10. Because your fire is different
~A week and a half later~
Mirya's adoption had been postponed for two weeks, and now she only had three more days to wait. She let the fire curl around her wrist, winding it's way up to her fingers. "I don't think you understand," she murmured to Enzo, her element trainer. "It's not like light."
"But light is the closest to fire, so it is," Enzo snapped his fingers, and a streak of light flashed out.
"But it's different," Mirya had been trying to convince him that fire was different, and needed different training. But Enzo didn't listen.
"Unless you want to train by yourself," he snapped, "you're stuck with me."
"Honestly? I'd prefer to train alone," she whispered under her breath.
"I heard that."
"So?"
"You know, you need to learn some respect," Enzo folded his arms.
Mirya copied him, glaring into his green eyes.
He rolled his eyes and sighed, hands falling to his sides. "Okay, if you can prove to me that you know what you're doing, I'll let you have some time to practice- on your own."
"Good," Mirya nodded. "Tomorrow I'll show you."
"Why not now?"
The bells rang, meaning element training was over, and it was lunchtime.
"That's why," she walked out of the strange room she had to practice in confidently.
"How was practice?" Wyatt greeted her in the cafeteria.
"Fine," Mirya answered. "Enzo finally decided I can practice on my own, because fire isn't the same as light."
"That's good," Haisley approved. "By the way, what's it like? Y'know, having a ability to control an element?"
"It's..." Mirya had to think for a moment before she decided on the word. "Natural."
"It's... Natural?"
"Yeah." She snapped her fingers, and a dark orange flame appeared on her hand. "Natural." The fire weaved it's way around, then, curling her fingers, it disappeared.
"That's really cool!" Waylon exclaimed form behind them. He flicked his wrist, and a small wave of water went for Annika, but the blue-eyed twin was faster. She waved her left arm, and a strong wind lifted the water above Waylon, then stopped, making the water splash on his head, soaking him. "Hey!"
Annika stuck her tongue out at him, and he closed his eyes, drawing all the water out of his clothes, then evaporated it.
"And you call this cool?" Mirya asked, flickering up another small flame.
"Yes," Waylon agreed. "Because your fire is different than any fire I've ever seen."
"What?" Wyatt asked.
"It would be better to show you outside. So we don't get everything wet."
"Umm..." Mirya muttered at the same time as Haisley called, "Hurry up! You four are going to miss lunch!"
"Coming!" Annika yelled.
After a lunch was biology class, then home time. Mirya, Wyatt and Haisley all went over to Annika and Waylon's home- which turned out to be much different than what Mirya had expected.
It was big- obviously- and they had a huge yard. A whole forest!
Once they had arrived, Waylon had run into the forest, and Wyatt followed. The three girls walked a bit more slowly, but Mirya was getting impatient to know what Waylon had meant by 'your fire is different'.
"Okay," Waylon's voice wasn't much father ahead. "Hurry up, you three!" Once they were all in the clearing surrounded by all different types of trees, he spoke again. "Okay, Mirya, light a small flame on your hand." Once she started it, he through a small wave of water on it. Nothing. The water evaporated before it touched the fire.
"What?"
"See what I mean? It's different. Now," he beckoned everyone except Mirya to stand behind him. "are you okay if you might get a little wet?"
"Y- yeah... I guess."
"Good." When everyone was behind him, he raised his arms, and brought them down.
"I thought you said a little wet!" Mirya screamed as the massive wave came crashing down. She held up her hands to shield her face- not that it would've worked, but when she opened her eyes she saw...
A wall of fire.
She stood there in shock, gazing at the thirty-foot-tall wall made completely of flame with wonder. Then she closed her eyes, and taking a deep breath, she waved her hands, and when she opened them again, a wall of fire was gone.
"Wow..." Wyatt breathed, and the other echoed him.
"How did you do that?!" Haisley hollered.
"I'm... not sure," Mirya admitted.
"I told you," Waylon nodded proudly. "And that water... it just... disappeared. I can't feel it in the air anymore."
"Well, at least we know I can protect myself if those... I don't know what to call them, come back."
"And you need to practice even more now." Wyatt added.
"Why?"
"Just think: what would happen if that got out of control? Or if you need to protect more than just yourself?"
"True. Now then, we should go, because we never even told our parents that we were going to not come straight home."
"Good idea."
"Oh, and, Mirya?" Waylon added at the last possible second.
"Yes?"
"You might want to tell Whispers about this, and do not let the king find out."
"Why?"
"Just don't."
For anyone wondering: Mirya's full name is Mirya Faith Railin.
