Chapter 6:Welcoming Bejoy in Jaipur
A few months had passed, and life in Jaipur had settled into a comfortable routine for Dev, Sonakshi, and Suhana. Dev had fully recovered, and their home was once again filled with laughter and warmth. However, an unexpected tension had been building between Dev and Sonakshi, centered around Sonakshi's father, Bejoy.
One evening, as the family gathered for dinner, the issue finally came to a head.
"Dev, I've been thinking," Sonakshi began cautiously, glancing at Suhana to make sure she was occupied. "My father isn't doing well. He's been alone in Delhi, and it's hard for me to be so far away. I think we should bring him to Jaipur to stay with us."
Dev put down his fork, his expression tightening. "Sonakshi, we've talked about this. Our house isn't big enough to accommodate another person comfortably. We'd be crowded, and it would be a huge adjustment for everyone, especially Suhana."
Sonakshi frowned, frustration bubbling up inside her. "Dev, he's my father. He took care of me for so many years. Now it's my turn to take care of him. And Suhana loves her grandfather; she'd be happy to have him here."
Dev sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It's not just about space, Sonakshi. Your father is set in his ways. You know how stubborn he can be. It's going to disrupt our lives in ways we haven't even considered."
Sonakshi's eyes flashed with anger. "You're only thinking about the inconvenience, not about how much this means to me. He's family, Dev. Doesn't that count for anything?"
"Of course it does!" Dev shot back, his voice rising. "But we need to be realistic. We can't just uproot our lives without considering all the consequences. What if he needs constant care? What if there are health issues we can't handle?"
Sonakshi took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. "We can hire help if needed. We'll find a way. I just can't bear the thought of him being alone."
Dev softened slightly, seeing the pain in her eyes. "I understand that, Sonakshi. But we need to talk this through, think it through properly. It's not just about what we want; it's about what's best for everyone."
"Best for everyone?" Sonakshi repeated, her voice trembling. "What about what's best for him? For me? I feel like you're not even trying to understand."
"I am trying," Dev said quietly. "But I'm also trying to protect our family from making a hasty decision. We need to be prepared for all possibilities."
Suhana, sensing the tension, looked up from her plate. "Mom, Dad, please don't fight. Can't we figure this out together?"
Sonakshi's heart ached at the sight of her daughter's worried face. She reached out to squeeze Suhana's hand. "We're not fighting, sweetheart. We're just trying to work through a difficult situation."
Dev nodded, his expression softening further. "Suhana's right. We need to find a solution that works for everyone."
There was a long silence, the weight of their words hanging heavily in the air. Finally, Sonakshi spoke again, her voice quieter. "Can we at least visit him? See how he's doing and then make a decision?"
Dev nodded slowly. "Yes, we can do that. Let's go to Kolkata and see how he's managing. Maybe we'll find a solution that makes sense for all of us."
Sonakshi felt a flicker of hope. "Thank you, Dev. I just want him to be safe and cared for. We'll figure it out together."
Dev reached across the table to take her hand. "We will. We're a team, Sonakshi. We'll find a way."
As they sat together, the tension began to ease. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was a start. They knew that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, as a family.
The next morning, the tension from the previous evening still lingered in the air. Sonakshi prepared breakfast in the kitchen, her thoughts heavy with the conversation they'd had. She turned when she heard Dev enter, his expression serious but softened by a newfound determination.
"Sonakshi," Dev began, his voice calm, "I've been thinking about our conversation last night."
Sonakshi turned to face him, her heart racing. "And?"
Dev took a deep breath. "After losing my mother, I've realized how important it is to cherish the time we have with our loved ones. I don't want you to go through the pain of being far away from your father if something happens. Let's bring him here. He should stay with us."
Tears welled up in Sonakshi's eyes as she absorbed his words. "Are you sure, Dev? I don't want to force this on you."
Dev stepped closer, taking her hands in his. "I'm sure. Family means everything to me, and I know how much your father means to you. We'll make it work, together."
Sonakshi's tears fell freely now, a mix of relief and gratitude flooding her. "Thank you, Dev. You don't know how much this means to me."
He pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly. "We'll figure it out. We always do."
Later that day, they sat down with Suhana to discuss the plan. Sonakshi explained the situation gently, watching her daughter's reaction carefully.
"Suhana, we've decided to bring your grandfather to live with us," she said, her voice steady but warm. "It might be a big change, but we believe it's the right thing to do."
Suhana's eyes widened in surprise, but she quickly nodded. "I understand, Mom. I love Grandpa, and I want him to be safe and happy. I think it will be nice to have him here."
Dev smiled at his daughter's maturity. "Thank you, Suhana. It means a lot to us that you're on board with this. We'll all have to make some adjustments, but we'll make it work."
Within a few weeks, the preparations were complete. Sonakshi and Dev flew to Delhi to bring Bejoy back to Jaipur. The reunion was emotional, with Bejoy overwhelmed by their care and insistence.
"Are you sure this is okay?" Bejoy asked, his voice wavering as they packed his belongings. "I don't want to be a burden."
"Dad, you could never be a burden," Sonakshi said firmly. "We want you with us. We're family, and family takes care of each other."
Dev nodded in agreement. "We're all looking forward to having you with us, Baba. It's going to be good for everyone."
When they finally arrived back in Jaipur, Suhana greeted her grandfather with a big hug. "Welcome home, Grandpa!"
Bejoy smiled, his eyes moist with emotion. "Thank you, Suhana. I'm so happy to be here with all of you."
The days that followed were filled with adjustments, but also with warmth and newfound closeness. Bejoy settled into their home, his presence bringing a new dynamic to their family life. Suhana loved listening to his stories, and Dev and Sonakshi felt a deep sense of fulfillment knowing they were doing the right thing.
One evening, as they all sat together in the living room, Sonakshi looked around at her family, her heart full. "I'm so grateful for this," she said softly. "For all of you."
Dev squeezed her hand, smiling. "We're grateful too. This is what family is all about."
Bejoy nodded, his eyes shining with tears. "I never thought I'd find such happiness again at this stage of my life. Thank you, all of you, for making me feel so welcome."
Suhana leaned against her grandfather, smiling up at him. "We're glad you're here, Grandpa. We love you."
As they sat together, the warmth of their love and unity enveloping them, Sonakshi knew they had made the right decision. No matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, their family stronger than ever.
