Chapter 2

"Fox! Fox!!!" Some cat yelled in the morning. Whirlkit opened his eyes groggily, not knowing what a 'fox' was. He looked around to see Cherrymoon standing up quickly, pushing his three littermates off. They woke up and meowed in protest, but were silenced as their foster mother listened carefully.

It was a kit who was wailing for help. Whirlkit listened as the little scrap of fur explained.

"... and then something growled in the woods, a-and then the fox jumped out and H-Horsekit told me to g-get help so I need yo-you guys to follow me!" He cried in anguish.

"Grindkit!" A voice meowed fiercely. Whirlkit switched his gaze and saw Stormstar pushing his way through crowded cats. "Grindkit. Take Crowpelt and the others." He looked at the crowd. "Warriors, go. Queens," He looked at Cherrymoon. "stay and guard the kits. I need a few warriors to stay and guard the camp if the fox gets away. Any volunteers?"

"I'll stay," Rabbitear announced.

"Me too!" Birdtail, Scarletnose, and Barktooth added in unison.

Stormstar nodded. "Let's move, my clan!" He ushered Crowpelt to the lead, and the waved her tail to the warriors, and they excited the camp eagerly.

"Can I go?" Whined Dustkit. "Why can't I go?"

Cherrymoon looked grave as she answered, "Your not old enough." She smiled ever so slightly. "Plus, you'd be killed." She turned and padded back into the den. "Come!" She called to them. "We must stay safe!"

The kits followed hurriedly, while Dustkit ran inside. Apparently her answer frightened him a little bit. As Whirlkit settled underneath Cherrymoon, a thought struck him. Grindkit had said that Horsekit had told him to fetch help! Which meant that she was out there, facing a fox! He still didn't know what a fox was, but by the warriors' ruffled fur, it seemed like a creature that no cat wanted to face. He decided to ask Cherrymoon as his heart raced.

"Cherrymoon," He squeaked. He sounded more confident than he felt. "What's a fox?"

Cherrymoon sighed. "A fox is a very dangerous animal." She stared at him, her blue eyes intense. "If you see one, run away as fast as your legs can, and report to the camp. Immediately." Then she returned to normal. "A fox is an enemy with a red-orange pelt, and a long slender face. They have a white tipped tail, so you can always tell it's a fox by it's tail. Also, it had brown beady eyes that will stare you down. Always look in its eyes, silently voicing a challenge, okay, Whirlkit?"

Whirlkit nodded, his mind whirling. That was probably why he was named Whirlkit, he was always thinking about something. Whoever he real mother was, knew him perfectly. He silently wished that he could see her one more time, and tell her that he and his siblings were safe! Oh, how he wished.

Cherrymoon was alert the whole time while the kits napped. Every once in a while, she'd look at the nest close to hers. It was Horsekit, Grindkit, and Redkit's mother, Cinderstripe's. But she went to help attack the fox and save her kits. Whirlkit has already figured out that she was Cinderstripe's best friend, and they cared deeply for each other, moons built upon working and helping the clan together. It made their bond strong, something that many cats in the clan couldn't say. Whirlkit envied someone to count on like Cherrymoon did with Cinderstripe. Did his littermates count? Honestly, he wasn't sure. Whirlkit sighed.

"What's wrong?" Rainkit piped up. It was the first time she'd spoke today, and she was always the one who cared about his feelings. Dustkit and Cloverkit... not so much.

"I'm worried about Horsekit." He replied. When he saw Rainkit's smirk, he added, "a-and Grindkit and Redkit."

Rainkit laughed. "You have a crush on Horsekit, don't you?" She teased, her white teeth gleaming.

Whirlkit huffed indignantly. "I do not!" He argued.

Rainkit twitched her whiskers in amusement. "Ookkayy..." she turned and laid her head down to sleep.

Whirlkit rolled his eyes. She doesn't know what she's talking about! How can she accuse that without even getting proof? She's so... so... ANNOYING! When he thought the last words, he knew they weren't true. He was just mad that she went along and accused him of doing something she didn't even know about! How dare she!

But as he thought of Horsekit in danger, he couldn't help his but feel his heart pound.
