Seven

George wasn't sure if he thought Fred was better or worse now that he was at Calliope's bedside. The group- which consisted of Fred, Lupin, Sirius, Natalie and George- were all huddled around the bed on which lay the unconscious Calliope.

Fred's eyes hadn't left Calliope since they arrived, but he hadn't yet reached out his hands to take her's yet.

"She's a bit better," Remus told Natalie and George, "Poppy said that it's probably a good thing that she's unconscious, otherwise the pain would be unbearable."

"It would be," Fred confirmed.

"Do you know what spell she was hit with?" Natalie asked.

"No, but whatever it was it was powerful," said Sirius. "She's lucky to be alive."

"Lucky!" Fred tutted, "are any of us really lucky?"

No one answered Fred's question. It wasn't as though he was really looking for an answer.

Fred watched the rise and fall of Calliope's chest and listened to the soft hum of the bond in his mind. Whilst the others spoke quietly he simply used these two things to remind himself that Calliope was alive, she was safe from the Death Eaters and she was right in front of him for the first time in months.

If only she were awake then he could ask her all of the questions that had plagued him for months; Why had she left? Why didn't she talk to him? Why did she put him through all of that pain?

"Is she going to be okay?" Natalie asked Remus.

"We can only hope," said Remus.

Fred reached out his hands and took Calliope's into both of his. The familiar electricity spread through his veins, warming his whole body and making him feel better than he had in months. The heat spreading through him began to become uncomfortable and then painful until his blood seemed to have been replaced with fire.

"Fred are you okay?" Natalie was the first to notice that there was something wrong, "you've gone all red and your face is telling me that you're in pain or you're constipated."

Fred let go of Calliope's hand and the fire in his veins dissipated, just as Calliope's eyes opened.

"Callie?" Fred grabbed her hand back and the warm sensation spread back through him, only this time it didn't feel like fire, just uncomfortably hot.

Calliope swore loudly, "it hurts."

"I know," Fred smoothed some hair away from her face, "I know it hurts Callie."

She was breathing heavily, and Fred could feel the ghost of the pain that she was feeling through the bond. The spot on her back where the spell had hit her was the main point of pain, but the tendons of the spell seemed to be wrapped around all of her body down to her toes. But she was awake, which was something that Fred had been unsure would happen for a long time.

A tear slipped out from the corner of Calliope's eye and Fred whipped it away with the tips of his fingers. He kissed her forehead and lay his head down on the pillow beside her head, keeping her hand in his the whole time.
