A Mountain Man and a Lawyer Man
Prompt: Class, photo slideshow, I'll see if I can't find the photo and post it at some point.
Edward heard a crash and his secretary, Wanda, yelling for security. Edward was contemplating getting up and seeing what all the commotion was about when the door to his office was flung open, bouncing off the wall and knocking off a picture.
The man standing in the doorway was the strangest looking man that Edward had ever laid eyes on. He had long wild white-gray hair and worn floppy brown hat that had clearly seen better days. The man had a guitar slung over one shoulder, a bag that was definitely moving over the other, and a large black raven perched on his shoulder.
"Can I help you?" Edward asked. The wild looking man closed the door and Edward wondered how fast security could get here.
"You're a lawyer," the man said.
"No," Edward replied. "We do insurance here, the lawyer offices are up a floor."
Edward hadn't gotten up from his desk yet and the man hadn't moved away from the door. The raven flapped onto Edwards's desk and cawed loudly.
"Poe there likes you," the man said with a wide toothy grin. "Here, give him some bread." The man moved away from the door and sat in one of the chairs in front of Edwards's desk. The moving bag and the guitar went in the other. Edward found himself being handed a small crust of stale bread. For lack of anything better to do with the bread, Edward broke off a piece and handed it to Poe.
"Good birdie," the man said. Poe took the bread and flapped back to the man's shoulder.
"I can show you where the lawyers' office is Mr.-," Edward said.
"Names Jeramiah," he said. "And I think you Mr. Insurance man can help me."
"What do you need my help for?"
"How much you know about the Grover State Park?"
Edward shrugged. "Not much." He had been camping there a few times. Back when was still a kid.
There was a pounding on the door.
Jeramiah swore and thrust the moving bag at Edward. "Watch my things for me," he said. "I'll be back to collect them soon."
"What?" Edward asked. The bag was dropped in his lap and two rabbits emerged. One was pure black and the other was a mottled blend of browns and whites. "How many animals do you have?"
Jeramiah ignored him and security got the door unlocked. Two men in dark security uniforms grabbed Jeramiah and dragged him out the door.
"The rabbits are Walden and Eliot," Jeramiah yelled. "Don't let them touch my guitar." A third security officer stayed behind as the other two wrestled Jeramiah down the hall. Edward could hear him yelling the whole way.
"Any idea what the crazy guy wanted?" The security officer asked.
Edward placed the bag with the rabbits on the floor. "Something about a state park."
"Want us to take care of that?" The security officer asked, nodding towards the rabbits.
"No," Edward replied. "I've got a niece who'd love them." Security left and closed the door. Poe flapped back onto Edward's desk. He pecked at the remaining piece of stale bread and then at the fountain pens.
"Shoo," Edward waved a hand at Poe. The bird flew over and perched on the guitar, glaring at Edward with beady black eyes.
Edward ignored the bird and the two rabbits who were chewing on the paper laying around his garbage. He was too busy typing in Grover State Park on the computer to notice.
