Chapter 1

POV: Falconkit (2 Moons Old)

I was a couple moons old when I learned that I was different. The medicine cat, Vineleaf, was returning me to my mother, Acornfur, after a whole lot of poking and prodding my leg. I didn't understand why everyone was getting tails in a kink for. Sure, my leg hurt often, and it almost never actually worked, but I was just a kit. I'd grow up stronger, wouldn't I? Acornfur looked concerned, which made sense, since I was her only kit, Sparrowkit and Robinkit had both died due to hunger, which wasn't uncommon in leaf-bare, but still devastating. I inched closer, listening in on their conversation. Vineleaf was whispering something about never becoming a warrior and not being worth the effort. This terrified me. The only thing I wanted was to become a proud warrior of ShadowClan, and now I couldn't do that? What was the purpose of life if I couldn't fight for my clan?

When Acornfur and Vineleaf were finished whispering, Vineleaf trotted out briskly and Acornfur leaned down to look into my wide, unblinking, yellow eyes. "Falconkit," she said softly. "You have a defect leg."

I tilted my head to the side, confused. "Huh?" I mewed. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"One of your hind legs doesn't work. You'll never be a warrior." Acornfur explained, looking disappointedly away from her kit.

"Oh, that explains a lot— wait!" I squeaked. "But... I'll become an apprentice at least, right? Smokestar will give me a chance, right?" I panicked when Acornfur didn't reply. My voice quieted, and I was even more terrified than before. "Right?" Acornfur just shook her head grimly and padded out of the nursery. I collapsed to the ground and cried.

Until I felt a soft pelt settle beside mine. I jumped to my paws, but almost collapsed when my 'defect' leg refused to support my weight, and turned my head to see a fluffy white kitten staring at me. "Snowkit?" I asked. Snowkit and Rainkit were the two other kits in the nursery. They were littermates, and a moon older than me, so I had assumed that they wanted nothing to do with me.

"Hello!" Snowkit exclaimed happily. "You looked sad, so I came to comfort you." She said in the universally adorable kit way of explaining things. Snowkit stood up beside me, purring.

"Um... thanks!" I replied enthusiastically as she led me over to the nest where Rainkit and their mother, Lilybloom were resting. Rainkit was a dark brown spotted she-cat and Lilybloom was a light ginger she-cat with dark speckles. I wonder why neither Snowkit nor Rainkit look like Lilybloom. I noted, but my attention was diverted and I purred softly when Snowkit didn't comment on my limping. Snowkit laid back down beside Rainkit on their nest and motioned to me to join them. I hesitated, but eventually padded over and laid down comfortably beside Snowkit, my defect leg folding against my warm stomach, and the rest of my body curled around it, protecting my largest weakness. Snowkit was ecstatic when I finally laid down, but Rainkit... not so much. She gave a low hiss when I laid down and she immediately stood up and padded over to a different nest, glaring at me the entire way.

Snowkit ignored Rainkit and went right to asking questions. "Why were you unhappy?" She asked, staring at me with wide-eyed fascination.

"I won't be able to be a warrior." I grumbled. "Smokestar won't even give me a chance and let me be an apprentice."

Snowkit thought for a second. "Hm. Well, you're only a couple moons old, right?" She asked, a mischievous look flashing across her eyes.

"Right." I replied hesitantly. Snowkit was making me a little worried.

"Good." Snowkit meowed. "Well, that gives us plenty of time." Snowkit jumped up from her nest and ran outside the nursery.

"What are we doing?" I stood up, being careful not to put weight on my defect leg, but refused to leave the warmth of the nursery.

"Training." Snowkit pointed with her nose to a beetle crawling on the ground. "You want to prove to Smokestar you can be an apprentice? You'll have to get trained. And who better to train you than me? I can be your friend and mentor!"

            "Not happening."

Yay! That's a more successful chapter. 700 words isn't bad, hope you enjoyed!
