Stepping off the plane Arjun had a strange sense of coming home, even though he wasn't very fond of Indian lifestyle, still he liked being home. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the fresh evening air. Something in the air just seemed to make him smile and it did not go away even as he was entering the crowded airport, making his way along with the other passengers.
He had no luggage to reclaim as He was travelling only with a Brown Leather Duffel Bag, which sped things up and he went straight for the exit. He felt his father's presence there, yet as He was looking at the many faces of the people, waiting, for his father, whom, he could not find.
Arjun kept walking slowly trying to spot him, but it was only once he'd moved past the majority of people that He saw his father coming over to Him. He stopped and just stared for some moment. It had been a long time since he'd seen his father, may be more than a year and he had changed a lot since.
Then Arjun walked over to meet His father and touched his feet to respect. "Dad, how are you?"
"How was your journey?" Mr. Malhotra, Arjun's father asked as he reached for a fatherly embrace.
"All right, though it was a very long trip."
"Are you feeling hungry? Want to eat something?" Mr. Malhotra asked, as they were walking out of the airport.
"No, dad just bring the car around, I just want to go home take some rest" Arjun replied.
After Arjun's Duffel Bag was loaded in the back seat, he climbed into the car with his father in the driving seat and he sitting in the passenger seat.
"How is mom? Moreover, what about Dhruv? Why didn't he come with you to pick me up this time"? Arjun asked his father, as he started driving toward their house.
"Everybody is all right. Your mom and I are keeping us healthy and Dhruv is busy with his studies, he also wants to do something good like you." Mr. Malhotra explained his son the scenario of the house quickly.
"I am sure Dhruv, will do better than me" Arjun smiled.
"How is your job and when will your project getting over?"
"My job is going through a pretty good phase and by the way I enjoy a lot in Chicago. I just finished one of the biggest projects a couple of weeks ago. Now that it is done, I took a long leave and come to visit you. Why don't you all come with me this time I go back to Illinois?"
"We will see that later, I like being in India but surely we will visit Chicago soon" Mr. Malhotra answered, and Arjun respond with a smile. He looked out of the window as his father was driving; the noise, the smell the hocking vehicles. As they drove through the road and it took him back to his college days and he found out how much miss this in the US and its disciplined roads.
When they arrived home, though it was the month December It was hot because the heater was on.
"Bhaiya!" Dhruv, Arjun's brother squealed and ran to him for a hugged. With the noise his mother came out from the kitchen with a bowl, but as she saw Arjun, she placed the bowl on the table and she also ran to him.
He touched his mother's feet and hugged Dhruv.
It was past eleven o'clock, but no one had their dinner. Malhotra family has dinner by 9:30 it was unusual to be so late for dinner, but that day, they waited for Arjun.
"All right, as tomorrow is Sunday, a holiday I will catch up with you. Now I am retiring for this night." Mr. Malhotra said as he patted Arjun's back and went to his bedroom.
"After a long time I ate such a good food." Arjun chuckled to Dhruv who was still sitting at the dining table giving company to his brother.
"What do you do for food in the US?" Dhruv asked Arjun, with curiosity, as he knew Arjun was never good at cooking.
"It depends; most of the time I try to get satisfied with the frozen foods and sometimes go out to a restaurant not only Indian but also Thai, Mexican or Chinese too"
"Don't you get lonely being in America?"
"I am glad that I came for a holiday here, sometimes the loneliness kills me though I have a friend group there and people are very good but foreign is foreign and home is home.......... Let's catch up tomorrow I am tired and want to sleep now." Arjun yawned, he wanted to talk much more with Dhruv but he was too tired to sit there, he was feeling like he hasn't slept for days.
"Yeah, it is truth that home is home bro... Go and take a tight sleep... Goodnight"
Arjun found himself sighing as he brushed his hair for bed; he navigated his way into the bed by memory, falling onto the cool sheets with a contented smile. He loved spending time at home on holidays from office. He shrugged away his thoughts of project work and meeting, rolling onto his side and pulled the blankets up warmly around him. He purred at the warmth, but thought about the real purpose of coming to India flashed into his mind. Of course, he wanted to spend time with his family, but there is one more reason his plans about getting married.
The name of that reason was Diana Wells, who had worked with him in his last project. At the youthful age of 25, she was a lovely young lady and she was extremely committed to her work and she appeared to coexist with different colleagues, maybe it was her style or her relational abilities. A hefty portion of their seniors and supervisors had additionally welcomed her working aptitude. Indeed, she was one of the best students in her college.
Arjun and Diana were associates, as well as great companions. It was hard not to be friends with Diana. In any case, Arjun needed Diana to be more than his coworker or simply easygoing companions. However, he didn't take any step for the relationship as he didn't want to hurt his parents, but he was very confident that his parents will only think about his happiness and will agree on his relationship with Diana.
Contemplating about how explain and convince his parents about, Arjun curled up under his blanket once again. His eyes slowly became heavy and eventually they closed, and he drifted into sleep.
Next morning Arjun opened his eyes to the sound of the chant from the nearby temple that awoke the part of the town each morning at seven. It used creepy alarm for Arjun in his school days. The cheerful voice of school going kids, the sound of tinkling bells of cycles and caws and chips from birds in the background made it a noisy but a pleasant morning. The sun was bright the morning skies. Groaning, he pulled himself out of bed reluctantly, and rubbed his eyes. He stood up and nearly toppled over; his limbs felt like noodles. Stumbling over to the bathroom.
Food. The smell of food was in the air, and it smelled amazing. He was actually quite happy with the smell of fresh Indian breakfast as he would never get up this early to make him a breakfast and would satisfy himself with bread and butter. The food brought a fuzzy warm feeling to Him that he felt in his head to toe. It smelled like it was made with love.
He threw on his shirt and slippers as fast and he could and darted down the slippery hallway and into the kitchen.
"Mom, you did make... Breakfast?" he squealed, the sound of steel utensils, pressure cooker, and water from tap indicating that house course has begun in every household.
"Well every day, I make breakfast" Mrs., Malhotra Arjun's mother said while pouring Arjun a class of juice.
"And well, I miss that every day" Arjun pouted.
"I feel so proud of you I want to you to know that you have what it takes to make something of yourself. You have a brain and you are getting this opportunity to make it, I'm so proud, I love you. "Mrs. Malhotra said while hugging her son.
"Thanks Mom, I love you too"
"What's going on between Mother and her son?" Mr. Malhotra smiled, picking up the daily newspaper from the coffee table.
"My Arjun missed my cooking" Mrs. Malhotra proudly raised her shoulders.
"Indeed, he should, you are an amazing cook," Mr. Malhotra praised his wife, and Arjun smiled seeing the eternal love between his parents.
Then Mrs. Malhotra said, "Now it is the time to bring a beautiful wife for Arjun, isn't that?"
"Arjun, that's reminds me, you recalled the last time we had the video chat with you and you showed a lot interest in marriage, Do you want to get married?" Mr., Malhotra turned to Arjun who was enjoying his breakfast that time.
"Yes dad, but only if I find the right person" Arjun shrugged
"Thus, I have selected a decent girl for you, and I want you to see her." Mr. Malhotra said, and Arjun got blank out for some moment. He couldn't interpret what is father was attempting to say.
"What dad! What you do you mean by you have chosen a girl for me? You never told me about this while I was in Chicago." Arjun shouted at the top of his voice.
"Let's just all be calm and you showed interest in marriage, so we did that. There's no need to scream Arjun." Mrs. Malhotra said, trying to soothe her son down.
He looked to the other side; he never ever thought that his parents would take such a big step. He came here to convince his parent for his relationship with Diana. So I could go and propose Dina, what was happening?
"Calm down? How can you expect me to do that? You're asking me to meet a girl of your choice? Why? Because by mistake I show a little interest of getting married" He was pacing back and forth in the kitchen area while his mother and father just sat there watching his outburst.
"Arjun, you must see your father's choice." Mrs. Malhotra, his mother tried to reason with him.
"Dad, would you mind if I say something regarding to my marriage?" Arjun hissed spitting his distress. His father stared at him and waited for him to continue.
Arjun took a deep breath and said, "I don't believe in an arranged marriage and I think we create a better understanding if we know each other---." He got cut off by a questioned from his father "Do you date someone, Means you have any girl friend?"
"No dad, but I want--"He was cut yet again by his mother this time.
"Then what is your problem? If you do not have any girlfriend... your father and I also had a arrange marriage and we are very happy with our relationship."
Arjun shook his head because he obviously had nothing else to say. And after a silence followed his father, Mr. Malhotra spoke again, this time it sounded like more like an order to Arjun. "Arjun, I would like you to meet Mr. and Mrs. Virk and their elder daughter Aditi. She is the one I chose for you"
After a brief pause, his father continued by saying," Aditi is a very sweet girl, good looking and well educated girl... I think she is best for you. When you talked about your plan to marry Aditi came into my mind... I saw her when she was small but now Mr. and Mrs. Virk has done a fabulous job raising Aditi into a very responsible and mature girl. "
"Is she a well educated girl?" it was the first questioned asked by Arjun, he liked for Diana was for her skilled in education and occupation.
"Indeed, she is well educated, doing her master in biology and In addition, she is a very good classical dancer.
Arjun raised his eyebrow, he was quite curious to meet a girl like Aditi, who was actually agreeing to an arranged marriage.
