5. Biggest Regret of life

Rohit was frustrated with the response he was getting from his brother. This was the reason he had not told him anything. But guess what he realized too early that he should have told it before.
Rohit-"Yaar Maan sun na toh-"
Armaan-"Kya sunu main huh kya sunu bata, to aaj Mrs. Gupta say milne jane wala tha woh bhi kisi ko bataya bhi nahi, how could you Rohit. Did you even think Ma aur Baba ko kitna bura lagega huh bol ab kyu bol nahi raha kya hua billi nay kaat liya kya. Tu kuch-"
Rohit-"Are mere pyaare bhai, ek baar sun toh lo mujhe kya keh na hai phir chahe jitna man chahe baat karle na okay.
Armaan calming himself-"Bol"
Rohit- "Main nahi jana chahta tha par jab unhone itna poocha toh mujhse raha nahi gaya, mujhe pata hai mujhe milna nah chahiye tha par us wakt khud ko rok nahi paya main aur socha ki sab kuch khatam hone key baad apse baat kar kar dekhunga."
Armaan sighed, he can't blame his brother for acting so out of the way. He had always been like that when it came to people. He picks only the good qualities. That is why both he and their bhaiya were extra-protective of him. They tried changing his ways but then- harkat badal sakte hai fitrat nahi. But the question was does she have to meet him after all these years. What is that she wants from them. Anyways he just hopes she wouldn't mess up his brother's life anymore, he has had his fair share long back itself. He doesn't want him to get hurt more especially now that one more life is joined with his who is unaware about all the past happenings. He came out from his thoughts hearing Rohit's worried voice.
Rohit concerned-"Maan yaar tu thik hai na, kuch bol kyu nahi raha."
Armaan-"Tension mat ley Rohit mai thik hoon. Par mere man main ek sawal hai jo abhi tak gaya nahi."
Rohit confused- "Kya."
Armaan-"Why now Rohit, why did she come back now. What is that she wants."
Rohit had no answer to give. He himself was confused as to what that woman wants more from him now. Armaan bid bye when he realized even Rohit had no clue. Rohit didn't answer and was still lost in the past happenings. The woman whom he once looked up to, the woman whom he loved. The very same woman who messed up his life, who hurt him badly and scared him for life. The very same woman. His mother. Mrs. Arti Gupta.
His eyes steeled as his mind latched on their last meet.
Flashback
Arti- " aap ko ek baat kyun nahi samajh aata bhabhi nahi chahiye mujhe."
Dipti- "Aise kaise nahi chahiye Arti wo koi khilona nahi hai, bacha hai tumhare, tumne peda Kiya hai use aur Aaj aise hi chod doge tum, kya galti ki hai uss chaar saal key bache ne tumhare saath batao."
Arti- "Oh come on Bhabhi please yeh mahan Banna mujhse nahi hoga aur rahi baat uski galti ki toh uski koi galti nahi hai Bhabhi, balki galti toh wo khud hi hai na."
Rohit and Armaan who were listening to the talk stealthily, looked back at each other. What does being a mistake mean. How can a person be wrong. But both had no answer to their innocent questions. That was when Adhvik reached that place, he was finding them because he didn't want their parents to scold them. They were explicitly told not to come out of the room. So Adhivik being the mature and the eldest one took up the responsibility but a small lapse and his boys were gone making him worried and that raised when he saw them hearing the talk. He instantly pulled them back into the room.
Adhivk angrily- "Kya hai tum dono ka mana Kiya tha na wah Jane say, main kya do second washroom Gaya toh dono bhag gaye, kya Karu main dona ka bolo, Agar Ma aur Baba ne dekh liya toh. Tum dono ke -
Armaan irritated- "Oh really bhiya, yaar ap na mamma ki trha humpar tussa karna band karenge."
Adhvik palmed his face, his brother had zero preservation skills that was why he was the most punished guy in the household. He looked at Rohit who was lost in his thoughts. He nudged him slightly to speak.
Rohit-"Galti hone kya hota hai bhaiya."
Adhvik confused-"doing wrong."
Armaan- "tch wo wala nahi bhaiya, tum galti ho iska kya matlab niklega, kyoki jis tarha se sab react kar rahe tha it seemed serious." He knew eavesdropping was not manners but childish curiosity got the best out of him.
Whereas Adhivk stilled so they did hear that. Even he had heard that but unlike them the ten year old mature boy knew exactly what she had meant but he was confused how to say that without hurting them. He doesn't want his boys to be hurt in any way so he took the easy and truthful route.
Adhvik taking a deep breath- "koi bhi log galat nahi hota bacha, Aisa bolne Wale loge ki hi galti hoti hai." he smiled seeing a mix of understanding and confusions dancing in their eyes. He felt satisfied realizing that he was able to give them answers without robbing off their innocence. He sat on his knees and hugged both of them promising himself that he would protect his siblings at any cost. They won't get hurt till the time he was around. The decision was taken. The loud war of words were still going on but the brothers held on to each other promising an eternity of togetherness.
Flashback Ends
Rohit came out of the memory as a single drop of tear rushed out of his eyes. He hurriedly rubbed it off. He could remember the numerous times when he cried himself to sleep after leaving his home. He loved the woman who gave birth to him but he owed the woman who raised him and taught him what it is to be loved. There was a time when he threw tantrums to go back home unaware of the fact that he was at home. And that is and will be the biggest regret of his life.
-------------------------(0)---------------------------
Karthikey was strolling through the corridor sulking badly. He was forcefully sent to sleep when he didn't want to and his brutes of a sister was nowhere to be found. He groaned when left after checking the last room on the floor. He was about to give up when ha saw the terrace door open slightly. His brows curved into confusion thinking that no one in the house comes at the terrace at this hour but his mind clicked with a possibility and he relaxed realizing it was his sister who was very fond of star gazing.
Karthikey entering the terrace found his sister sitting with her eyes closed but she was not alone. He closed his eyes as a painful familiar scene replayed in front of him. He opened his eyes and looked back at his sister who was smoking in silence. This was the only vice his sister ever had. Even though the frequency is reduced, she uses the addiction as a means of distraction which she thoroughly hated. What she needed was to talk not to submit to such vices. Over the course of time she herself had tried to stop it but then lapsed back. He tried his best to support her but she always lacked motivation. He walked towards her before throwing the still burning death stick. He had enough of her silence for a lifetime it was time he had a talk with his sister and he knew that he had the right to do so.
Roohi irritated- "What the hell, Karthikey beech main tang adana zaroori hey kya."
Karthi glaring at her- "Care to explain when you started taking them again, I thought you finally stopped it."
Roohi smiling sarcastically- " Yo bro come on kya farak padta hai aur waise bhi unlike people these sticks can't say wo toh kabhi nahi kahenge na ki Roohi you disappointed me." Karthi stilled as he understood what all this was about.
He gently asked her- "Mamma ne kuch kaha di", he closed his eyes when he saw her smiling at him. He knew what that exactly was - a pretence. He should have thought that nothing could hurt his strong sister. He doesn't know whom he should support the parents who raised him with love and care for the past 24 years or the sister who has been with for 21 years now. Whoever wins or loses it was he who was going to get hurt but he couldn't blame his sister but neither could he be angry with his parents. He just doesn't know what to do. So he did the thing which he found sensible. He sat beside her and held her palm squeezing some life in those weary part.
Karthi- "Di dukhi mat raho na bua aur fufu apko aise dekh kar-
Roohi cutting him- "bohot disappointed feel kar rahe honge isn't bro, keh kaha hamari beti jise hamne bade nazo say pala tha aur kaha yeh ladki jo bus ek looser banker reh gayi hai just a looser bro just a bloody looser." she ended her monologue bitterly hurting Karthi, he hated it when she did that but would she ever realise that. Her hurt had stopped him from confronting but with passing time it was getting more and more painful for him to contain his hurt .
Taking a deep breath he continued- " What I meant is that they will not like you hurting yourself di, neither do I, you get that and please stop it Di, stop hurting yourself Di."
Roohi looked back at him trying to read him but nothing was getting into her already occupied brain making her sigh. She quietly obeyed him when he passed a chewing gum to her which she had bought with her and followed him to her room.
Karthikey sighed in pain seeing his sister close the door of her room. A question rang in his mind- When will this end?
Whereas Roohi leaned towards the closed door. She was no fool, she may not realise what was going on in her brother's mind but one thing was clear- he was hurt. And she hated herself for making him feel like that. That was is and will be the biggest regret of her life.
