Tolu ran his way back home, maneuvering cars, taxis, people. Today had become a wake up call for him, the intense desire had once kept under wraps had gone loose.
His mum would be home by now, he was sure of it, not like she had anywhere else to go.
Opening the door he met her sitting on her couch sipping tea, her favourite.
"back home early?" she said without quite looking at him.
"Mom, have you seen this?" Tolu asked before handing his phone to her, he watched his mum swiped through without much of an interest before returning it to him.
"So?" she asked.
"Sooo?!!!"
"Yes, So?" his mum said before setting down her tea. "i see no reason why you should concern yourself about this"
"Mum i have to go" tolu pleaded.
"No" she said flatly, before picking up her tea again and sipping.
"why mum, why?" Tolu asked.
His mum had always been against his returning to Nigeria. it was more or less like she hated being associated with the country. Since her husband died she always told tolu tales of how she suffered to raise him, how no one cared, how his fathers people abandoned them and took all they had. recounting this always made her teary.
*he doesn't understand*.
She stood up and walked to the kitchen as tolu trailed her, dropping her mug on the cabinet she faced him, "There's Nothing left for you there".

Seyi had trouble sleeping.. He had nightmares, Headache, which made his eyes become bulgy and red. He had refused to speak to anyone or even to go to his shop where he was an apprentice to a mechanic and that always bothered his aunt who brought him to lagos to learn a skill. His 'oga' had given him a week ultimatum to return to work or he wouldn't be allowed to work. He was alone now in his aunts little apartment and being Alone was what he needed now. More than enough time to sort out his head.
Old Man. Sedan. Gunshot. Corpse.
He caught sight of the food which his Aunt had covered for him before she left for work. She was a Primary school teacher and getting up early was a norm. he reluctantly ate little of his food before covering it back and crashing back into his bed.
He had never witnessed a live shooting before, well he had but it had been in movies. But he saw it happened quick enough to grasp it all. He saw first hand how Murder was carried out.
He winced in pain as the headache came back. he hurriedly looked for his painkillers and took them, trying to remember in details how it happened.
His 'oga' had left to return a fixed car to one of his customers and warned him strictly to stay in shop.
"to ba kuro ni bi bai, ma fé lu é pa*"(If you leave this place, I'll beat you to stupor) oga had warned him.
He obeyed up until he had the urge to poo. He had raced a bit further off his shop to a nearby bush, shortly after a sedan had parked and had been parked for half an hour. A little while later an old man had passed, the old man saw him and he greeted him and in less than a minute he heard it. The Gunshot. He was just about to rush to the scene when he saw Him. The Killer.
He was Tall and had a brownish circling round his left eye. The killer had stepped down from his sedan and walked up to the old man, observed him and drove away. Seyi had allowed the dust to settle before going to check of whats left of the man. Seeing the helpless old man with a deep hole forced into his skull. What had he done to deserve this?. His instincts wanted him to call the Police but knowing fully well the consequences he fled home.
Few hours later he and his aunt had been watching the News when The old mans picture came up. A sight that sent Seyis' heart into a frenzy. Details of the killing were later made known and he knew it. the old man killed was Aluko Kosoko and what's more?, It Happened Before his Very Eyes!.

Tolu thought he hadn't heard his mum right. "what do you mean by there's nothing left for me?"
"exactly that" she fired.
There was silence in the room as both of them stared at each other. this was a first. they had never been this heated before, which somewhat bothered tolu. "what are you hiding?" tolu brought himself to ask.
"hiding?"
"yes, what are you running from?. why don't you want me to go back"
the silence response he got from his mother all but confirmed the suspicion he had always held about his mother.
"tell me". tolu pressed further.
*it's now or never* he told himself.
His mum walked past him and sat at her couch. after about what seemed like eternity she said " I've sacrificed enough, i wouldn't have u go back ".
" i raised you with little, and struggled for your upkeep and you think i would watch you go back to a place i swore you wouldn't? ".
" You're always saying that.. I've heard it a billion time.. you do not care about me".Tolu screamed at her.
At that moment his mum got up and slapped him right across his face, the effects sending shockwaves round his body. she had never done that to him before.
"do not question my love for you, i am your mother" she got nearer to him this time. "All I've ever done is to keep you out of arms way. i remarried because he promised to bring us here"
He?.. who's He? Tolu thought. it took him quite a while before he realized "HE" actually meant his step dad.
His mum had met him Two years after his father died where she worked as a salesgirl for a wealthy Alhaja. his step dad was a frequent customer and always had an eye for his mum. He took to wooing her and she decided to let the past remain in the past. At least, that's what she told him.
"So,you never really loved him?" Tolu managed to find his voice now, the effect of the slap wearing off. "so this whole marriage was a scam?".
his mum began to tear up.
" As i told you after your dad died i did several jobs, that's where i met Tunde, your step dad. i never really liked him, he wasn't even my type. i only ever loved your father".
"Then Why?" Tolu asked
"He made several advances towards me but i turned it all down up until he told me his uncle wanted him to come to the US. i knew this was my chance, to give my son and i a future. i agreed and told him i would only marry him if he would take us along which he promised and fulfilled".
" you lied to him".
"the decision i made is what made you the man you are today" she said firmly.
Tolu would have none of it, he stood up and was about leaving the house when he heard his mom blurt out "this kind of stubbornness is what got your father killed". Tolu stopped on his tracks and turned to his mum.
" what did you say?"
he hoped she was just crazy and saying things but he knew he heard what he heard......'this kind of stubbornness is what got your father killed' ...........
his mom crashed on her couch sobbing, she hoped he hadn't heard. but he did.
"mom, what did u say?!" he continued."my dad was killed?!, you told me died in an accident".
His mum couldn't even even look at him which drove him crazy. How could she keep quiet at a time like this?, was she going nuts?.
"your Dad was a Superintendent at the who had grown through the ranks" she started. "he was dedication, doggedness and all other amiable things got to the Governor who wanted to make him a commissioner. However, few other powerful men wanted that post as well". His mum got up, and walked slowly towards tolu, taking his hands into hers.
"Your father was given a choice. Drop the Post and live your life unharmed or Accept it and forfeit your life". she looked him in the eye with coldness in hers. Tolu didn't have to be told the option his dad chose. The Latter.
" your father was killed 24 hours before he was sworn in ". she continued, pacing around the room. " they were coming for us, coming for you. i had to leave behind everything. everything. everything your father walked for over 30 years".
Tolu crashed onto the floor, his mind swirling back and forth and the room becoming smaller. *my dad was murdered?*. for years he lived a lie.
"Do you know what your surname means" his mum crouched beside him bringing tolus thoughts back to life.
Majiyagbe!. he'd never really asked what it meant.
"Ma-Ji-ya-gbe" his mum started "don't suffer and regret...... unfortunately, Tade did".
Tade, his father's name. His father was a cop. A good one at that. suffered in vain.
"majiyagbe is more of a warning than a name".
Tolu didn't want to listen to her anymore. " it's okay" he started "but it's not going to stop me from helping those Whistle blowers back home. dads killers are probably dead by now, i won't let shadows of the past haunt my future" .
His mum was tearing up again, hadn't he listened?. she watched as her son got up and realized this wasn't someone she could try and bend to do her wishes anymore. Tolu dust his body and readjusted his shirt, walking to his mum, he gently pick her up and sat her down on the couch, looking into her eyes he said "don't worry about me mum, I'd be fine" before leaving the room. His mum watched him leave and felt her tears become hotter.
******************************
The FBI chief, Mr. White
looked down at the envelope and focused his gaze on Tolu.
"why'd u wanna do this kid?" he asked flatly.
Tolu was somewhat shocked at his precision, he hadn't even opened the envelope, it had to be Emily.
"No, it wasn't her" he added. almost reading his thoughts
"I've been in the job for donkey years sonnie, i know a resignation letter when i see one"
"well.. uh.. yea.. I've decided to resign. there's something i need to do back at my home country" he struggled to say. he couldn't remember the last time he was face-to-face with the director.
"Something like?" he asked curtly
"just something i need to help them do".
" common Tolu, is it because of the whistle blowing incident in your country?. CNN and the BBC been reporting the case all morning".
" And i understand the need to go" he stood up, rounded and sat at the table
"Everyone needs a hero kid, from time immemorial we've had heroes. our history is littered with them: Mohammed Alli, George Washington, Lincoln, Malcom, and many others who had the intense urge to change something".
"are u scared of death?" he asked him. Tolu hadn't thought of dying in his mission but he knew that was very possible. "I don't know" he answered.
Mr.white got up and went back to his seat.
"You haven't thought of it have you"
Again with the mind reading. Man!.
"You're confident of succeeding and i like that in you. you see that" he pointed at the screen, Tolu followed his fingers at saw a CNN reportage segment going on, flashes of protesters, teargas all over The place.
"look at me son, there's a whole lot of Bull shit going on there"
"Now I'm not saying all these to convince you to stay. no dear. no. I'm saying all these to make sure you're aware of what you're about to get yourself into. i like a young man who takes the bull by the fucking horn. heck!, if i didn't, i wouldn't be sitting here". Mr.White relaxed back in his chair and watched tolu intensely, he could tell the young man was soul searching.
" i want to do this sir" tolu said finally looking at director. he had never removed his gaze off the TV up until that moment.
The director sighed *sorry emily* he said to himself. The Young woman had come crying into his office few hours ago but now seeing the determination in Tolus spirit, *Lets see how far he'll go*!.
"okay kid" he snapped out of his thoughts. "Go and make us at the FBI proud, and you better be alive when all this bullshit is over. A lot of people care about you and their life would be ruined if you fail or die, either ways"
Mum. Emily.
Tolu got up and handed over his FBI badge to Mr.White. he was just about making his way out when the director called out "if you ever get in trouble, which i know you will, you can always call for help". Tolu turned back at him and smiled.
" Yes sir"
"atta boy!".
************************************
Few minutes later Mr.White received a call from DSS Head in Nigeria.
" long time no see" he had said.
"well you never call" Mr.white said. playful rotating on his spinning chair
"well you see the news?".
"ofcourse i did man, its a mess over there".
" we're in a huge mess here, the president is fuming ".
" you don't say" mr.white said, still sitting and completing 360 degrees after 360 degrees of motion
"I'm working on borrowed time as we speak, I've got to sort this mess soon. or the senate will be asking for my head"
"Sad" .
"it's more or less like i need an angel to fall down from the sky right now walk through my door and say he wants to help out"
At that point, Mr.White stopped spinning at the mention of 'Angel' he had just completed another 360degree rotation, he looked at the envelope holding Tolus letter, and then stared at the door he had just walked out from minutes ago
"Well..." mr white started and smiled to himself
"......You're in Luck!"
