fourteen
"Try not to kill us, ok?" August signed jokingly as they walked out to the motorcycle.
"I'm not going to kill us." Maya rolled her eyes.
"You almost killed us last night," August pointed out, and Maya sent her a glare, picking up the other helmet and handing it to her.
In all fairness, the two of them had both been overly tired the night before and neither of them should have been driving at that hour.
August clung onto Maya as they drove through the streets, wishing like hell that she was the one driving.
Maya stopped, half hidden by the wall, peering at the group of people playing basketball in front of the fire department.
August didn't question her on why they had stopped. She understood that things we're complicated.
Not too long after, Maya started the motor again, driving the two of them off. August was a bit surprised when they stopped in front of a roller rink.
"Do we have a plan here or?" August arched an eyebrow at her.
"Just follow my lead," Maya instructed a determined look resting on her face.
August took in her surroundings as they entered the rink. It was very colorful and there was quite a lot going on. People of all ages skating or playing arcade games.
The music blasted over the speakers, and a couple of girls ran up to the counter picking up their skates.
August had only been roller skating once.
She was twelve at the time, there with her older brother to collect information. August only made it two laps before she had to sneak into a back room for a thumb drive.
August's attention returned to the situation at hand when Maya rang the bell on the front desk for the second time.
The man snatched his hand over the bell, successfully muting it, "I have a headache, okay? You ain't from here but you look familiar. How come?"
Maya rolled her eyes as he continued, "Well alright. Mystery is your thing, is it?"
"Oh my god. Don't be an asshole," August rolled her eyes, "We're here to see him."
The man glanced over his shoulder at the photo on the wall and then looked back at Maya who nodded.
"Well if you ain't here to skate, he ain't available." The man then continued to offer up several options relating to spending money in the rink. That was until Maya motioned for August to follow her.
Maya set her helmet down on the stool as they reached the top of the sound booth.
"Here we go!" Henry exclaimed into the mic, "Greenlight, go!"
"We've been playing this since the 90s." Maya pointed out when Henry looked her way, "You should switch it up."
"Are you nuts? Look at those glowing faces." Henry replied, with a bright smile of his own.
August looked out on the rink a small smile tugging at her lips. It was true, everyone looked very happy.
Henry picked the mic back up, "Red light stop!"
The lights flashed red and everyone on the rink fumbled to stop. A second later he set the mic back down.
"What's going on? Who's she?" Henry signed, his eyes moving to August.
"Let's talk somewhere private." Maya replied.
He nodded, picking up the mic once more to announce, "Green light, go!"
August and Maya followed Henry into a room which she presumed was his office of sorts.
"That guy you have working for you sucks." Maya stated, her eyes briefly scanning the room.
"Vickie?" Henry shrugged, "he's alright. A pain in my ass, but he's worked for me many years. Not only at the rink you know?"
Maya slowly sat down on the couch and August hovered awkwardly in the doorway.
"So they finally caught up to you, huh?" Henry quipped, "bullet or blade?"
"Bullet," Maya replied with a small wince.
Henry glanced at August, "What about her?"
"I can speak for myself." August signed as she spoke, "and I'm fine, Maya got the worst of it."
Henry held up his hands in surrender and when he looked at Maya she shrugged. Without another word he made a call and soon there was a woman there to help Maya.
"What are we working with here?" She asked and Henry signed the question to Maya.
"Hopefully not that thing." Maya replied, glancing at the instrument in the woman's hands.
August let out a quiet laugh, and the woman hummed, "Locking hemostat. It keeps the cannula from slipping out of your carotid during desanguination."
Henry held his hands up in a dramatic shrug as the woman continued to explain herself. So Maya's eyes flickered to August.
"Mortician stuff." August informed with a shrug.
"But uh, I don't think we're embalming you today."
"She's not embalming you today." Henry added with a joking smile.
Which of course lead to Maya slapping the woman's hand away.
"Gretchen's our resident mortician." He stated.
Maya's eyes widened slightly, "You're an undertaker?"
"If you want a body fixed, if you want a body gone. She's the person you call." Henry signed.
Maya glared at him, "You want me fixed or gone?"
Henry shook his head with a teasing look, "Let's start with fixed."
When Maya's eyes returned to Gretchen, the woman motioned to her and Maya let out a short sigh, lifting the fabric of her shirt to reveal the wound.
"Dental floss, nice." Gretchen noted, "Take a deep breath."
