First memory
The very first memory she could recall in detail was when she was a toddler. She couldn't remember the exact age she was at the time, or how she got to where she was, but Shiki could remember sitting within a dark room on a bed that seemed befit of a giant. Her body was trembling, tear's flowing down her cheeks from fear as her eye's stung. She had been instructed to stay within the cabin room below deck of a ship that was rocking violently while lightning lit the sky and thunder rolled in after. Shouts could be heard from above as many sets of feet stomped around. The crew of said ship were frantic as they rushed, all shouting in panic when the storm first began and only continued to grow worse. It was completely unexpected; the day had been beautiful seemingly seconds ago and now the wind was howling and water smashing against the boat as if the sea herself was infuriated.
Another crack of lightning and booming thunder sounded, quickly followed by a bellowing deep voice barking out orders to the frantic sailors. The rain was falling hazardously outside, obscuring the view of every occupant upon the ship. Shiki curled into herself more, hidden from the world and the monstrous storm underneath a blanket. Her hands shook as they covered her ears in an attempt to block out the noise while a shaky hum rumbled in her throat in an attempt to help, to distract her mind from both the flashing booms and the nightmarish dream's that have been plaguing her for some time now. Shiki didn't sleep very well ever since they started, a dream of a different world. There was a girl in her dream, who she knew was herself, and in every single dream the girl; or rather herself, died in a storm and awoke to another realm.
You see; Shiki hadn't always been, well, Shiki. In fact, she was someone else entirely who died and was 'reborn' into a world called One Piece. With the death of her original life and rebirth into this one, her brain went under a traumatic experience trying to sort out the 'then' memories and the 'now' memories. This made her body attack itself at times giving her painful headaches and becoming sick. Her mind had trouble with all the information from her past life and for the most part she couldn't remember much of it at her age. Most of the time, memories of her past life would hit her as she slept but the worse memory that stuck to her was how her previous self-died.
Memories came up of a horrendous storm, voices were screaming as the earth moved beneath her feet. Panic rose, fear overwhelming as blood stained her vision. Pain ravaged her body when rock slammed against her as lightning lit the sky and thunder rumbled through the air. Then? Then she was submerged in water and no matter how hard she fought she could not resurface or control where her body went. No matter the struggle, no matter how hard she kicked her feet she could not find her way to the top and could not fight the powerful current of water. There were bodies in the water with her, all struggling as well to get out of the water and take a much-needed breath. She couldn't breath and her lungs began to burn. She desperately urged herself to hold her breath.
Don't breathe in the water....
Don't breathe...
Can't...
Breath...
Can't breathe...
I can't breathe!
"Shiki!" Her door slammed open, and she flinched into her covers with a loud choking gasp, trying to stifle her crying as the familiar voice of her grandfather bellowed out. "Shiki?!" He came almost as if he could sense her panic and struggle.
Something she always noticed, he always seemed to come when she needed him.
She heard his enormous footsteps coming closer to the bed and the next thing she knew, the cover's were ripped off of her leaving her bare to his intense gaze. Scared, wide brown eye's stared into the old knowing eyes of her beloved grandfather who was, as it seemed to a toddler, a giant. Adorning his body was a white suit with the logo on the back "Marine." Her dear grandfather was none other than Monkey D Garp, a gruff war hero with an intense stare and presence. Yet... as the gruff old man took in her teary fear filled eye's, his own look softened into a gentle gaze that few; if not any, had ever seen upon his face.
"Hey now, what's with the tear's ya brat?!" He demanded, his voice felt abnormally loud and caused her to flinch. "There's nothin' ta fear."
"Mm sorry." She mumbled, flinching at another loud boom of thunder. "KYAA!!" and then returned to curling into herself with a muffled cry. The dreadful flashing and noise just reminded her of that horrible dream. No... memory. But she couldn't tell anyone that, they'd think she was crazy.
"..." Garp stared at his granddaughter for a moment, taking in her trembling form before moving his large arms from his chest, previously having been folded, and wrapping them around the terrified child. "No need to be afraid." His voice was now low and whispering. "Grandpa won't let anythin' hurt ya, got it brat?"
"Ok..." She sniffled.
"... I got you Shiki." The assurance tore at her crumbling attempt to keep a straight face.
Her eye's watered more. "O-okay Grandpa..."
Just then, as the storm began to quiet, a loud snore tore across the room and echoed all around causing the two to pause in their embrace and turn to look over to another child slumbering deeply on the other side of the giant bed. Shiki had to scowl to herself for a moment because of COURSE her brother could easily sleep through the stupid storm. Not much fazed her fraternal twin brother so why would a storm? That and he always slept so deeply it honestly made her jealous.
Now that the storm was calming down, the ship continued on its course, charting its way through the East blue and making its way towards an island that their grandfather planned on keeping them. After all it wasn't safe for children to sail aboard his ship, not with all the danger's that lurked in the water's where he normally sailed and hunted. So, he decided to keep his grandchildren in the least likely place to find too much danger yet grow stronger at the same time. After all he planned on them becoming strong young marines!
For the life of her, Shiki couldn't recall why the island name seemed so familiar...
