Greene woman, making both her and Kloe get more irritated.
"It wasn't deep," Lori replied, placing both hands on her hips as she stared down at her boots.
Andrea let out a heavy breath, a look of a mix of happiness and relief in her expression,."She wants to live," she paused for a moment, letting out another loud breath, "She made her decision."
"She tried to kill herself," Maggie's voice raised, staring at Andrea with pure disbelief. As much as Kloe knew that Andrea was in the wrong for the thing she did, she knew deep down that she was right.
"No, she didn't."
"My father is stitching her wrist right now," Maggie snapped. Kloe felt like saying something, but she knew it wasn't her place to say anything. She had only been Maggie's close friend, she wasn't Beth's sister. She couldn't say anything, as much as she wanted to, she just couldn't.
"She'll live," Andrea stated softly, slightly nodding her head before moving to the side to walk up the porch steps to visit the teenage girl who had been willing to take her own life earlier that day.
"Stay away from her," Maggie growled, blocking the woman from walking up the steps. The look in Maggie's eyes was a mix of anger, sadness, and betrayal of some sort. Maggie had trusted Andrea to keep an eye on her younger sister while she had a break, and Andrea lied through her teeth, making Maggie believe her. "From both of us. Don't you dare step foot inside this house again."
Andrea slowly stepped back, shock in her eyes. She let out a quiet breath as her heart sank into her stomach. She flicked her eyes over Lori and Kloe, the two of them having stoic expressions. She looked back at Maggie and nodded her head in understanding before walking away, tears springing to her eyes.
Maggie exhaled, spinning around and stepping back up the steps, Kloe following her. Before they could go back inside, Lori put her hand out in front of them, making them turn to look at her. "I'm not going to say she was right, but Beth has made her choice. She wants to live and now she knows it. And sometimes you have to cross the line."
Maggie stared at the woman, turning her head to the side to face her friend who only nodded slowly. She turned back to Lori, humming in response as she opened the door to her house and walked in.
...
"Rick and Shane are back," Zayn entered the room where Hershel, Maggie, Kloe and Beth were. Beth had just gotten her wrist stitched and was getting a bandage wrapped around it. Their attention got brought to the Schmidt man, making everyone except Beth stand up from their seats.
"I was about to complain about how long they took, but I should be grateful that it isn't like the day they were out all freaking night," Kloe said, chuckling slightly as Maggie did the same.
"Daddy, stay here," Maggie stated to her father, "I'll get Rick to come in here and see you." Hershel nodded at his eldest daughter, setting himself back in his seat and setting his attention to his youngest daughter's wrist.
The two young women followed Zayn out of the room and to the front of the house, where Kloe could hear car doors slam shut. The three exited the house, spotting Rick and Shane walking to the trunk of the car.
Maggie closed the door behind her and briefly eyed Andrea in the corner of her eye before placing her attention back onto the former police officers. Kloe turned her head to the side to face her friend, catching her attention.
Kloe smiled supportively, getting it in return from the Greene woman. The two faced Rick and Shane, who were opening the trunk to their car. Puzzled looks spread across everyone's faces, confusion as to why they were opening the trunk.
That's when the two men gripped onto another person. The person being Randall, who had a blindfold over his eyes and tape wrapped around his mouth, hands and feet. Rick and Shane's purpose for going out was to drop the man off, but instead they came back with him.
"Why the hell is he back?" Daryl asked gruffly, promptly stepping open to the trunk and staring down at the young man who was now getting dragged across the grass by Rick.
"We're gonna put him in the shed," he answered, getting followed by practically everyone.
"No, Rick. Why is he back?" Zayn then asked, joining his sister's side. "Wasn't the whole plan to drop him off and let him live how he chooses to?"
"He knows about the farm," Rick stated, grunting slightly as he continued to drag Randall across the grass as he got closer to the shed. Kloe's eyebrows furrowed, along with everybody else's. The man was blindfolded the whole time on the way back from town, how did he know? "He said he knew Maggie."
The mentioned woman's eyebrows deepened as she stared at the people who gave her looks. "I've never seen him in my life. I don't know how he knows me."
"He said you didn't know him, he said he saw you in school," Rick added, making Maggie form an 'o' shape with her lips.
"Rick," Shane called out, who had gone through some luggage in the RV and jogged over to the group. He tossed over a padlock to his best friend, who caught it in one hand. "He's gonna stay put in there for now," Shane said, rushing over to the wooden door and pulling it open.
Rick nodded his head, stepping inside and throwing Randall harshly onto the floor. The young man let out a little yell as he hit the ground, hissing from the pain in his leg. Isabelle, who was taking a walk around the field, appeared and stood close to Kloe's side.
"Put him against the bench," Rick ordered Shane and Daryl, who both acknowledged by rushing over to the young man and pushing him against the the bench. "You're gonna stay out here," he muttered, pulling out handcuffs from his belt and swiftly wrapping them around the young man's wrists.
Over half of the group were still standing outside, just listening in since the shed had gaps in between the wooden planks. Rick stood up, staring down harshly at the young man before stepping outside to the rest of the group.
Everyone stared at the man, unknowing on what to say. "We will deal with him tomorrow, no one has to worry," he said softly, instantly making people's emotions soften about the situation.
"Rick," Maggie began, catching the Grimes man's attention, "I told my father that you would go in and talk to him. You should go do that."
The man nodded in response, walking through the small crowd and made his way over to the Greene family house. Everyone shared a few glances with each other. A young man that had tried to shoot Rick, Hershel and Glenn was still living in the same property as them and they were still slightly wary about it all.
Isabelle began to go deep into her thoughts, thinking about what the man had just said beforehand. They would deal with him the next day... What was that supposed to mean? Isabelle, who sadly only thought the worse, began to worry about what the man would do to the young man the next day.
The Marshel teen didn't want anything bad to happen to anyone. The man was only young and he most likely had more to live for if the group could take him in and teach him how to not kill anyone without knowing who they are.
Breaking out of her thoughts, the teen girl glanced up at everyone, who were going their own ways, going back to what they were previously doing. She searched for Kloe, and she quickly spotted her with Maggie, both walking back to check on Beth.
She quickly jogged over to the two young women, wanting to speak with Kloe. "Can I talk with you?" she asked as she got closer to the Schmidt woman, who instantly nodded and signaled Maggie to go to the house without her.
"What's wrong?" Kloe asked, realizing the concerned look on Isabelle's face.
"You don't think Rick is gonna kill Randall, do you?" Isabelle rushed her words without hesitation in a hushed tone. Kloe's eyebrows raised with shock at the sudden question. She wasn't expecting anything like that.
Kloe shrugged, "I'm not sure. Why?"
Isabelle pursed her lips, briefly staring down at the ground before looking back up at Kloe. "I don't think killing him is the right thing," she admitted honestly. "No one deserves death as a punishment. They should only deserve that if they truly did something wrong. Yes, Randall shot at a few of our people, but he didn't do anything, he only hurt himself in return."
Kloe listened to the teenage girl carefully. In all honesty, Kloe didn't think killing the man was the right option, but who was she to stop Rick? No matter how hard she possibly tried, she would never be able to change his mind. After all, he was a police man before the apocalypse began.
"Look, we don't know for sure if that's what Rick wants to do. But we'll see what we can do if he does want that, okay?" Kloe assured, smiling at the teenage girl. Isabelle softly smiled in return, nodding her head slowly. "I'm gonna head inside and sit with Maggie, okay? Come get me if you need anything."
Isabelle nodded her head in understanding, smiling at the Schmidt woman. The two departed from each other and went in two opposite directions. Isabelle looked up away from her shoes and turned her head to the side, spotting a familiar face watching Kloe.
A smirk was etched on her face as she let out a small laugh and walked over to the young man. "Your eyes are filled with love right now. It's adorable," Isabelle teased, causing Glenn to break away his gaze from the girl he loved.
"Huh?" he asked confusedly, as if he didn't hear what the teenage girl had said. Isabelle grinned widely and shook her head. "Sorry, I was uh-"
"Staring at your girlfriend? Yeah, I kinda caught you," Isabelle laughed, emphasizing on the word 'girlfriend'. Glenn's eyes slightly widened at the word, but without hesitation, he smiled.
"We're, uh, not really official," Glenn stated, folding one arm over his chest and using his other hand to scratch his chin, "yet." He had been thinking of asking her to be an official couple, but right now they were in between. He didn't even know what they were, but they certainly weren't friends.
The Marshel teen's brows furrowed as she looked at the Rhee boy in disbelief. "Wait, really? I thought-'' she cut herself off, finding her next choice of words, "I thought you were together because the past week all you guys do is kiss."
Glenn chuckled, "Like I said, it's not exactly official yet. But it will be." Isabelle's expression went back to a smirk as she let out a laugh at the boy's statement. "I do want to ask her, you know?" the boy began, "But I feel like right now isn't the right time to talk about that kind of thing when there are a lot of other things going on."
Isabelle listened deeply to Glenn's words. "Relationships should always be top priorities, Glenn. No matter what, you need to do what you need to do. Don't hold back, because assuringly, Kloe wants that too," she explained while fiddling with her fingers.
Glenn nodded his head and blinked a few times repeatedly, knowing that Isabelle was right. "Wow, even a teenager is smarter at this sorta thing than me," he laughed, making Isabelle laugh from beside him.
"Age doesn't define that kind of knowledge. I may know more things than you do," she said, a wide smile on her face. She turned back to the house where Kloe had entered with Maggie, spinning back around to face Glenn. "I'm gonna head inside the house and sit with your future girlfriend. Nice chat, Glenn."
Glenn chuckled, sticking up his thumb as he watched the teenage girl walk away, "Alright, nice chat."
"Future girlfriend, huh? My days just get better and better. Very enjoyable," a new voice appeared from behind Glenn. Without even looking, the Rhee boy didn't even have to hesitate to guess who it was.
"Kloe was right. You would be the big number one if there was a competition for the best stalker," Glenn shared, turning his body around to face his best friend. "All you do is stalk, especially if it's something to do with Kloe and I."
"Well, technically, I wasn't stalking. I was here already, you just didn't see me," Zayn snickered.
