Chapter 41
"And she lived happily ever after...", I whispered with teary eyes and watched some of the white blossoms fall from the tree, we were sitting beneath.
"How can you say 'happy' grandma?", Charly sobbed while she covered her face in my apron and left dark spots from her mascara.
"Listen... I will tell you something I have never mentioned before..."
Eddy watched me with his big eyes and hugged his sisters cutely so they would stop crying.
"I want you to remember this ok?", I stumbled quietly.
My three grandchildren nodded attentively and I handed them a tissue over, which they embraced thankfully.
"Dry your tears first, okay?"
I would finally tell them something that would make them smile again.
"Why am I called Eddy and not my father grandma?"
"When I gave birth to the child... I starred into the same innocent eyes, I always saw in Bo. So I had to give him the same name. He agreed on christen his first son, you, Eddy."
"Wow. I feel honored to own this name."
"You are so much like him. Just like your father."
Eddy smiled at me and stood up to reach some blossoms and pick them from the slim branches. Slowly he tiptoed over to me and sticked them between my white hairstrands.
"Beautiful."
I chuckled at his cute compliment and pulled him against my chest.
"You never seemed sad grandma.", Sarah stated surprised when she saw me laughing.
"My darling. That was the thing I wanted to tell you. Listen carefully."
The three of them took place again and awaited my narration.
"The woman, I, was so desperate about my own future, so I almost gave up on my own life. But I had learned from Xiumin, from Jongdae and Baekhyun, from Bo that I was supposed to fight. And that not only for others but also for myself.
I gave birth to your father, Eddy, and it was the first time I had smiled again. It felt like I had Bo back in my life and I finally got my will to live back.
There was nothing I loved more than my only son. I never found a man like Xiumin again. Still, I lived my life happily, I watched my child grow up, I started my career as artist and have the most amazing grandchildren ever.
My past was horrible. The wave had destroyed everything I had. But it couldn't destroy what I am.
And that's what I want to tell you. It doesn't matter what your past is, or what hurts you. Things might make you feel sad, but what is important is that you never forget who you truly are. You are a miracle. No one in this world is like you. And that's good.
Everyone of you is amazing in my eyes. Your life should not depend on others. Neither should your happiness. Be kind and brave in heart. That's the key in life."
My shivering fingers pointed towards Eddys chest and he happily grinned at me.
"I will."
"I know."
Sarah wiped away a single tear from her cheek and nodded her head.
"What was written in the letter grandma?"
"Should I read it out loud?"
"Yes."
"Dear Jia, dear Xiumin... I hope you have a great wedding and that you enjoy your future together. If you wonder why my handwriting is so good suddenly, it is because I traced it from Mom's writing. Thankyou for always playing games with me and spending time with me, I hope we can do that more often. The two of you should always be close and love each other, that's all I wanted to say. May you always look at each other in the same way, Jia looks at the sunset. I love you, Bo."
My voice was shaking while reading it out loud and it felt like I heard Bo's clear voice.
Then I took out something, Bo had put in the envelope 50 years ago and handed it over to Eddy who gladly took it.
"This was in the envelope."
"Whoa is this a real shell? I've never seen that!"
Weakly I smiled at my youngest grandchild and nodded. It was from the beach in front of our hotel.
The beach where everything started to fall apart.
I had spent the most beautiful but also the most horrible moments there.
Sometimes luck and sorrow come together, and those are the hardest times of all. The higher you fly, the longer the falling.
But the good and the bad belong together like life and death. They complete each other even though they are so contrary.
Eddy still kept the shell in his hands and refused to give it to his sisters.
"It's grandmas shell. You would destroy it."
Amused I patted his head slightly and took the shell back into the brown envelope. Suddenly my fingers brushed against the surface of another tiny paper sicking in there. I hadn't noticed that before.
Before I unfolded the small note I could see two words that made me choke up again.
From Jongdae
"Read it out loud grandma!"
"I wish I could stay with you, and I'll do everything to stay by your side, but I gave this to Baekhyun just in case I won't be able to flee from the police. I'll visit Bali every year from now on, to visit the grave of your husband. I know it is hard for you to do so too, but still I beg you to come with me ince you read it. I'll be waiting. Much love to the strongest woman I know."
After some minutes of silence Charly blinked at me and stood up with a worried expression on her face.
"I think we should go in, as it is getting really cold outsides."
With the white tissue in my hands I wiped over the wet cheeks and then got up from the grass.
"I'll go to bed..."
"But granny you just stood up? And we have to remake the mumble cake, otherwise the party will be a fail..."
Eddy was right. Valiantly I stretched my back and took him by his hand.
When we went back to the small house, the sun was setting behind it and let the blossoms of the old tree shine in various colours.
And for the first time in 50 years the sunset didn't make sad. I smiled.
