Chapter 3

Whispers woke up Whirlkit. He rubbed his eyes groggily and yawned. It was almost sunhigh, so when he looked around and saw that none of his denmates were in the Nursery, he wasn't surprised. Confused, he padded out of he den, and was shocked to see every WindClan cat crowded around the middle of camp. He squeezed through the torment of excited cats, and his eyes widened.

It was Horsekit! But with three legs...

He gasped, getting a naughty look from a ginger warrior he recognized as Eagleeye. He returned it with an apologetic glance. Then he turned back to Horsekit.

Horsekit was hobbling slowly around the circle, her tongue sticking out of her mouth in concentration. Whirlkit giggled, and shut his mouth sharply. He scolded himself for laughing, and halfway because he thought he looked silly... in a lovable way.

She stumbled around for a couple of heartbeats, and then stood up straight. She smiled her goofy smile, and the crowd erupted into cheers. Whirlkit, not knowing why, joined in. He searched for Horskit's gaze, and finally caught it. He saw the look of hope and pride in the purple pools as she smiled back.

Whirlkit felt happier for some odd reason. He did not like her, so what was going on? Was he sick? He needed to let Creamleaf check him out after the celebration.

Whirlkit left, not wanting to see her sly smile as she gazed at her. He could almost feel her disappointment as he left. He shrugged it off, a low growl forming in his throat. He dismissed it quickly, not wanting to get mad over a small thing he was making a big deal over.

He flopped in his nest, sighing. He looked over and saw Grindkit, his back turned to Whirlkit. He stood up, and padded over to him.

"Um, Grindkit?" He whispered hoarsely.

Whirlkit realized sadly that Grindkit's shoulders were shaking. He heard quite sobs as he got closer. Grindkit rolled over, and wiped his eyes. He sniffed, and looked solemn as he focused on Whirlkit. His eyes were puffy, and his cheek fur was slick from tears. "What?" He croaked.

Whirlkit lifted a paw, and looked around, mouth half open. Then he set his paw down and stared straight into his friend's eyes. "Are you okay?"

Grindkit shook his head slowly and turned over, and began to cry again.

Whirlkit left, knowing that he needed to be alone in his grief for his siblings.

Whirlkit stopped and narrowed his eyes. He hadn't seen Redkit in a while. Maybe he was in the medicine den and too hurt to come out. He tried to push it to the back of his mind, but it stuck. He didn't want to do what he was about to do, but he had to. Or he could wait, which was torture to Whirlkit, so he decided to go with the question.

He padded back up to Grindkit, and tapped him on the shoulder with his tail. Grindkit turned again, looking aggrieved. "What now?" He snarled.

Taken aback, Whirlkit narrowed his eyes. "What did you do to Redkit, huh?" He retorted, sounding more harsh than he intended.

Grindkit's face went blank, and his lip quivered as he looked at Whirlkit. Tears formed from his tear ducts, and he bursted into sobs. He actually stood up, and ran out of the Nursery.

Whirlkit looked after him with an accusing gaze. He felt a little sorry for what he said, but he didn't get it. He was just in the medicine den, right? He decided to go check, and apologize to Grindkit later.

He padded into the medicine den, ignoring Horsekit's amazing feats. He peeked inside, seeing no Redkit. Wherever he was, he was probably really hurt. But wait... Creamleaf was in there. Why wasn't she tending to him? He walked inside, skimming over the den, looking for a flash of red pelt, but he saw nothing.

Creamleaf's ears twitched, sending a sign that she knew that he was there. "Creamleaf?" He asked quietly.

She turned. "Yes, Whirlkit?" She didn't look to impressed.

"Where's Redkit?"

Creamleaf's face was solemn. "He's dead." She turned back, and continued organizing herbs.

Whirlkit staggered, and gasped. He ran out of the den, his tail streaming behind him. He stumbled back into his nest, and landed, crying. He was such a bully! Grindkit was so upset about him losing his brother, and Whirlkit made it worse. Some kind of kit he was.

His cries took over his body, sending shudders through him as he fell asleep to his silent cries of pain.
