Chapter 28

It was quiet in the house when I woke up. Usually the kids would wake me up, but today they were still sleeping peacefully next door. It has been a long night yesterday, until they had finally followed my command to go to bed.

Dejectedly I shook my head and stared at the ceiling. Those kids never gave up. They came right after their grandfather.

My alarm started ringing aggressively and I reached out my hand for my clock at the nightstand. When I wanted to hit it, I missed it and my hand bashed against the yellowed envelope. Not caring about the jarring sound anymore, I took the letter into both of my hands. My fingertips brushed over its surface, where his name was written. I had read it last night, and all the words came up my mind.

The tears in my eyes veiled the neat handwriting and I couldn't stop a tear from dropping onto the paper, where the black ink started to trickle away.

I had to do it.

For him.

He wants them to know it, and so do I.

They deserve to know the truth, it's partly also their truth.

Slowly I stood up, put on my shoes, opened the door, and slided my feet through the gravel. When I arrived at the peartree, that was covered in a white sea of blossoms, I catched one of the falling flowers and put it into my hair, that had turned white after all this years.

I still remember the day, when Xiumin had suddenly appeared under my window with a huge picnic rug and a basket in his arms. When I had arrived in the garden, I had found him standing under this tree, it had been little back then.

With opened arms I had run over to him, and we had landed directly on the blanket, the blossoms falling down from above, and had kissed each other for a long time.

And now I was standing on the very same place, alone, with the shining ring in my hand. I walked around the tree to search for the ornamental inscription, that should be somewhere on this trunk.

"What does that mean grandma?"

I hadn't noticed, that the kids were standing right behind me and Eddy inspected the writing on the tree attentive.

"That's the scar, that Xiumin left in me, when he disappeared."

Backhugging me, Eddy tried to comfort me. I turned around and kneeled down in front of him.

"Do you still want to know how the story is going on?"

Proudly he pointed at Charly and Sarah, who were holding a picnic blanket in their arms. I smiled.
