Aditi, barefooted strolled into a large room, Looked at herself in the mirror, gazing into her darkest shades of black eyes. Her white skin was gleaming bright with the sun coming from the windows. She was wearing a flowing Kurta that went downward to her ankle and her Dupatta was tied freely around her waistline. She got her C.D player and she turned on the music. Filling the C.D player with Kathak music.
Once the music started playing, she stood there listening to it for only some moment, then knelt in the middle of the floor, and closed her eyes.
First her hands, then her arms, and then her whole body raised up. She flickered like the blazing flame of a candle, graceful and strong, around the dance floor, and she rose effortlessly upon her toes.
Beat and rhythm, turned her lips into a soft smile as her body moved gracefully with the music. Dancing was not only her passion it was obsession for her. As she put her leg on the dance floor, she forgot everything and her body never missed a beat.
As she was ultimately done with practicing her dance, she once again reached out to the music player and switched it off before seeing the final glance of herself in the mirror and pulling up her straight black hair into a horsetail.
Aditi strolled down the stairs and went to the kitchen to make some tea for her. As she was entering her kitchen, she heard her parents talking about something and they ceased when they heard her coming. Though she felt it really weird, she overlooked it thinking they were talking about something personal.
"Good morning Ma, morning Papaji," Aditi said cheerfully as she headed into the kitchen.
"Good morning sweetie", replied Mrs. Virk Aditi's mother, the aroma of cinnamon and cardamom in the bubbling water was filling Aditi's nostril.
"Are you making tea Ma? Can you make some for me? Please!" Aditi cried as she took the seat beside, Ditiya, her younger sister, who was already nearly done with her breakfast. She seemed to be in a bit of a lazy.
"Sure and what would you like for breakfast sweetie?" Mrs. Virk questioned with her brilliant smile.
"How is your dance practice going on?" Aditi's Father, Mr. Virk asked Aditi, as he folded his newspaper and took a sip of his morning tea.
"Toast and scrambled egg, Ma" Aditi said to her mother as she turned to her father and replied "practice are going awesome, Papaji."
"Good" Mr. Virk smiled
After a few minutes, her mother served her the breakfast. And then she took a seat next to Mr. Virk. She also began to eat them. They didn't talk for a while, but then Mr. Virk decided to break the silence.
"Your Ma and I have talked over something so we think I have something to tell you" Aditi's attention was grabbed by the speech of her father.
"Yes, Papaji. What you want to talk about?" Aditi quickly swallowed her food and nodded.
"You always express no interest in marriage. But dear, you are grown up now and we think it's the time to get married." Aditi's father pronounced.
She really didn't want to sit there and listen to that particular topic. She looked at him; her eyebrows raised and shook her head "Oh. No... Not again... Papaji"
"Why not, you are twenty three," Mr. Virk suggested.
"I grew up with the determination of making my dream a reality; to become a renowned dancer!" Aditi tried to explain her plan for her future. Then she took a brief pause and said, "Moreover, I don't think it is the correct age to get married, Papaji"
"People do get married at this age, it is not too young sweetie" Aditi's mother, Mrs. Virk said.
"I am not in favor of an arrange marriage. I prefer to find somebody someday, get to know that person for some time, and then get married." Aditi explained her view point.
"What do you mean by the right person? How will you know he is right for you before the wedding? Did you have already chosen my Jiju? Kya Didi" Ditiya said it with her devilish grin, suddenly all her all lethargy were gone
"No," Aditi huffed and narrowed her eyes at Ditiya for making it tougher for her.
"Then marry with someone, we choose for you" Mr. Virk gave a suggestion to his daughter again.
"B-but... but... Why? Why an arranged marriage? I still have time to finish university, start my career, and what about my dance?" Aditi was upset with her family and by this time her voice was quite high pitched.
"Career? Dance?" Mr. Virk interrupted Aditi. He stared at her until she dropped her eyes. Her heart sank
"Ma, Papaji, I love dancing and moreover, how can I live with a boy, whom I don't know? This is ridiculous, What if we are not compatible? What if the boy wants transfer from India? What if he doesn't like me dancing, there are so many 'what ifs'. I am not comfortable with the idea of giving in whole heartily to someone I don't know." She swallowed hard.
"Look at your friend Vedika; isn't she happy with Manav? Their marriage was arranged by their parents. And, He is such a gracious boy; also Vedika's parents are too happy with the match." Mr. Virk tried to explain Aditi by giving examples of her, happily married friends, but they were a different person, and Vedika had never ever dreamt to be anything but Aditi had her aspirations.
"Vedika was fortunate that she got Manav. Imagine a scenario in which I am not that fortunate? "Aditi questioned her parents,
"If a man and woman are serious and steady, they will work together to live happily and-- "Mrs. Virk stated and her husband nodded his head in agreement.
"And what if only one of the people is serious? Then the problems will arose which could lead to separation. This is so scary and why to take risk when it is not necessary--" before she could complete her speech, Aditi was interrupted by her father.
"The family are very good friends of ours, you know Malhotra uncle, right? He is his elder son and we firmly believe that the marriage will work."
"You're joking, right Papaji?" Aditi asked. She didn't see how her father could joke about something so ridiculous, but they all looked so serious. This is a very bad joke, she thought.
"Give it a chance," Mrs. Virk said. "We are your parents and we know you better than you know about yourself." Mr. Virk added.
"Are you serious? I doubt that. If so, you would have known it, how much it would upset me." Aditi mumbled in sadness. There was an awkward silence spread in the room, but the silence was also taking a break soon when Aditi shouted ""No Way! I am not getting married"
"You have to meet him, your father has already promised Mr. Malhotra." Mrs. Virk firmly ordered Aditi.
"But?"
"No, excuse meet him once and if don't like him, we won't force this marriage" Mr. Virk assured his daughter.
"Alright, fine, however, guarantee me no driving upon the choice" Aditi sighed, arguing with parents is like talking to a brick wall. It didn't matter how much time you tell them "no", they are going to find a way around it.
"Oh my god! Didi, the conclusion is you are conquered" Ditiya screamed in excitement and their parents breathed out in relief.
Aditi rolled her eye," Why are you so happy Ditiya? And then proceed by with her speech "And do not get your hopes up Ma, Papaji, the meeting will be on my terms."
"We will understand if you do not want to meet him in front us... uhmuhm... Didi". Ditiya teased with a smirk plastered on her face. Aditi frowned and huffed with anger at Ditiya.
Aditi didn't know what to expect and what not to, she is already very sad with her parents' decision of getting her married, for her it was nothing more than her parents trying to get rid of her. "If not this boy they would find other," Aditi thought.
"By the way, what does he do?" Aditi inquired, but with not much interest.
"He is a software engineer in Illinois and he is working for " Mrs. Virk Proudly answered
"Oh my! Ma, I am not going to marry or meet someone who is not staying in India. He must be an idiot as after completing his education from India, he went to serve another country" Aditi was shocked that her parents were trying her to get married with some nerd NRI
"No dear, He is a very nice man. His name is Arjun Malhotra. He is in America temporally due to an official project; he will be back in two years. If things go ahead to marriage, I think our daughter can adjust till then. Mr. Virk squeezed Aditi's upper arm as an assurance.
"God what I am getting myself to?" Aditi thought. One date and that was it, after that Aditi decided to tell her parents that was he was completed dude and hopefully they could move on from this little fiasco.
Aditi crossed her finger that it might be some sort of dream. But alas, it was not, she also thought that she would now have to forget about her dream to be famous dancer, and start getting prepared herself to be a homemaker.
